The Tragedy of PUBG

53250 ratings | 1558062 views
PUBG is probably the biggest sleeper hit in video game history. It revived a genre that was pretty much dead, and set numerous records along the way. With such wild success from an early-access Indie game, we all had high hopes that Bluehole would do amazing things. But none of us could've predicted how wrong we were.... I thought not. It’s not a story that Bluehole would tell you. It’s an Indie legend. Darth PUBG was an early-access game of the Battle Royale genre, so powerful and so popular he could use his gameplay to influence the consumers to spend money… He had such a knowledge of making money that he could even inspire others to make Battle Royale games. Making shitloads of money in the game industry is a pathway to many business practices some consider to be greedy. PUBG became so respected… the only thing he was afraid of was losing that respect, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught Epic Games everything he knew, then his apprentice made a better game than him. Ironic. He could properly optimize other Battle Royale games, but not himself.

(also I got nothing against PUBG, lemme make that abundantly clear, alright? My points in this video are solely on the developers.)

And then PUBG ACTUALLY files a lawsuit against EPIC and makes themselves look like even bigger tossers. PUBG is as Jim Sterling put it "The biggest succesful failure in video games". It made a shit ton of money, that 720 Mill was from Early Access steam I believe so with X One sales and loot box keys Id bet its come damn close to 1 BILLION in earnings. But will go down in history as THE example of how you dont handle the development and growth of your game.

Great video! I'm just so frustrated how shit Brendan Greene and his company turned out to be. They don't care about their game or their customers, they just want money. It's a huge shame, that game had the potential to become so much more but it'll probably be abused as money milking machine until there's nothing left.

You have a point charging the consumer a full fledged $30 for a half finished game. Atleast fornite br is free and the microtransaction is your choice to buy and its not random ass cosmetics , you pay for what skins, pickaxe, back bling, and gliders. And it runs better then pubg. The actual fornite is 30 bucks and it lets you earn v bucks by doing daily and weekly challenges. As much as i wanna play PUBG its just DayZ without the zombies.

Honestly love the game hate the developers and i think the direction of the game is improving overall, mainly because they see the major backlash in numbers of sales, players, and popularity. In general pubg is a game made from indie devs who wanted to hit big with a great but very early access game meant to be improved upon. But once sales stated rapidly increasing and popularity grew, they just had to cash in on it as much as possible, which was the case about 2 to 3 months ago, but besides the lawsuit in south korea with fortnite, is slowly improving in many ways. The devs are lazy and greedy because of the explosion of revenue in their game they were very hungry for more and they realized that it fucked them over and was very blatant to the people so they started doing cool things with the game and continue to give it more fixes, updates, and makeovers. Liked the video because you rightfully bashed the devs because they are fucking greedy and only cares when they saw the backlash from not caring and working on their game.

And how Fortnite is free? It's not, the idiots who pay for those skins and season passes are the ones actually paying for everyone else to play. And they are able to slowly push in the micro-transactions because EPIC has a ton of investors who are investing millions upon millions of dollars in Fortnite, while it grows, because they know eventually they will have a user base so big that it will be a money printing machine.
sdfsdfs13 (4 days ago)
Your lack of understanding of the complexity of running these games is laughable. You don't understand the cost of servers. You think they just got all those millions and filled their pockets with it. The servers to run real time multiplayer games are very expensive, all their servers cost millions a month to run, that is why they need micro-transactions, there is no "free" multiplayer game, multiplayer games need to in the model of "games as services" to be sustainable in the long run, there is no other viable way to keep these games going for a long amount of time, the servers are too expensive.

What the hell is the problem with paid loot box cosmetics? Don't buy them if you don't want them. Who cares if someone nutjob wants to blow $500 just to look pretty? *It's not your money that's being wasted, and heaven forbid the devs want to earn extra cash.* Is ActMan so competitive he not only has to dominate in gunplay, but also look prettier than everyone else in the game? ActMan points out the devs lied about how early they are putting paid lootboxes, I counter with how in the first few minutes ActMan claimed he totally understands how devs need to make money and those who are worthy should reach for the stars. Then he contradicts himself and whines about paid cosmetics in the 2nd half of the vid. And his forced meme is just silly. First of all, who defines what a genre even is, and who decides that genres can or cannot be a protected intellectual property in the special realm of video games? There are no universal rules set in stone, all these specific rules came to be because someone with power lobbied for it. And have you seen IP lawsuits on what can and cannot be claimed to be an infringement? Shape of a logo is fine, but not the shape of a product? What? See, same things in different media can be judged differently. Then ActMan whines about things that don't even fall under Intellectual Property, like Hitler's Conquest. And in that case, people WERE concerned it might be WW1 all over again. Actually generals of Foch even predicted the end of WW1 to be just "an armistice for 20 years," and he was only off by 3 months. The most I can say for PUBG is that the devs were plain stupid to blurt that out at a press conference. *Those dumb shits.* SMH And who the hell cares about Jim Sterling, most of the time he's a self-obsessed PC-touting maniac who makes a big deal out of everything he could nitpick, just like ppl like GradeAUnderA. What's the problem with gambling? He says using gambling-driven earnings to fund a contest is bad... but never explains why. Is money earned through gambling any better/worse than money earned through sales? Virtue signal all you want, as long as the lottery is legal (a real life loot box system that is centuries old) you can't make the argument that the act of gambling _itself_ is bad. It's not like the loot chances are a secret either. And they had money to fund charity? So what? You cannot possibly be telling me you are so naive to believe businesses donate to charity from the good of their heart? If that was the case they would be doing that in secret! *It's for PR and tax cuts. Isn't this common knowledge by now?* So yeah, they spent corporate funds on a PR event, and now they need money for another PR event (contests). What's the problem? Or maybe the PR events were planned way earlier, and the extra money from the loot boxes are for something else? How are you so sure it's anything?
