Ok here are 2 or 3 questions I have Always pondered, being that kama covers bjj history, I will add it on here. Was Relson even possibly bjj national champion for 22 years? And if so ...how? Relson was born in 53. Lets say he starts competing at 10, or 15. That would be the 1960s before ibjjf long before jjgf at just at the end of carlson reign and the start of Rolls. Doesnt seem right.then by the 70s Rolls Rickson and Carlihnos were the main fighters. I know Relsons good but wheres the record of any competition? Helio had a record from the 1930s...another random question is....why doesnt rorian ever roll? His sons are super legit, and Rorian played head instructor with Rolls back in the 60s. He must be atleast OK..obviously more a teacher than fighter
Shawn Dominique (1 month ago)
+Kama Jiu-Jitsu well GM Rorion is definitely one of the best teachers in BJJ and has been doing it what? The late 60s? So I have no doubts about that. I think he is as legit as he needed to be to prove gjj effectiveness..but wouldnt call him exceptional (again my opinion only)...just ahead of the curve which theres nothing wrong with. You cant really compare him to the mma guys of his family, but that was never his goal anyway..without him alot of us wouldnt even be training for sure. Thats interesting what you say about relson and I totally believe it...I just wish there was more documentation on bjj prior to the 80s where you can see who really did what..for instance Carley also was apparently undefeated but seems to be the only 1 that talks about himself...his son Clark on the other hand as a monster grappler. Carlson Sr also only lost 1 fight ever but you can only get to see 1 of his valdemar fights. Would love to see mkre of the earlier stuff even with Helio or George.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (2 months ago)
GM Rorion was legit as a fighter and is one of the best ever as a teacher. if he wasn't legit as a fighter, how do you think the SoCal Gracie Challenge matches would've gone (and therefore the success of the early Gracie Academy)? as far as GM Relson, in any age/weight class he was in, he was undefeated. you may not believe his accomplishments, but they wouldn't call him "Campeo" (Champion) and people would dispute calling him that. i've seen him called that, and i've seen no one say the nickname is not appropriate. as he told it to me, he and GM Rickson would be entered (as adults) in both the same weight class and the absolute, but on opposite sides of the bracket. they would meet in the finals, but never go up against each other. Relson would take the weight, Rickson the absolute (because he was the better of the two). as far as Rolls, he fought in a lighter weight class than them, but no doubt, he would kill them at the academy rolls.
SV Flighty Drifter (2 months ago)
Rorion followed Helio's instruction, and believed that teaching was the ultimate expression of leadership. Every west coast old school jits black belt remembers Rorion in his garage on foldable mats spreading the gospel of GJJ. Rorion passed that down to his kids so now you see Ryron and Renee spreading the word around the world. It's amazing to see the explosion of BJJ just in the 30 years I have been following and rolling. And to see amazing teachers and practitioners like the Valente's, Pedro Sauer, Eddie Bravo, and the whole Gracie clan both Carlos and Helio's sides. I've travelled to 34 countries and have been able to find a solid school in almost every country. That word spread in large part due to Rorion and his approach to marketing and teaching, but he is still legit on the mat too, you just have to attend the Torrence academy to see it.

