Rainmeter - How to make custom Honeycomb icons for any program (Windows)

1065 ratings | 118293 views
*Note* This video is intended for people who already have Rainmeter installed. This video does not show how to install Rainmeter or get the Honeycombs skin. I am using Windows 10, but 7 and 8 should also work. The video does go by quite quickly, so pausing may be necessary at each step. Link for the Honeycomb skin: http://tablesaltz.deviantart.com/art/Honeycomb-GGL-v2-Nov-4-2015-557828631 Link for paint.net: http://www.getpaint.net/download.html Comment below if you have any problems and I will try to help. How do you get no picture to show when you hover over
Lars de Graaf (24 days ago)
Hi quick question, how do you get so beautifull and minimalized GGL shots?
Mark FM (23 days ago)
+Lars de Graaf I show it at around 2:45 in the video. If this background folder doesn't show up, you need to download the honeycomb version in the description.
Lars de Graaf (23 days ago)
+Mark FM Like when you hover over an icon and in the middle of screen something appears
Mark FM (23 days ago)
What do you meanby GGL shot?
kevin montecillo (1 month ago)

If you wanna do this but simply don't wanna use honey comb do the following (Btw the bit at the start of this does not make sense because I put this comment on a different video but wanted to spread the word on how you do it.). Anyways, here is the juice, ladies and gentlemen: Hello, everyone! If this did not work for you (Didn't for me.) or you just find the whole thing a bit hard, then don't worry this way is a lot easier. Just figured it out myself. Here is what I suggest begginers or people who for some reason couldn't do this wether they didn't understand it or it just "Didn't work"! Do the following: Go onto Rainmeter, Click on the add skin button that is next to the "active Skins" dropdown select box. Once it has bought up that screen some of you may be able to do the rest by yourself but incase some of you cannot then do the following: Select the "New Folder" Button and type in a name for your plugin. Then select "@Resources" and then select the first folder you created in the folder branch and then select "Add Skin" and type a name. I just did LoadMe. Now right-click on the "@resources" folder and select "Open Folder" from the Context Menu. This should open the "@Recources" folder. Drag and drop a picture into that folder and rename the picture "btn" (This picture will be the button's Icon!) You can then close that and go back to the Rainmeter "Create a skin menu" You were on earlier. This time you need to RightClick the Skin File you created and select "Edit". if you have used Rainmeter before and know how to use the software then you can do the code. Otherwise, stay with me and I will give you the code. The code can be found at ghostbin using the link below: https://ghostbin.com/paste/xz8ua Right! Next step: Now paste that code into the text file you're in the text editor of and edit the following things: Edit the AppPath=E:\Sims\The Sims 4\Game\Bin\TS4.exe to AppPath=(The filepath of the app you want to launch, this can be found online or in the video if you do not know how to find filepaths. Don't worry it is simple.) Next edit the ImgPath=@Resources\btn.png to ImgPath=@Resources\btn.(The file extension of this image. If you do not know how to find the extension you can find that in this video if you watch it.) Next save the text file. You can do this by pressing "Ctrl+S" at the sime time on your keyboard or (in notepad) You can go to file at the top corner of the app, then save. Now exit out of the text editor and go back to the create a skin page on Rainmeter. Just select, "Close" in the bottom left corner and then go back on to the normal rainmeter and select "Refresh All" at the bottom of the skins list. It should be there. Now drop-down the folder that has the name of your skin. Go to the .ini file (The one I called "LoadMe") and select Load Screen. Now look at your desktop. Good job! You just did it. Now you know (If you didn't already) the basics of creating skins and you know how to create buttons that launch an application. Please like this comment if you got to the end of this comment (I know it's very long, I need a cup of tea now *Wipes sweat of forehead* and if the comment helped you. Dislike if otherwise and don't forget to leave your replies. (Geez I hope it wasn't just me who it wouldn't work for. Then I'dve typed this WHOLE comment for nothing.) Anyways. Hope this helped. Sub to my channel. Reply to this comment. Like or dislike based on your experience with using these steps instead. Have a fun day, people who actually read to this bit. I <3 u!

