It’s no secret that BvS has drawn widespread ire for its issues with plot and tone. So, in an effort not to dwell on the same issues, we decided to focus on another problem plaguing the film: its ideological failings. Many of the film’s cues are taken straight from Frank Miller’s graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns – a work that paints a very clear philosophical divide between Batman and Superman. But it's in replicating this dynamic that BvS starts to flounder. By exploring some of Miller’s key inspirations, we’ll unveil how the philosophical backbone of The Dark Knight Returns was adapted to Batman v Superman – with lackluster results. Would you say that part of Civil War’s success is because in that movie the differing ideology between Tony and Steve was both existent and their reasoning pretty well defined? I’m new to the channel. I know Earthling Cinema examines themes but do you also have “what went right “ videos?

1. Idiotic upper lip CG (millions wasted) ...it called a $10,000 glue on moustache (see how easy that was, and less wasteful) 2. Worst Batman dialogue ever with worst voice tone: "do u blead..?. u will" fucking shit 3. Batman in a shitty (juggernaut) robot suit? WTF!!! 4. Superman helps to destroy a city & kills millions in the process... wait that's not a hero, or superman, " ...it's a Bird, it's a plane!! NO it's SATAN! " (that one's from Man of Steel, but this is a continuation of that garbage so it applies the same way), with his infinite speed & power he stops giving a shit about people in the world, where it is known that he is faster than Flash, and basically save a million people in a minute or so if he wanted to. (see point #7) 5. Luthor 18y old with hair, and his motivation is he doesn't like superman... fucking lame. 6. poor monotone acting by 99% of the cast. 7. Superman could crush Batman in his stupid tin suit like a styrofoam cup. (Remember how Superman could spin the entire Earth backwards & unwind time?, or how he went under the tectonic plates to straighten the Earth crust so that California would not be swallowed by lava? He is basically a God or near God like creature. Is Batman a guy in an exo suit capable of doing that?...i think not. 8. Script written by a 6y old. 9. Cheap looking visuals. 10. Lame character development. ( Half way through the movie I actually wanted Superman to kill everyone and be done with the shitty story.) plus many other problems, to many to list...
zhengyingli (1 month ago)
How did Superman help destroy a city and kill millions of people? Man of Steel has shown that Superman was nowhere near as fast as the Flash in that particular movie.
Charlie Haase (1 month ago)
You just praised Superman for addressing his doubts, which is the same reason you excoriated Man of Steel. What the hell, dude?
Winged Mirage (1 month ago)
I personally have a soft spot for this movie. I loved how they built up to the fight. It's just the reasoning of the fight and the extra fight shoved in at the end that sucked. This really should have bee two movies. As for them being too similar, sometimes fights happen BECAUSE two people are too similar and don't realize it. Though the nuances in belief are different, the cores are the same. They see each other as corrupted versions of themselves, which adds to the anger.

The idea of Batman vs Superman is good. But Snyder didn't give a fuck to the source material and paid the price for it. Long after the Zack is gone, he will be remembered for this mess of a movie

The biggest question relating to BvS is just how bad is it?Is it the worst superhero movie of the 2010's?Hm i'd say no but i can sort of understand why some fans might feel like that.Is it the worst DCEU movie?Hm maybe but Justice League gives a very strong competition. Also is the 'Save Martha' moment the single worst moment for a superhero movie in the 2010's?That might actually be the case. Its hard to say but i can't think of a single more embarassing moment for superheroes in movies than that. You'd have to go back all the way to Catwoman or Batman and Robin for something worse.

It is certainly odd that whoever made the decisions related to this movie failed to realize that Frank Miller's take on Superman is simply not a viable character - and has no business whatsoever attempting to be in a JLA movie.
zhengyingli (1 month ago)
Zack Snyder actually agrees with you, that's why he said that he used Frank Miller's Superman as a guide on how not to portray Superman.