Everyone wants to get in on a Rickson dick suck but what most of these folks just don't really understand is that Rickson started his serious training in Jiu Jitsu at 6 years old. Not only did he start with just any decent instructor but with a progenitor of the art itself..Helio Gracie. There are certain things he knows and a certain level of sensitivity that I believe is really not that possible to get unless one trains from early childhood. A superior sensitivity that is not even conscious anymore, it's now an instinct that actually moves and feels by itself. Small children who now study seriously from the age of about 4 years old to 8 years of age I believe can develop this. Rickson's brain as it developed through childhood to his teens and then to manhood, developed under this. Why are Brazilian soccer players so world famous...when I was in Brasil, living there and training there, I saw kids who could barely walk, with a swingin' load in their diapers kicking and beginning to dribble a soccer ball. Is there any surprise that they're so good. Sorry but no one is really going to able to get to his level without really training from that of a child age and non stop continue through manhood. Kids who are training now and will never stop and go straight to adulthood can and will achieve such ability..those who have not..will not...Sorry. I'm sure there will be those who will disagree.. Just look at guys like Kron and others...they are at a different level...it is what it is..
nagone11 (6 months ago)
Kama...I never said they could not either..all I said was to get to a level like a Rickson...early childhood study is what makes such a practitioner. There are many excellent Jiu Jitsu men out here, no question, but when one speaks of Rickson, who is special when it comes to Jiu Jitsu, this is what I believe. I didn't say everyone was going to agree.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (6 months ago)
No one said he is. I was merely pointing out how someone can be extraordinary even if their intensive training doesn’t start in earnest until middle school. Marcio Feitosa is another. Began at age 13, if I’m not mistaken. Same with Marcio Stambowski. Rickson is just a statistical outlier, is all. Everything came together with him.
nagone11 (6 months ago)
Kron is great..but he still isn't Rickson!...lol
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (6 months ago)
Kron talked about how he didn’t train much as a kid (favoring instead, his skateboard) and didn’t really start in earnest until he was a young teenager after his brother Rockson passed. And yet, he’s Kron “Freaking” Gracie...

Rickson he is the real deal period he deserve to be RED BELT he has proven to all how the effectiveness of BJJ in tradition way or sports and actual in the ring even outside the ring we know they are a lots of GRACIE’S family at Carlos SR.side and Helio side but if you will pick one only out of the Gracie’s family theirs only that is ELITE and unique which is the only one Best of the Best RICKSON GRACIE the son of HELIO GRACIE it’s just like theirs only one MICHAEL JORDAN you can’t compare them , sorry guys it’s my opinion.

Theres a third dan black belt near me from Brazil who got his BB under Roberto Godoi and he went to one of Ricksons clubs and watched him. Apparently he lined up a dozen hard ass BB and went through them all one by one. He then did it again this time telling them in advance how he would submit them, and he did. Ricksons problem was he spent too much time fighting pro wrestlers in Japan.

Rickson, master of invisible jiu-jitsu. I learn so much rolling with black-belts, because I can feel how they use and maneuver their weight, so I can't imagine what a gold mine rolling with Rickson would be.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (11 months ago)
You should try it.
Brian Myers (11 months ago)
My question is how the hell did he get so good? Helio was small and far from undefeated. Was it because of Rolls and his open mind. I find it hard to believe it's because he is Helio's son......and man, that is no diss on Helio whatsoever.
Jim S (6 months ago)
All of that plus it appears that he was more physically imposing than the average Gracie (I say “average” respectfully, of course). It seems that he and Rolls shared that attribute. When you are physically superior (I don’t necessarily mean large), then you have more freedom to explore and take risks...you can go for the kill more than someone who is less athletic and has to color w/i the lines so to speak. That plus perfect technique and you have a guy who is the closest thing to a real life ninja IMHO.
Brian Myers (10 months ago)
Both good points. If being a bit of a recluse is a sign of high intellect, I must be a friggin genius! Or, I'm just getting old and young people get my nerves.
YawarakaiRonin (10 months ago)
Man is a genius. He took something complex and simplified it. He is able to solve problems faster than others can, and often in novel ways others could not see. My guess is superior spatial intelligence. He is a bit of a recluse. That's another sign of high intelligence.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (11 months ago)
Like with modern engineering. Today’s engineers are far more advanced than engineers from decades ago. But today’s didn’t get to where they are without building on the knowledge of their predecessors. But a particularly brilliant engineer will take the knowledge of the day much further than even his most notable contemporaries.
Brian Myers (11 months ago)
MMA dudes hate on Rickson, but I have yet to hear one legit black belt say anything bad him. Even the Gracies still say he's the best by far, and they hate each other! Thanks for those stories man.