Lili Bateni (4 months ago)
idk if you found it or not, but i downloaded an unofficial addition pack for honeycomb icons. the link is here :) https://www.deviantart.com/rafii2198/art/Unofficial-Honeycomb-Additional-Pack-1-9-688797985 it has discord plus a bunch more. hope this helps!
Black Halo (6 months ago)
where did you get the halo icon?
V Kook (6 months ago)
the background folder is gone on honeycomb its only the ini file
Mark FM (6 months ago)
You must have downloaded the wrong honeycomb version. Use the link in the description.
Nicolas Marek (6 months ago)
Btw, how do I move the background image? It's stuck in a corner
Mark FM (6 months ago)
In Rainmeter, deselect the tick box "click through", "snap to edges" and "keep on screen".
Nicolas Marek (6 months ago)
How did you manage to get the Witcher one? Or any other. Did you made it on your own?
Drastic Gray (7 months ago)

Stef Camps (9 months ago)
Very good video, it helped me out a lot! Could you give me the rgb code of your honeycomb icon? Anyways keep up the good work!!
Stef Camps (9 months ago)
Wow super fast reaction :) and that's what i'm trying right now XD
Mark FM (9 months ago)
+Stef Camps Man my original honeycombs are long gone. Maybe you could screenshot the video and get the colour that way?
Nate Stuart (9 months ago)
Also: Instead of making your own icons, many people have made their own icons for honeycomb that the creator has yet to put into the program. I was doing my own discord icon, and I found someone on DeviantArt who made their own version. When I followed this tutorial and used their icon, it worked perfectly!

Ken Macawili (1 year ago)
There'n no background folder in mine please help
Boxxlavision (6 months ago)
Probably irelevant now since your comment is 7 months old but you need honeycomb GGL and not the standard one.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Ken Macawili You downloaded the wrong version of Honeycomb. Try the one in he description.
Bryant Paul (1 year ago)
For steam games, you're not supposed to use the application path. You need to find the steam path which looks something like steam://rungameid/444090
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Bryant Paul As long as you are logged into Steam and your password is saved launching the game directly from the .exe still works. If there are issues then for sure make sure to try this ^^
Lao Rivera (1 year ago)
hay man thanks for the tutorial im trying to figure out how to change the position of the background image, i changed the valúe OnRefreshAction=!ZPos "-2" but doesnt work
Lao Rivera (1 year ago)
oh thanks a lot m8
Lao Rivera (1 year ago)
the position is determined for the image on the paint.net background
Aline (1 year ago)
So in the newer version of the .ini's there is no background folder anymore. Is this a problem? Does this folder matter; or can I just continue without it and just changing the thinks I can?
Aline (1 year ago)
I tried it with my current (newest) version and it works perfectly fine without the background file =)
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Aline Yeah the folder does matter. I believe you installed a version that does not support the wallpapers. Try the one in the description.

M01 (1 year ago)
Hey mate, when i open up the folder or .ini file i only get: [CHROME] Meter=Image ImageName=#@#Images\chrome.png H=90 LeftMouseUpAction=["chrome.exe"] [Rainmeter] Update=1000 [Metadata] Name=chrome Author=APIUM Information= License= Version=
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+M01 You have to change the name of the photo and the file path. The only part that does not matter is the [CHROME]. Follow the video closely to see exactly what I changed.
M01 (1 year ago)
Or do i just change the filepath? Its the only thing that matters, right?
M01 (1 year ago)
how do you get around that problem?

I tried to make a Comodo Dragon Honeycomb Icon, but it didn't launch. I had used refresh all and such, comparing my one to a one but there's no difference in each other, and 'Refresh All' didn't work, I used a Honeycomb Icon I had made and copy pasted it into the @Resources folder, anyway to how to fix this?
twentony (1 year ago)
Hmm, I'll try that.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Noob with Chocolate Juice Is your program location correct? You can try making a shortcut for the program and linking the shortcut location instead.