Jason Clark (1 month ago)
Clark is easy to relate to. He's a good man, an all-American boy raised in small town middle America. Having godlike power might limit the physical challenges you can bring to him, but that's why you need moral challenges. Putting him in situations where the easiest course of action would go against his moral principles, requiring him to choose another harder (relatively) path.

And I'm a professional, so not just personal taste... Too bad that tragedy happened to Zack Snyder. He should do more movies like this one. And Marvel should learn a couple of things.

Guys. Did you just hear on the news that Henry Cavill is no longer Superman? What a disappointment. 🤦‍♂️ It is as if the DCEU is already doomed from the start, which sadly Wisecrack predicted from the start. 😢 There are also already rumors of Ben Affleck to be replaced as Batman. Now this? Warner Bros. & DC's failures make me on the verge of fully shifting to Marvel.

Him giving into the fact that this is his world, that redeems him, in my opinion, to be a god like figure, and for him to connect him with us. He is not only doing it for his own good, but he is doing it for also the world. That is a good part of the film. Sure, the fight between batman v Superman, it is confusing, but the ending was a redeem Superman as a better person

Batman couldn't have less in common with a Rand-ian hero. Rand's ideal would be utterly selfish and devoid of a shred of altruism. Batman spends his life protecting the normal person from criminals.
zhengyingli (2 months ago)
But Batman IS selfish because by protecting others, Batman is fighting for his own values.
Ben Schwartz (2 months ago)
I disagree with the characterization that Batman hates Superman just because, as a Randian hero, he must hate someone whom he can never be as good as. Look to Eddie Willers in Atlas Shrugged, who isn't as smart or ingenious as Hank Rearden, Francisco D'Anconia, or Dagny Taggart, but still works his absolute hardest and makes something out of himself. D'Anconia even says to Rearden at one point something along the lines of "There are so many people out there who, though they could never be as successful as you, could be like Eddie Willers, working their hardest and making the most of what they have." The Randian world view leaves room for more than one hero alone, at the absolute pinnacle of ability. There can always be multiple people who embrace personal responsibility and uncompromising moral righteousness, like Rorschach who won't compromise even in the face of Armageddon, or The Question in Justice League Unlimited who gives the famous "A is A and will always be A" speech before attempting to kill Lex Luthor in order to prevent armageddon. These two won't give up even though they know that there are more powerful, capable beings out there.

i dont like ayn rand although she may b right about something. its all about being a rebellious self sacrificing hero for justice and preserving life and freedom.
StixFerryMan (2 months ago)
The way I saw it was a story of finding one’s self. The fact that Soops goes from reluctant Saviour to doubting his life to sacrificing his life for a cause he truely believes in. The way Bats goes from self righteous anger tinged with self loathing, to someone who fights for someone else, someone who he saw as an enemy. The fact that at the end of the movie, Bat now suffers real guilt, not the spoilt brat kind that has driven him since his parent’s death, but a true selfless guilt of someone who now wishes to help others because it is right. I see growth in the characters, a changing of motivation, of ideals. Even if you feel that their actions don’t change, the reasoning behind those actions do

For all he knew Batman would have wanted to wipe out his whole family,so why give him the first name of the person he will be killing next?
zhengyingli (2 months ago)
Because Superman was such a good person that he thought Batman would be merciful enough to save his mother.
True Gooner (2 months ago)
Came to the same conclusion. Batman is clearly Ayn Rand's heroe and Superman clearly has to be the opposition to that ideal. But Zack seems to have no love for other ideals but egocentrism, even with an established story. What makes this even clearer is knowing that he wanted to make The Fountainhead, kind of reaffirms my hunch of where his head was. He just didn't get the central conflict or he wanted to move the marker closer to what he likes in both characters (only self interest). This going against what an ESTABLISHED story needed to work. It's crazy though, because Zack literally copies most of his movies from page to screen from Frank's stories, so I'm told, especially Watchmen and 300. I mean it's great to be different and to try to make something your own... but clearly, this missed the mark and it has to do with missing the central premise of the battle and the grander scope of ideological conflict. It's also subjective as to what's right and wrong in self-philosophy and the ideals of this movie... but pretension at this level? With a Superman v Batman (Literal title) movie? Just a little too rich for me.