I see. Thanks for the extra information. Back then the internet wasn't what it is today and information on MMA like that was much harder to find. I have been a huge MMA fan since just before UFC #5 and I had not heard some of that information before.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (1 year ago)
+Craig Babbitt it was commonly known/discussed in the Rickson "community." I wouldn't say that Rickson "did not want" to fight Saku. I think it was probably more that he "did not care" about fighting Saku. But it was important to Rockson, which is why it was slated to happen.
Craig Babbitt (1 year ago)
Never heard about the signed contract. I honestly think Rickson would have beat Saku, but the impression I always had from what I saw and heard was Rickson did not want that fight.

Marv Banner (1 year ago)
Robert Livingston watch choke. Rickson is truly a grand master. I've done a decent amount of research and I've yet to find a confirmed loss in BJJ or MMA.
Scott Finnestad (1 year ago)
Robert Livingston what a stupid statement.
Truth Guy (1 year ago)
No doubt Rickson has the best BJJ on the planet. I think the only 2 guys that come close are Roger and Marcelo. I think if all three are in their primes, Roger could win by points or tap. Marcelo only by points. But it would be a case where they all split wins and losses. That said, I think many of the stories from top level guys are embellished, because they have so much respect. I mean, come on. Who would really try to submit a 56 year old Rickson? He's a legend and I doubt anyone would overpower him, even if they could. It's the same as when Michael Jordan played against Dr. J. Jordan openly admits, he was so in awe, he couldn't do anything. Even so, Rickson is the epitome of BJJ and a true martial artist. I'm glad he is regarded as a legend.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (1 year ago)
Marcelo of today would have no chance against Rickson at the same age. shoot, he wouldn't have a chance against a 45 yr old Rickson. i'm not sure Marcelo would beat his master (Fabio Gurgel) at the same age. Or absolute world champ (and teammate) Roberto Traven, whom Rickson is known to have "played with."
Paraic McDonagh (1 year ago)
Stories are great. Lots of videos on YouTube of people telling great BJJ stories. BJJ is part of a great Brazilian story telling tradition. I love the anecdotes about the Gracie's superpowers. They're my favourite ones.

vibrantZebra1 (1 year ago)
One thing I'll note though about his pressure, just for the sake objectivity, is that when Rickson fought Takada for the second time, the (albeit larger) Japanese pro-wrestler was able to shove Rickson out of mount with what looked to be just his strength advantage. Perhaps this was due to some heat of the moment thing? Rickson was based up pretty high at that time and wasn't keeping the pressure.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu (1 year ago)
not sure what part you're referring to. do you have a time on a particular video you can reference?
vibrantZebra1 (1 year ago)

I asked Prof Dave about the varying levels of black belts a couple years ago, and how there seems to be such a great disparity in the levels and abilities of the black belts. he said you have the "masses" in the group of black belts, that covers maybe 90-95% of the black belts. then you have the "elite" black belts, which would encompass the top level competitors/fighters/typical Gracie Family members. ...and then you have Rickson. haha!
Jack Taufer (1 year ago)
I remember as a purple belt I was working in San Diego for about 6 months and I got to train with Saulo and Xande Riberio. I watched those two DESTROY visiting black belts. It was amazing to watch. That being said, if you ask Saulo about his rolls with Rickson he will tell you that Rickson submitted him! (Actually Saulo mentions this in his book.) That is what is so incredible to me, the level of black belt is so wide. Its like the difference between white and black... There are black betls and then there is Rickson. It is not the level of physicality, its the refinement of technique.
Francesco G. (1 year ago)
That just amazes me. because I know bjj is technique, but when technique is equal , physical prowesness is the deciding factor. Could Ricksons technique be that much better than a current compititor that does nothing but train, when Ricksons injuries have made it so he really cant that much? i dont doubt it, but it is just amazing, thats all im saying. Its like a once in a lifetime, geniuous jiujitus mind and I guess rickson is it.

