When the kingdom hearts song started playing, I felt physical pain, for real! I played that game so much as a teenager when I had no responsibilities!
John Harmer (1 month ago)
I am a simple man. I see kingdom hearts, I click
David Winget (1 month ago)
Watching/listening to this while grinding levels in final fantasy tactics.

Its one thing to write a story, its another to display it
Raxelleon (2 months ago)
What about how the bad guys usually come from a country that is simply known as "the Empire?"
Max Holland (2 months ago)
What about the main villain being mysterious? That's a common plot point in JRPGs.
poncho828 (2 months ago)
The genre as a whole is cliche.
Charlie Webster (2 months ago)
Character, most likely the main character with amnesia was an oversight not to mention...
ThiefRikku0306 (2 months ago)
What do you have against "real Emotion" Watchmojo? Do you not understand the depths of the song? Do you not understand how it's Yuna's feelings for Tidus? How she's thankful that he came into her life. How she's thankful that he shook her world view up? How it was him and his Dad that provided the needs to end the spiral of death? Without Tidus she would have played the part of continuing the spiral of death in Spira. Her would would not be shook, her world would not be free if it wasn't for Tidus being brought to Spira.

The fact that the Final Fantasy VII is listed as TBA...
Ness in Pajamas (2 months ago)
Let's see how many of those cliches Earthbound adopts 10: The only thing that comes close is Porky's machine at the end 9: Boney is not a mascot, so this is safe 8: Onett only gets doomed near the end, and even then it turns out perfectly fine 7: Other than lack of how Ness got those magical powers to begin with, the plot is simple 6: Paula prays for the group's safety at the end......This is probably the biggest cliche this game borrows, even if it's cool. 5. I don't see any spikes on Ness' hat, even when he's in his pajamas 4. Technically these do exist, but you can also avoid them with patience. 3. While this holds true, all of Giygas' form feel similar, at least to me. 2. With Jeff's Rockets and the rest's magic attacks, grinding isn't nessesary. However Poo's sword is obtained via rare drop so there's that. Honourable mentions: So many ugly NPCs, Earthbound can't avoid the magical artifacts trope, and does that intro look anything like J-pop? 1. Ness caries a bat.........A FREAKING BAT! how much of a cliche dodge is that? So there are bits and pieces of those JRPG cliches sprinked into Earthbound, but for the most part it's a very refreshing take on the genre, and it's my personal favourite JRPG, if my profile pic and name didn't give it away.

I fucking hate Morgana... he's not even cute.
Melanie Rose (2 months ago)
you might as well as re-title this video: Everything Wrong with Square Enix. Cause now you're just attacking kingdom hearts ;;
Tyler Smith (2 months ago)
Not one time do you even show a clip from Final Fantasy X...come on WatchMojo.
kyrstyn hartman (2 months ago)
Lol literally when they announced number 3 I instantly went oh god Persona 3 and seconds after I said it a clip from persona 3 appears!
Mohan Grewal (2 months ago)
Kingdom Hearts is at the top of JRPG cliches. That game is praised for its story when its just a combinations of cliches put together...
Nate Nodelle (2 months ago)
You forgot the wahmen
Tyrell Nicklaus V Caesar (2 months ago)
Ayyy lmao so true. I would like to add some more: - Monsters carrying items often a lot -Conveniently placed treasure chests everywhere - Dead parents or just at their hometown - Allies that have specific jobs like being the brute, healer, mage, etc -
Mark Biermann (2 months ago)
If the game is done right, I like the concept of grinding. As in: if you are pretty awesome at figuring everything out, you can get through without much of this busy work. But if you're a bit of a ditz and don't really wanna figure out some elusive super tactic: just grind a few levels. That way it feels like a more natural sort of difficulty adjustment. Ofcourse, it then also hooks into the anime trope of 'the genius who is skilled by nature vs the clumsy student who works harder'
RennoC 5021 (2 months ago)
The last boss either has multiple forms or a "celestial" evil being shows up out of nowhere with no build up serving as the true last boss
Allen (2 months ago)
I miss the “Random Encounters” in JRPG. A lot of them don’t have them. I’m talking about Random Encounters that come out of nowhere, not the ones where you see the enemy.
Allen (2 months ago)
“Power of Friendship” should be number 1.
Dai Nobu (2 months ago)
In defense of Xenoblade Chronicles, since the beggining is stablished that they live in/on the body of a dormant giant god and it's source of enery is the god's blood, Colony 9 was only attacked not destroyed, Riki is less annoying in japanese, none of it's protagonists have spiky hair and finally the Monado can switch sizes depending of it's user.
Brendan J (2 months ago)
I don't know why I thought the video was JRPG glitches. Wait....I just gave another Video for WatchMemejo to make since you know, they are out of ideas.
THE GAMERS LOUNGE (2 months ago)
I died at the cheesy jpop intro XD
Arc Caravan (2 months ago)
Talks of cliché games and surprised at the minimal amount of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Nay Flones (2 months ago)
I loved seeing Tales of Xillia footage! That was a great game.
Phantom Fox (2 months ago)
Boss battles were you need to lose to advance the story yet you could defeat the boss if it was a normal encounter . Or a previous boss appearing as a generic enemy later in the game .

