it's a good system.. but the beat is quite boring for kids.. I can't get them to pay attention if the beat is not catchy :(
ELF Kids Videos (3 years ago)
+capive22 This one is meant to be fairly simple. Sometimes with very complicated BGMs it can overwhelm the goal of the chant. But thank you very much for taking the time to comment!
Patty R (3 years ago)
it would be better for ESL learners if you asked what did you do yesterday? the today confuses them into thinking it is present
EFL and ESL learners need to be taught to recognize "did" as past tense in spite of the word today. On the other hand, it wouldn't be so difficult to fit "yesterday" to a beat.
ELF Kids Videos (3 years ago)
+Patty R It might be, but it didn't fit the beat so well. ;-)
Leslie Howard-Redweik (4 years ago)
It's not that it's wrong. It's that is a poor choice to teach the lesson to those just learning the concept.  I have six kids - all taught at home.  'Yesterday' would be better for past.
ELF Kids Videos (4 years ago)
+Leslie Howard-Redweik I've had over 1,000 kids in my school and none of them had a problem with it. I do agree that it could be easier on the teacher to use yesterday, so you're point is well taken! Also...way to go on homeschooling 6 kids! That takes a tremendous amount of energy and work. Bravo!
Leslie Howard-Redweik (4 years ago)
You should NOT use the word 'today' for past tense. Confusing to the kids.
ELF Kids Videos (4 years ago)
Perhaps we are just talking about the difference between teaching a language and using a language. For sure, "What did you do today?" is a completely natural question in the home or with friends, but it may make it difficult for teachers to teach (yesterday is easier as a concept!).  Perhaps teachers could draw a clock on the board showing the time (maybe 5PM?). Then, create a zone from 8AM to 5PM to show that the question refers to this period...the period BEFORE the question was asked. Any other ideas?
hullcityafc72 (4 years ago)
+Leslie Howard-Redweik It's quite natural to ask "What did you do today at school?", kids don't even notice grammar when they're young anyway, I wouldn't go confusing them with the Present Perfect so despite being grammatically incorrect, nobody asks their kids "What have you done today?"
Leslie Howard-Redweik (4 years ago)
The idea is to teach, using the best and easiest ideas first making it easiest to remember. It would be much better that way. People use this as supplemental to their main learning devices and this somewhat conflicts with those. :)
mulambolipe (4 years ago)
+ELF Kids Videos You should change "today" for "yesterday".
ELF Kids Videos (4 years ago)
+Leslie Howard-Redweik Do you think so? We've used a time line and the kids tell say things like, "I woke up. I ate breakfast. I went to school." They don't seem to have any issues with understanding as it is the same as their L1.

Monika M. (4 years ago)
I just came across this video, and have a question regarding tenses. Why did you use the past simple, and not the present perfect? Today hasn't finished yet. Or is it because you see the activities as complete actions? Tenses really confuse me!
ELF Kids Videos (4 years ago)
It could be a question which we ask in the afternoon or evening, or perhaps something a parent might ask after a child returns from school or a husband/wife is asked after returning from work. Even though the day it not over, there were still events which happened earlier in the day that people may be asking about. Does that make sense?

ELF Kids Videos (5 years ago)
We will also create simple present videos, but currently we are working to create those for our students at our school. It will take some time...but we'll do it! Thanks for watching! :-)
Le Hang (5 years ago)
And why don't you do videos about the present simple verbs and the present continous verbs before the past simple verbs? If so, it isn't difficult at all when they learn the past verbs. And you can use the same pictures as well. My child and my students like your videos very much. But they are not really put in a good curriculum, I mean, in a good order for students to learn, and easier fot teacher to teach.
Le Hang (5 years ago)
I don't think so. I'm a teacher of English for a group of 8 students. They can quickly understand He or She by seeing the pictures. To enhance learning, the teacher can pre-teach He or She. Each video can be short, only 4-6 verbs. Ss have learnt the present simple and present continous before, so it is not too difficult for them to learn past tense.
ELF Kids Videos (5 years ago)
Thanks for your comment. We may do that in the future. Most of our students are quite young, so representing he or she in the video will be a challenge. We'll work on it though!
Le Hang (5 years ago)
And there should be more videos with IRREGULAR VERBS WITH OTHER PRONOUNS, which can be organised as a story. For example: What happened? He had a party. She took a test. They bought a new house. He lost his pen. ...
