Mega Man Battle Network | The Completionist

I've played all the classic Mega Man games, but have yet to try the portables until now. Jack in to my Mega Man Battle Network Review! Subscribe: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThatOneVideoGamer About The Game: In the near future, the Net is connected to virtually everything--from computers to office water coolers. An evil group is bent on dominating the world by corrupting the Net with viruses. You play as Lan, a young hacker, who must stop this threat with the help of his virus-busting program (and best friend) Mega Man.exe. Lan can walk up to just about any object and either use it or get some interesting (and often funny) information about it. In fact, this kind of exploration is necessary, because there are Net jacks in the strangest places--even a doghouse. And while Mega Man.exe is deployed fighting viruses on the Net, you often have to go out and collect clues in the real world. This teamwork adds some refreshing complexity to the game. Battle Network 2 and 3 are the best in the series but every entry offers something awesome. Definitely my favorite Megaman series and favorites GBA games of all time.

I was playing a zelda game yesterday, oracle of seasons. I encountered a platforming section with DISAPPEARING BLOCKS and I remembered: "Oh that's right capcom helped make this"

I never knew the "classic" Megaman series growing up. It wasn't until I was like 8 or 9 years old that I saw the classic Megaman, and knowing the sleeker, more modern Megaman.EXE and X, I almost felt insulted that they were calling this little character "Megaman". Megaman Battle Network was pretty much all I knew, and to this day, I've never been able to get into the classic series or X. But it's fun seeing the opinions of people who did grow up with the Blue Bomber.
Hunter Webster (5 days ago)
I can see how people who grew up on the original Mega Man games can get thrown off. But as someone who was introduced to this first, I loved the story, the rpg elements and the world. I read the manga, played the games and even bought the tcg. Some of us love this MM just as much as the original.

MMBN3 is where it really shines and I believe its where it reaches its peak. (My only complaint that I vividly remember was that the shuriken chip was incredibly OP and broke the game. I actually might play through it again and ignore that chip all together.) I love this channel but just by observations it seems that the Completionist just ran through this without putting a lot of work into it, which surprises me since this is a retro game and not a new series that needs a review RUSHED through like game journalists nowadays.

Life Aura is for beating up your friends in multiplayer.
raziel1178 (10 days ago)
I remember there were some really cheezy chip combinations to take that make the random enemies a joke across the board. Had real fun trying out all the different chips. edit: some you can even get around the 1st boss if you grind a little iirc

New to this series but dam this is the first video I saw of this that pissed me off. Its like he was just trying to rush through it and didn't take the time to actually LEARN the game...

I beat this game when I was 7...not gloating, but my point is this isn't a tough game.
Midnight Xmare (27 days ago)
i loved that game so much . killed so much time getting lost =)
Acie Willis (28 days ago)
The first Battle Network was a little unbalanced and kind of acted as a test sample (in my opinion) for them to build on for the future versions. I loved all of them aside from the first, and 5th ( team protoman/colonel) versions.

Now if you want a horrible megaman battle network game to 100% try megaman battle network 4
RoboSpark725 (1 month ago)
Man, trust me. BN3's postgame is bonkers. It's post game is practically a expansion for free. I don't want to spoil it too much but it all ends with a battle against a super boss (Even more powerful than Bass). It also has some great new mechanics like Styles and the letter code of a chip showing on the Custom screen without having to hover over it with the cursor. Overall it's one of the best Battle Network games out there.
Benny Wireman (1 month ago)
I agree with the same every time you move on the internet , its those. Random battles , its just annoying, I agree it is titidous

So you have no experience with the Battle Network 5 game in the background of the introduction? lol
Andy (1 month ago)
So basically, the first BN game is like the first Mega Man Zero: a solid and ambitious, if a little rough around the edges title that was ultimately a segway into much greater things through its sequels.
marxxplaysgames (1 month ago)
Now, play the Starforce games
Zapper Man (1 month ago)
I can defiantly see some of your points Jarard but the other games in the series (particularly BNE 3) do a MUCH better job at improving upon the job. I really hope that you give BNE 3 a try even if it's just for a causal play-through. The post game is amazing and I found it very rewarding. A warning to you though, it is VERY difficult!
The TM Network (1 month ago)
Hope to see you play the rest of the series

The point of life aura is multiplayer as with many other of the chips. Multiplayer was a huge intention of the game designers.

T Fenix (2 months ago)
1) Chips are not gotten by random. its base on how well you complete the battle. this is seen by the busting level at the end with rank S as the highest. 2) Program advances are not very strong?! 2XHero says hi... 3) this game is hard? thats because you are not playing the game to its fullest. I can S rank bosses by 1 shoting them using 2Xhero and other powerful program advances. i had no issues with any of the bosses and i was only 13 when i played it. All in all, making a review when you only have so little hours invested in a game isn't fair. Just because you got everything, doesn't mean you truly understand the game.
Alice Star (1 month ago)
Well remember he usually plays classic Megaman and Megaman X, and he's trying unsuccessfully to compare those two games (which are one style of game) to Battle Network (an entirely different style of game). He's using his prior knowledge to play this game, but his prior knowledge is based off an entirely different playstyle.
T Fenix (1 month ago)
+Alice Star agree which tis game is not about! which brings back to the point that his review totally missed the mark for this game...
Alice Star (1 month ago)
He's too used to using his buster. Chips are stronger, but he if you can see from his playthrough he focuses mostly on buster.
Nsporter0711 (2 months ago)
3 is the start of this series
Tyler Riley (2 months ago)
17:10 "This truly is random" *gets a busting level of 2* I realize you went into this game relatively blind but in your review you state things that are outright wrong all throughout. I know we've been fans along time and ofcourse we know the mechanics of the games but it seems you didn't even try to figure it out. Misinformation is a plague and you should do your best to avoid spreading the plague. I hope you try battle network 2. If you do, save yourself some agony. Jack into everything, collect HP memory. You need it I think. Change your folder and drop weak chips like cannon as you get useful chips throughout. Choose 1 or 2 chip codes and stick to only them and asterisks for your folder. You'll hit your opponent with atleast 3 chips. Then by the time you do that, you can recycle your 'hand.' Chips are certainly not random drops and are based around your busting levels. Which goes up with fast deletion, multi deletion, and goes down with using your buster (which you used as your primary weapon) and getting hit. Later series add new customization and styles. Later on you can use other navis (bosses) souls after you beat them, which combines with lackluster chips to create devastating effects. I must tip my hat to you for your dedicated patience. I can't imagine playing through the end game bosses with beginner level chips and the buster. Must've been agony.