ThePraydOne (2 months ago)
Starting of with basic trained kids who ended up killing gods and above.
Better Dead Than Red (2 months ago)
Grinding: Doesn't include footage of FFX and trying to max sphere grids, includes extremely low drop rates and doesn't show KH1 trying to get Defender.
Hessed3712 (2 months ago)
I read the title as Top 10 JRPG Glitches for some reason.
Epic Eric (2 months ago)
another cliche should be the youth saving the world. that always seems to be the case
Stkrdknmibalz (2 months ago)
Dark Souls & Bloodborne beg to disagree. XD
Another cliché: Extremely describing the taste of food
Michael Flater (2 months ago)
You missed the part where "You're the chosen one/only one what can help"
TheShadowHunter (2 months ago)
I would be inclined to agree with this list but I feel that FF XV removed some of those cliches and ended up worst off for it...
Akiin Moonlight (2 months ago)
Final Fantasy Invented Jrpg^^ <3 (fight me, its just a fact & FF6 is the Jrpg god )
Toi O'Kelly (2 months ago)
Amnesia is another cliche, and the childhood friends.☺
Freddy Martinez (2 months ago)
I was surprised to see trails of cold steel in watchmojo,it does help the series uses every trope known to man,but unlike most jrpgs trails handle them very well and subvert them. Also SPOILERS BELOW!!!! Example like rean's inner power is used for evil instead of being a power boost and it's later that he wasn't born with it because it's confirmed, that osborne did something to save rean from dying after a raid attack by the jaegers during the heimdallr raid sent by rufus albarea.
John Tumahab (2 months ago)
Following the trend of anime, everyone in a JRPG is in the prime of their life between the ages of 15-18. Anyone younger than that is a child and anyone older than that is Methuselah. Just look at Nooj in FFX-2. The dude is only 22 and he looks like he's 40.
Will Nyx (2 months ago)
Mom's calling! Better get up and go meet my childhood friend and put my nose where it doesn't belong!
The810kid (2 months ago)
How is Random encounters a cliche that's like saying platformers are cliche because you have to make jumps
LobsterPuncher (2 months ago)
Normally the animal mascots grate on my nerves, but Morgana is great. The first time he got inflicted with rage and screamed "Arrgh, now I'm PISSED!" That cracked me up.
Michelle Sudarsono (2 months ago)
From all of the watchmojo videos I've watched, this vid's narration is the best for me! I can hear that sweet sweet sarcasm hinted in the voice whenever you're explaining that nonsensical tropes that is the JRPG. A little constructive criticism: you seem to use the same series a lot, it kinda felt like you were only doing research on those ...5 JRPG which is a pretty small research group considering there's a lot of other RPG out there; Radiant Historia, Stella Glow, Suikoden series, Etrian Odyssey etc. You shouldn't separate series to backup your research (like FF, KH, Tales, Xenoblade) count them as one game. Ex: you used Persona 4 and 5 as an example of animal mascot. You should find other games, don't use the same one. I think you should've chosen "the hero is a young ordinary child in their teens" than the spiky haired one since Persona and Mario (why'd you chose that game?) doesn't have a spiky-haired MC. Still, good job in making the list. Don't overuse the same game for all of the points next time.
SpongicX (2 months ago)
You forgot those stupid moments where party members leave in the middle of the story, just to pointlessly have those characters rejoin a few seconds later. It’s also annoying when they part for a longer period of time, just to punish players who didn’t grind their whole team . I would love to finally see a JRPG that doesn’t force your party to separate. I’m fine with leaving members to the side, or optional challenges that require doing something without certain characters, but I hate how every JRPG forces you to lose your party constantly.
Bethan Woods (2 months ago)
"Everyone is beautiful." lol 😂
Valquist Velx (2 months ago)
So much Kingdom Hearts in this video.
Passose (2 months ago)
That dude at No.1 was literally making fun of that big sword trope
Tank Tonka (2 months ago)
They left out so much! What about loosing their memory, super hot girl who loves the protagonist but he’s clueless, plot holes, annoying child character who fights with you even though he/she is only 10 years old. And so on
CrownTheJeremy (2 months ago)
What's the game at 1:15 ?
The Gaming Paladin (2 months ago)
just cause they're cliche, means in no way that they are a bad thing, at least not everything that's cliche.
Mattimoo 2 (2 months ago)
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 😙❤
Zeta Sigrid (2 months ago)
Oh yes finally! Falcom games was finally mentioned on Watchmojo video FOR ONCE!!!
Jimenez (2 months ago)
Ffxiii's leveling system was pretty looking, and flashy, but sooo annoying! 😒
weofparadigm (2 months ago)
Nyx doesn't really have different forms, he just changes his attacks a dozen times before he goes down. Kind of a bad example but good list overall.
Kazzy Burgers (2 months ago)
I'm surprise Waifu's isn't on the list.
Daddydagda (2 months ago)
Don't forget about Insta death spells that wipes out the whole party
nintendolife25 (2 months ago)
Here’s one: Completely made-up words and terminology. Now one could argue multiple fiction does this but none holds true more than JRPGs. When they are trying so hard to make the world the player is experiencing unique, they make up a bunch of words, terms, and even language. Just look at the Tales series....they are ridiculous with it.
zeldafan1002 (2 months ago)
Wow, Kingdom Hearts appears a lot here
Shellzie (2 months ago)
Watchmojo really doesn’t like Kingdom Hearts, do they 😂
Ligerwolf Beasttamer (2 months ago)
you forgot... every main hero is... between 16-18 years old...