Gerard Rustady (1 year ago)
hey dude i was thinking about why we dont make a new folder in skins instead of renaming everything
Gerard Rustady (1 year ago)
+Mark FM well i just tried making new one and i did it man. anyway teach me about the MouseOverAction format like the one you made
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Gerard Rustady Because if you copy another folder it has everything you need already set up for you except for the names. I think it is a bit easier but making one from scratch would work perfectly fine.
Yung Tomato (1 year ago)
How do you change the image? I just put in images\chrome.png, and it became invisible, and I couldn't click it.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+memer mccreamer Oh! Alright, glad you got it working.
Yung Tomato (1 year ago)
It turns out my images weren't in the Rainmeter\Images folder, so that was the problem. Thanks for responding though!
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+memer mccreamer You need to rename the picture you want to exactly "chrome.png" or go into the ini file and change all of the chrome.png to the name of your new picture. You have to delete the original chrome.png too. Make sure to hit refresh all in rainmeter after.
SunkMr Banana (1 year ago)

+TKMaida Nice!
TKMaida (1 year ago)

Mark FM (1 year ago)
+TKMaida Hi there! It is a common mistake. Try using the Honeycomb version in the description. You must have got the version that does not support it.
BlazingPhoenix (1 year ago)
THANK YOU FOR THIS.

When i try to do this i dont have the same lines when i open the .ini file and i dont know why

How do i resize the honeycombs?
AESRYL NZ (1 year ago)

Mark FM (1 year ago)
+AssassinGaming If you open up the .ini file you will find a line that gives the height and wide of it. Try experimenting with different dimensions.

Mark FM (1 year ago)

+Senne Van Wellen Awesome.
Senne Van Wellen (1 year ago)
fixed it the file was just simpeler and the code was shorter
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Senne Van Wellen What do you see in the folder? The file may be there but the extention (.ini) may just not be showing.
Nacho Garcia (1 year ago)
Instead of going into properties and copying the location, just shift click the .exe and click "Copy as path file"
Mark (1 year ago)
i cannot see the background folder? Can you please help me?
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Mark Johansen Thank you!
Mark (1 year ago)
Oh, and I forgot to tell you that you earned a sub and some likes on your videos. :)
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Mark Johansen No problem.
Mark (1 year ago)
Mark FM Thanks, never seen a so fast response :)
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Mark Johansen You have a very common issue. You have downloaded a version of Honeycomb that does not have the wallpaper effect. Try the one in the description.
Craig Mckendrick (1 year ago)
I followed all the instructions but as I got to the end it presented me with an error saying the skin couldn't be found, also my original chrome file that I am using as a copy at the start does not have a background folder if that makes any difference.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Craig Mckendrick You must have downloaded the wrong version of Honeycomb. Try the one on the description. Also make sure you click "refresh all" in rainmeter before trying to load the icon.

Mark FM (1 year ago)

Alexandre Gosselet (1 year ago)
where i can find this clock?
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Alexandre Gosselet It is a skin called "Minimal Rainmeter Suite". Google should get you the download site.
Brian Parmenter (1 year ago)
Wow, great video! Is there any way to do this with the UWP apps from the microsoft store? They don't have an .exe file path to substitute in the .ini file.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
For example: I added the Xbox app to my desktop and so in Rainmeter the new location is C:\Desktop\Xbox.lnk (it is a .LNK file).
Mark FM (1 year ago)
Hey there! Give this a go: Search for the program using the Windows search bar. Right click it and click "add to start menu". Open the start menu and drag the app onto the desktop (or anywhere you would like). Now continue the tutorial but pretend this is the application.
Bluejay (1 year ago)

I have another problem... So I mad myself a Black Ops 3 "comb" and when I load the blackops3.ini nothing comes up. the background works though. I´m still working on it but if you have a solution I whould very much appreciate that
thierry_675 (1 year ago)
Yes it is. I guess I'll try another one and see if it has the same problem
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+FPS_SAVANT Is it a .png?
thierry_675 (1 year ago)
Mark FM I can load the background through the rainmeter programm ( you can do that to change the position ) but when I click load to load the shortcut it doesn't show up... The whole custom folder looks just like all the other ones. I made it through a copy of chrome ( like you did in the video ) and at first the desktop logo showed the chrome logo and the custom pop up background. But as soon I changed the desktop logo to my custom one it didn't showed up anymore.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+FPS_SAVANT How does the wallpaper show up without the icon? The wallpaper is supposed to show up when you hover over the icon.
jordy van de ven (1 year ago)
this tutorial is shit
Mark FM (1 year ago)
jordy van de ven Is there anything in particular that you need help with?
InfectedByEli (1 year ago)
Just decided to add some honeycombs to my Rainmeter. Thanks for this video. I especially like the idea of the large images displayed on the mouseover.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+FPS_SAVANT No problem!
thierry_675 (1 year ago)
So I made another picture ( png ) and it works now. I had the old picture not loaded I guess. Anyways, thank you so much for the video and the fast reply. Very kind of you ;)
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+FPS_SAVANT Did you hit refresh all? Are your pictures .png? Did you download the honeycomb version that supports this? (link in description for the right version). Let me know if any of these fix it.
thierry_675 (1 year ago)
How did you do that? I followed all the steps and the big desktop popup doesnt show up

