Hey Philip. I know this is an old video, but how did you get your maps to compile with CMD instead of Hammer's standard compiler? The standard compiler lags my computer, so is there any way to do it on CMD?

1:44 A similar thing happens with modding Minecraft (odd you mentioned the game), in the virtual game environment using MCP (Mod Coder Pack) everything with ambient lighting turns very black, even the actual light source!

No more flickering or toggleable lights? That was my favorite thing to implement in maps back in CSS and Half-Life 2 :(

There's a new bug. Apparently, vrad_dll.dll broke. They fixed it in CS:GO, but not in TF2. Do you know if the CS:GO vrad dll is compatible with TF2's?

I find it funny that we STILL don't have real-time ray-tracing on PC, but a 10 year old PS3 used it in a lot of high-end games.

The most accurate way to render is path tracing, as ray tracing doesn't perform global ilummination, instead some tricks like photon maps do this.

Actually, Pathtracing is the most accurate lighting method available. However, it is so resource heavy that it is not possible in real-time. But, that may soon change. I am personally working on a real-time pathtracing solution for Unreal Engine 4. I may be able to also bring it to Source 2. If I am allowed to access the source code that is. Also, Global Illumination is actually a Raytracing technique. GI is effectively a way to set an "importance volume" around the scene to tell the engine exactly what needs to have GI and what doesn't. Out of bounds areas are outside of the volume because they are areas that the player will not see. Thus, they do not need GI. Ambient Occlusion can be performed with several different methods. The most common being SSAO or "Screen Space Ambient Occlusion". Some games use a variant of SSAO, like HBAO or HDAO ("Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion" and "High Definition Ambient Occlusion" respectively). The best type of AO currently available is VAO or "Volumetric Ambient Occlusion" which is an AO method that actually calculates occlusion based off of the GI of the scene, instead of approximating it using only the depth buffer like traditional SSAO.

Even with static prop lighting I still get black props. I use 1 env_sun downwards and it lights up everything, even inside buildings which is weird however props are still black. Any help is massively appreciated :)

guys, pls help me. i have a problem with lighting. This command: -StaticPropLighting doesn't work. I press run map, but i have a red message with problem in console(cmd menu): LoadPortals: couldn't read C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\counter-strike global offensive\sdk_content\maps\(and name map with .PRT) WHAT IS? I try to compile it with fast and -staticproplighting but the compile log just explains different shit and doesnt even compile. Without the -staticproplighting it compiles fine but the props are still black. Any help?

Make sure you don't have any leaks in your level. Those are places where your outside map can see the blackness outside, which must never happen. See videos about leaks and you'll eventually learn how to deal with them

to fix the black mess on the grass disable shadows on the grass, then it will have normal shadows, dont ask me why deactivating shadows fix them

You can disable the real time shadows e.g if you only compile vbsp, so you have no lighting. just kill the cascadelight entity with the ent_fire command and no more black shadows.

When ever I try and use expert compile settings when I try to compile the map it works well but when I put it on the workshop it will crash when I try and play the map from cs go itself. does anyone know how to fix these? If so please tell me.

Valve said that this engine would be constantly updating as new technology gets introduced. Yet they can't even have pixel lights inside that cast shadows. I've heard it was possible by some coding but not sure if it would work properly.

Make sure you save the map into cs go's map folder and not anywhere else
I get those lighting bugs on matchmaking sometimes and reloading map does not help.

3kliksPhilip. I have been having problems whenever i test out my map. For instance when ever i load op the map i cant choose CT side for some reason. Also no bots spawn on ct side and i have a spawn set for them and everything. When i choose T side only one other bot joins the team and we're basically just playing against no enemies. If you could help me in any way that would be great (insertthumbsuphere) THANK YOU!