Ayn Rand was a hypocrite at the end. After all her bluster against government aid, when she needed it she took it.

Turey Taino Ayn Rand was actually not hypocritical on that front because since part of her philosophy states that taking welfare is restitution for the money that was taken by the government at gunpoint.

Before I saw any of the DCEU films, I originally thought all the hate for it everywhere was because of the success of Marvel. Especially when Justice League came out, and shortly after Infinity War dropped, I thought it was all because of the Marvel fanboys. Then, I decided to watch these films in chronological order. Wonder Woman was pretty good, so my theory remained solid. Man of Steel, despite what people say, I'd also say was pretty solid. So again, I was thinking to myself "Yup, this hate is definitely from Marvel fanboys who hate DC." Then I saw Suicide Squad, and was like "Eh.... okay, you know what, one "meh" movie so far. That's okay, MCU phase one didn't go so flashy either with Iron Man 2." At this point, I was actually kind of a fan of the DCEU, even if Suicide Squad was there. Then I saw Batman vs Superman and the Justice League... and could not have been more disappointed. I knew exactly why the DCEU was receiving all the hate that it was, and it was from these two films, and some of Suicide Squad. I honestly don't know how two films (three counting Suicide Squad) can be so terrible, it's like you were actually TRYING to make the movie bad. I cannot imagine any of the actors of these films going on set, receiving their lines, and thinking that it was all a good idea. I feel as though Ben Afflec and Henry Cavill, or any of the Justice League members silently think about how much of a failure this cinematic universe is. It still mind boggles me how you can make a film that bad with so many plot holes and cheesy moments, and I'm seriously not exaggerating when I say this. It's really sad how disappointing this is.

I got it to be more of a checks and balances. Bruce resents Clark because Batman sticks to a strict moral code not killing even it makes sense to do so. Superman doesn't kill directly but fighting cross country against other kryptonians destroying all that properly and Bruce's manager. Superman sees Batman as a tyrant ruling through fear not being better. Unfortunately rather than really having either one prove himself to the other we got "your mom's name is the same as mine okay". Justice League failed even worse it changed from Watchmen to Super Friends.

What exactly makes Superman’s character not relatable? That he risks his own life to save others? That he does the right thing, or at least what he believes is the right thing, without seeking reward? That he would save the life of someone he didn’t know, or spare someone he hates? I find it ridiculous that this is considered inhumanly moral. Superman isn’t an infallible god; even he screws up a lot. But does he ever consider not doing what he knows is right? No. And that is perfectly relatable, even to a cynical asshole like me.