If you want more post completion content you should really check out Battle Network 3. I think there's more post-story content than story content.

Oh man, this brings me back. This game was my first Mega-man game, I didn't even know it was a spin-off at the time. Because the anime was how I got interested in this. I fell in love with the world and the take on the Mega-man himself being a computer program. I played through literally every game in this series, and trust me, most of the games take place in the same settings, with only a handful of new characters with each consecutive title. And that made it feel like a real grindfest. What made it worth coming back to was the fact that new mechanics kept getting layered on top of each other with each new title. Eventually the dev's realized this was a bad way to keep making this series, and in one game they basically changed everything about the formula and made Lan and his family move, and I know it's minor, but that reinvigorated my interest in this series, because five games in with the same overworld, I was getting fatigued. The chip system takes some time to master, which is why you had a hard time with the game for your first run. And you were spot on about the Pokemon style music, I loved that about it. All in all, it has alot of charm that makes me feel like a kid again. I hope you give a later game in the series another go someday. Maybe for a future sequel month? TL;DR: I love this series.

Honestly EXE was my favorite Megaman series, the originals always frustrated me as a kid and X was pretty good but didn't appeal to me as hard as EXE did. Legends was great though, wish 3 wasn't cancelled :(. Anyways you should check out the successor to EXE starforce another one I really enjoyed. I hope they being this formula back again on the switch but sadly MM is never coming back.

Super late comment to remind you to not forget about this series. I share to the "T" a lot of your game opinions. the first battle network was to BN 2&3 what the original zelda was to link to the past. 2 and 3 were just right. the rng is still there but the gameplay and progression is just so much more well paced imo. I admit is hard to recommend anyone complete everything in either of those games because its so grindy but they were the shining stars of the series. things didnt hold up as well after the third installment but give 2 and 3 a chance. Those titles are were you will find what fans of this series always get so excited about.

I'm pretty sure life aura is for multiplayer
Katrina Payne (2 months ago)
With all his complaints he is making... I'm just being reminding myself that Capcom is also the company that makes the Monster Hunter games. Also... the better entries in the series are typically listed as the Third Game and the Sixth Game. The Fifth Game is fun--but a major shift from how the game works. There are also certain types who recommend the Fourth Game... those people are broken, do not trust them and be VERY suspicious for them. Also... how did not you not make use of the "Put X Amount of Chips Into Machine to get Random Chip" mechanic? Was that not introduced until the later games?
Bodie B (2 months ago)
I love your reviews man....but when you say "make the cringe stop" when referring to bad jokes in the mega man cartoon. It makes me laugh because of how cringe your jokes always are....including the one almost immediately before said comment. But as i said you are great at what you do. The bad jokes make it almost better in a way.

That analogy took me right to Star Wars.
Cheex (2 months ago)
the battle is hard and complex? just another japan is saying to get good. and no experience after battle is obvious, they're data, not actual characters, they need upgrades, just like real computers, its not like playing fornite or league on my comp is gonna make it better... right?
Masterge77 (2 months ago)
The Mega Man Battle Network games are all great (except for 4), though I do think you were a bit too hard on the first game. Of course, the first Battle Network game has many problems and suffers from "Early installment weirdness", so if you found certain parts of it unenjoyable, don't be surprised since the series was still a work in progress at the time. Fortunately, Battle Network 2 and 3 fix a lot of the problems that the first game had.
Kevin D. E (2 months ago)
It gets super solid once the forms are introduced and fine tuned. BN4 Sun is my favourite and then 5,3,2,1
Ace Trainer Smith (3 months ago)
The rest of the series is great, and the Starforce series for the DS is just as good, if not better in my opinion. similar mechanics as battle network, except the battle system has a back camera and you can only move three squares and attack forward. but it makes for good strategizing
jmcnish (3 months ago)
Eugene was called Claude back in my time
T (3 months ago)
I'm sure that the others have already brought this up, but a lot of the points you mentioned were addressed in its sequels. If you have the time, I highly suggest Megaman EXE 3 since it's the pinnacle of the series in my opinion.

better series than trash ass megaman games imagine being so bad at a game as a grown man meant for kids

Why did you keep saying 2003? The game released in 2001...

Megaman? (Snickers, hides laugh) More like Mega-John Lecarde.....man. XD Nailed it! Get it? No? Then how about Mega-Eric Lecarde.....man. It's funny because those two Lecarde guys are the palpable characters in Castlevania Bloodlines....a game that Jirard needs to complete