So is Rickson still rolling even in this days? Last time I heard he had a pretty bad back and wasn't actively sparring anymore but you guys probably know better.

Spirit Splice I'm sure Rickson too, for how good he may have been, had really hard rolls or moments in which he was dead tired and still went through hard training. It's still stuff that taxes your body I guess, no matter how good you are. Let's also not forget that he had a strong build and supposedly was in top notch physical form, but he wasn't let's say dominantly big like Roger, who truly is difficult to impossible to even seriously pressure in day by day training.. if the story about Mark Schultz helding Rickson in the cradle for a long time was true, it's not hard to believe some other freak of nature guy or somebody with a really good balance could have put a lot of pressure on him without necessarily "beating" him. However, Rickson is mid fifties by now, if anything just age wise it's pretty normal for him to not have random rolls with the guy just coming in the gym. I wouldn't bet my money on any modern era very high level jiu jitsu guy to still be able to roll that good by that age to be honest. These are all my suppositions/opinions on what I've read in the years anyway, I don't really want to enter in a debate about Rickson myth or true strength as I don't/can't claim any ultimate truth, surely there is people that knows better than me like Kama Jiu Jitsu and the other guys of this channel that probably will answer with first hand statements. Peace and have a good training!

Madmac79 He is very selective with who he rolls with and how often he rolls. He does still roll but on a very limited basis.

+Martial Lashley, as far as I've known, he's "trained" with everyone who had asked, when he was in a training setting. Guys from Brazil (and others) would come into the studio to "learn from the master" (more like themselves against the master). He would train with all of them, no matter how big, strong, skilled, etc. He would always come out the victor, but oftentimes, it would come at s big physical price. GM Rickson is not a large guy by any standard.

Paul Daluz He over did it. It made him a genius but his body suffered.

sadly we didnt see him fightin vs wanderlei, fedor, sakuraba, couture, vovchanchyn or coleman. fightin vs those guys now he would be the goat, but that didnt happend.

He knows who to dodge but talks crap about everyone. Rickson beating Fedor in his prime? Dream on Rickson, same with him beating minatauro in a fight.

People thought that Rickson would possibly lose to Funaki...he did take a shot to the eye but next thing I saw, was Funaki's eyes rollin' in a brain oxygen deprived state....Rickson was about 40 years old......

+Onslo Parker, yeah, saw that clip on Helio on Rickson. I saw the list of names on his record. That list, while technically true, I was like, uhhhh...
Onslo Parker (1 year ago)
Can't believe something we've never seen lol haters more like reasonable skeptics... even Helio himself denounced Rickson as someone who is liberal with hyperbole. The worship for him is silly for what is supposed to be the most legit practical martial art

Why don't you say who the guy was?
T smith (7 months ago)
To be honest I would think it would be the opposite. There is no shame in that. It just shows not only how good Rickson is but the need to learn the basics. If Rickson beats you then find out why and learn from it!!!

Kudos to you for taking the moral high road. It's something we can all learn from the gentle art, along with patience (LOTS of it!)

that's not what we're about. we know who it is. he knows who he is. it's not important for everyone to know who it is since the story is about Rickson, and not the latest "victim." some of us who have been the "victim" to Rickson's jiu-jitsu are happy laughing about the story. many have visited him with a chip on their shoulder thinking "he's all hype" only to find out he's the real deal. if they spent their entire career disparaging him (like you see in the comments of many of our videos or on the chatboards) to everyone who will listen only to get destroyed by a chronically injured and broken Rickson in his mid-late 50s, if that person's ego is huge, they wouldn't want everyone knowing it went down that way. we respect that.
Richard Yu (1 year ago)
Actually that sounds like a solid guess.

Richard Yu I know who it was. I was there that day