King Louis II (3 months ago)
Theme had very little to do with its failure. These movies were hurried and lacked narrative plausibility. WB and DC wanted a payoff they didn't earn. Civil War and Avengers was earned over many Marvel movies. There was a long history of character and plot development in the MCU that made the conflict make sense... inevitable, even. Even The Dark Knight Returns had decades of implied history, based on our previous knowledge of the characters. JL tried to cram a cinematic history into 2 movies, and expected this level of conflict immediately after the initial meet. None of it makes sense, especially since Superman and Batman are established characters with well known temperaments and personalities. That's mostly why it failed. That and terrible casting.
Lenin Verdezoto Pozo (3 months ago)
There's a mistake on the depiction of Superman/ Clark Kent conflict. It's not just the subjetivism of his decition or the obstination on remaining atached to a possition, the factor relies in the conflict of the contradictión of the society of the Uniteed States, that Judges him trough the senate as an Alien that does more evil than good, and the disparity of Clarck trying to be a humana and pursuit his goals as a journalist and failing to achieve the view of justice and being underling as just a pawn of the media. He can't make justice trough the superpowers given to him as Superman, and he can't either make justice trough the languaje and the narrative as a reporter. He is being treaten as an alien in both his personifications. His crisis is not only the ideal of superman as a savior, is the fact that it doesn't matter how much he tries, he never gets the benefit of the doubt in any of his attemps. Batman in exchange ignores the press and the politics and does justice by his standars and follows the principle of justice trough any means, even trough the darknes, he believes even a criminal can make justice trough the face of the anti hero. Superman to batman is the idealistic danger of a superpowered been with the posibility of becoming a monster, and troug the dream secuence that Bruce Wayna has he becomes a pawn of Darkseid and sees his change by the death of the only person that treats him beyond than alien and human, Lois. Lois death becomes his tiping point, and in the comics and the animated series it was portrayed his changed in a world without Lois. The real conflict lies in the situation of the identity and the personality of an altruistic creature, that doesn't belong to Earth and at the same time doesn't belong to the alien race. His in conflict and his paradox it's narrated trough his journey in the movie. The martha link it's only a mistake made by the director, but the narrative takes every role that requires to launch the basic relationship between superman and Batmasn, and even includes Wonder Woman, handled trough the continuous sacruifice of superman that put his life on the line again, the real meaning is never understood due to the length and dept of the movie, but trough a pshycological and narrative aproach the movie contains a perfect balance of tension in growing and the delineation of the exponations of the characters narrative while qadding Lex Luthor as a child figure, but hiding as a villain that manipulates every cjaracter of the whole narative with perfection, even going to the end of planing supermans Doomsday, by creating the creature and even surviving to learn about the next menace of the justice league. In the end nobody got the messague, the goal was to kill Superman, and it was done in perfection, so as done in marvel's civil war, the villain won.

Bring him into outer space and spare the citizens of Metropolis that way as well. But this Superman choose C. Fuck it just fight recklessly with no regard to anything but fighting which is antithetical to what Superman is really suppose to be about, a hero of the people of earth. "a selfless godlike figure" that is debatable. The "selfless" part that is. Now I haven't read or seen much of superman (because I find him lame as a character) but if we try to think about why he is doing all this "good" and what happens when he does. He in my eyes become more of an anti hero. Now would be an good idea for me to come up with all kinds of examples so I'm not just some hot air in a small room. However I don't have the time. What I can say is, in my understanding of what I know of superman. He helps people and fight villains not because he wants to/think it is for the best but because he thinks that is what is the best thing for him to do to stay on earth. Which in my eyes is selfish. He might help others but he does it for selfish reasons. This is backed up by something about in the future he becomes god because he is lonely because all he knows are dead of age. What he does (as I understand) is crating kryptorn (or how it is spelled) with all it's inhabitants and rebirth his true love as a goddess figure. Now this might sound unfair but in my eyes this is the ultimate form of selfishness. He gives himself godlike powers to use it for his own selfish needs. You can't become more selfish than that in my eyes. But this is just me. You can most likely come up with many counter reasons to why everything I just wrote is wrong. Anyway, I didn't try to offend anyone. If I did I'm sorry.

Snyder completely ignores that the symbol on Superman's chest translates to 'Hope'. Superman is supposed to give people hope - that's the point of the character. He can't save everyone, but he can give people hope. Snyder needs to get out of his own ass.

LKNANML (3 months ago)
Many like him yes but I prefer a more debonair, high brow intellectual and corporate mogul than the quirky, fidgety out of date nerd stereotype. Lex Luthor is supposed to be on par with Bruce Wayne. Incredibly well educated, respected in business as leaders and in their philanthropy dealings with the community. The animated universe gets it right most of the time. BVS Luthor seemed out of touch and as an oddball in his own company where people follow him to keep their job because he's the boss no matter how crazy he seems. Granted those who work close with know he has an evil side and some follow out of fear. But that's what makes this world awesome. If we liked all the same things it would be really boring.