Number 1: Donald is useless
Gamer 567 (2 months ago)
Not all jrpgs have random encounters.
Sanyi (2 months ago)
You forgot the biggest cliche...they all suck!
Kaiser DaShawn (2 months ago)
I hate when random encounter don't cone when you do want them
Astrolightning00 (2 months ago)
You couldve only included Kingdom Hearts and it all would apply.
Lucas Bernardini (2 months ago)
Okay yes, Kingdom Hearts have every cliche you mentioned (even the honorable mentions) except maybe for magitech... Well kind of. They do need Gummi ship to go through the magic gates that are open by the keyblade... Oh yes, you could at least showed ONE pic of Golden Sun and/or Bravely Default. Or do you only know popular/mainstream games? And what about pokemon? The MOST popular JRPG you didnt include here?...
Gamer Addy 99 (2 months ago)
Random encounters! U either love them or hate them even both.
Robert Ofenloch (2 months ago)
Let's face it, #1 should be "Everyone looks ambiguously female." Especially the anime games. But that might be covered by the first honorable mention. Also, grinding is in NO way a JRPG cliche. It's an ALL-RPG cliche.
alex ruffolo (2 months ago)
WatchMojo Cliche ; Make a top 10 list about anything and put the most popular one as a thumbnail image
Holy Keyblade (2 months ago)
Why do you always draw me in with Kingdom Hearts in the thumbnail
Mistydolphin (2 months ago)
You know what they say: it's not a jrpg unless it ends with a bunch of kids using the power of friendship to kill a god. XD
Jack L (2 months ago)
Other clichés include: -Random aid out of no where from some mystery character -Protagonist being tricked by a character who is easily seen as evil -"You're expected to lose against this boss now so as to beat them later" -Strongest boss in the game isn't the final boss in the game -You MUST face a giant monster at some point. No exceptions! -Protagonist(s) = someone(s) under the age of 18 -(My personal favorite) Not knowing where the f*ck you're supposed to go -(Another personal favorite) Fighting 2+ bosses at once -(And last but not least) "Congrats! You just beat a very powerful boss! But what's this? Your team is all beaten up and almost dead. You should probably heal them. Huh? You used all of your healing items during that fight? Well, I guess your only option is to run to the nearest save point." *Gazes off into the distance* "There's one! It's over there on that hill. I'm sure you can make it there without being attacked by any monsters. Good luck!"
Nicholas Evans (2 months ago)
Power of friendship and bonds are not just tropes in jrpgs. Anime also used it a lot.
Colton Riffle (2 months ago)
Other cliches I know of: - a lost "ancient" civilization with machines and technology far more advanced than anything in the game's present time - airships - kingdoms are always good, empires are always evil
HenriqueRJchiki (1 month ago)
Ascended Dialga you just described the trails series LMAO

Lee 24 (2 months ago)
Wait doomed home town is a cliche?
Strykerx31 (2 months ago)
my personal favorite cliche is the "Under powered Hero told to go on a quest" Cliche. I mean this King or something expect me to go save the land, but all i have is raggy clothes, a stick ,5 golds and a loaf of bread, why not give me armor, weapons, and items for the job and don't force "the only person who can save the world" to buy everything from the store.