Simon Langlois (1 year ago)
I'm having an issue with the background hovering thing. Before creating the images, I renamed every copie background to my selected name for the file to check if the hovering worked. Then, I created the images. I renamed them correctly, put it in the correct folder and deleted the old background. For some reason though, whenever I hover over the icn, it still displays the old deleted background, and not the new one I renamed. How can i fix it?
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Simon Langlois Awesome. Good job for figuring out a solution!
Simon Langlois (1 year ago)
Mark FM Refersh all wasn't working. But, I copy pasted the all the files from each custom skin (or icon) into both Honeycomb and Honeycomb + GGL, and then refreshed all. I have no idea why that was working, but it fixed my problem. Love your work btw, and thank you for responding!
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Simon Langlois Try clicking "Refresh all" in Rainmeter. Should work.
Brian Luo (1 year ago)
Instead of going through the directory hassle, you can shift right click which will bring up "Copy as path" which will automatically copy the directory of the program including the quotes.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Brian Luo Cool. Thanks for the tip.
HGames 32 (1 year ago)
icons work, but when I change the background, its doesn't display it when I hover on it, i just wanted to change the steam background as i didn't like it
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+HGames 32 Alright. Sorry we could not get it working.
HGames 32 (1 year ago)
+Mark FM yes, I used paint.net and it saved it as png automatically, anyway, its fine, I decided I don't want a background as I would have to make a background for everything and I'm too lazy to do that, thanks for the help and tutorial was very helpful
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+HGames 32 Did you save it as the same file type too?
HGames 32 (1 year ago)
+Mark FM thanks for quick reply, I just edited the existing one and I did try refresh all
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+HGames 32 Did you delete the steam wallpaper and place your wallpaper with the same name in the same folder? Try clicking "refresh all" in Rainmeter too.

RedTiger8 (1 year ago)
How do you do it so it shows the game on your dekstop when you hover over the icon
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+RedTiger8 It is explained in the tutorial. Basically Rainmeter makes an image appear when you hover over the icon. If you tried and it did not work you may have got the wrong version of honeycomb. Try the one in the description.

Bryan Naing (1 year ago)
Um, what do I do, copy and pasting the file location doesn't work. Edit: I found out the problem. I was trying to make a custom Discord, and found that my version of Discord (unsure if it's the same for others) has not got the " " quote marks on it for some reason and I was self-adding the " " quote marks. The [ ] signs require it to be specific, so to fix it, I just removed the " " marks, and it works. Leaving this up just in case anyone has the same problem.
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Bryan Naing Cool thanks for leaving your solution.

+Guilty King Haha. No problem. You should be able to learn paint.net in no time. I have a tutorial on making icons with it if you wish to check it out: https://youtu.be/XmUKYTFQqHU. Good luck!

+Mark FM Thanks M8! I figure it out. Now I just need to learn how to use Paint.net lol

+Guilty King In the Honeycomb folder there is a @Resources folder. Open it and find the icon you wish to change. Edit it with any software you want and it should be good to go. Do not forget to refresh all in Rainmeter.

Julian Rothuber (1 year ago)
Worked ! Thank you
Mark FM (1 year ago)
+Julian Rothuber Ok listen closely. There is a tick box that says something like "draggable" in Rainmeter. Click that. Now, you must load the background.ini so that the wallpaper shows up permanently not only when you hover over the icon. Drag it to the monitor you wish and then unload the wallpaper.ini and uncheck the box. Comment if you need any more help!

Mark FM (1 year ago)
+vladimir putin Alright if you go in to the rainmeter folder you can find the honeycomb wallpapers. Open the image in paint.net or any photo software, resize it and then save it and you should be good to go.
