Check out these tips on what you'll see on a visit to the Tower of London, also known as the Bloody Tower. If you like haunted houses, don't miss the ghost tour! The Tower of London is also known as the Bloody Tower, and it’s earned the name. Since 1066, when William the Conqueror had it built to frighten his subjects into submission and to threaten those who wanted to invade his kingdom, it has seen the death and imprisonment of royalty–along with a lot of other people. This is where the former queens Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn were executed. Prince Edward V was kept prisoner in the Tower before he vanished, as were bishops, kings, dukes, and more. The Tower of London is such an imposing fortress, it’s where the Crown Jewels are kept safe. With all that bloodshed, it’s no wonder some believe the Tower of London is haunted; you can even take a ghost tour. If that’s not your thing, check out the medieval palace inside the Tower instead. See the Yeoman Warders–or the “Beefeaters”–to learn about the old Royal Bodyguard. Search for the resident ravens; it’s said that England will fall if they leave the Tower. The Tower of London has so much history, you can’t afford to miss it.

London Video Tour: The City

05:24
The City of London is one of the oldest parts of the capitol, as it is located where London was first founded almost 2000 years ago. The City of London roughly constitutes the same area that was mostly unaltered until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century. Known as the "Square Mile", the City nowadays is roughly bounded by the River Thames to the south, Chancery Lane to the west, Charterhouse Street to the north, and the Tower of London to the east. Although the old City's gates are long gone, you can still see their location in the street names. Join us on this video tour as we explore the Tower of London, Leadenhall Market, the City's financial district, St. Paul's Cathedral and more! The Tower of London To the east of the City you'll find the Tower of London by the River Thames. The tower was built in 1066, and the imposing building still reflects its turbulent past. In its long years, the Tower has been a fortress, a state prison, and it was also used as a place of execution. Nowadays, the Tower of London is open for visitors. You can see the crown jewels, royal armor and of course the Tower's famous ravens here. Legend says that if the ravens were ever to leave the Tower, England would fall. Leadenhall Market in the City Leadenhall Market on Gracechurch Street dates back to the 14th century, and is one of the oldest markets in London. Previously a meat, game and poultry market, the covered market was redesigned in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones, who created a beautiful roof structure. This, coupled with the cobbled walkways and beautiful decorations, make it a popular tourist attraction. Nowadays, you can also find clothes shops and more next to the flowers and fresh produce that are still sold here. When walking through the market don't forget to look up: you can still see the hooks on the walls where fresh produce was displayed in Victorian times. London & the River Thames The River Thames passes the City of London to the south and runs through the center of Greater London. The Thames used to play a vital role in London's economy. Although this has changed in modern times, the river is still an essential part of the City. To explore the city in a different way, you can catch one of the riverboat tours that navigate the Thames. From the water you'll be able to see many of London's most famous attractions, such as the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Big Ben, Westminster Palace and more! The Financial District City of London The City of London is one of the most important financial districts in the world. You will find the offices of more than 500 banks at the Bank of England in the City. Mostly employed in the financial sector, there are over 300 thousand people working within the City's boundaries. As London's foremost financial and legal center, there are many people who visit the City on business. Tower of London - Time to Travel

07:55
The Tower of London is visited by two-million tourists each year. William the Conquer built the White Tower fortress on the River Thames shortly after being crowned King of England in 1066. Over the centuries the Tower has served as a royal residence and prision. The Tower has played a bloody role in English history. Thousands were executed on nearby Tower Hill and some, including three Queens of England, were beheaded on the Tower Green. Two young prinices were taken to the Tower and never seen alive again. The bodies of two children were found years later sealed in a wall - a murder mystery from a time long gone by. Today, Yeoman Warders, also known as "Beefeaters" lead guided tours offering a dynamic and often humorous version of the history of this special place. The Crown Jewels are kept in the Tower. See the Traitors Gate, The Bloody Tower and the Chapel Royal. Take Time to Travel to the Tower of London, it's a living embodiment of English history and well worth a visit. Special thanks to Yoeman Warder Mitch for a great tour.

Tower of London & Tower Bridge Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Tower of London & tower Bridge in England. The Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdom’s capital city. Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Tower’s original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors’ Gate into the notorious dungeons. In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day. It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigours of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when official execution was replaced by cold-blooded murder. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry The Eighth, was the most famous of those who fell victim to the Tower. Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian technology and construction. Its drawbridge once allowed large sailing ships to travel to the centre of the city. Today, however, the majority of large ships dock downstream and now the famous old bridge is raised around nine hundred times each year to facilitate the passage of numerous vessels that travel along the Thames. Even today the River Thames is ruled by this majestic bridge and the spectacular view from the Bridge’s 50 metre high walkway is truly fascinating. Tower Bridge and the Tower Of London are without any doubt two of London’s most striking and fascinating landmarks.

The Tower of London - London Landmarks - High Definition (HD) YouTube Video

03:06
Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison since at least 1100, although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site. The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. The Tower has served variously as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public records office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. From the early 14th century until the reign of Charles II, a procession would be led from the Tower to Westminster Abbey on the coronation of a monarch. In the absence of the monarch, the Constable of the Tower is in charge of the castle. This was a powerful and trusted position in the medieval period. In the late 15th century the castle was the prison of the Princes in the Tower. Under the Tudors, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, and despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower". Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture and death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists and 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin and John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures. In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison, and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired and the castle reopened to the public. Today the Tower of London is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. It is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site. "Inconvenient Picture" reveals TRUTH about Tower of LONDON

14:28
At least one of the back towers was added in later times. The Normans repaired and added to a heavily damaged Roman Tower which was built between 250AD and about 300AD, reflecting its late Roman design. Look at this quote I just found in Gildas, regarding towers built in Southern England! I am unsure if it actually relates to the Roman Tower of London... but it would seem that preventing ships sailing up the Thames would resist a Barbarian attack! "18... The Romans, therefore, left the country, giving notice that they could no longer be harassed by such laborious expeditions, nor suffer the Roman standards, with so large and brave an army, to be worn out by sea and land by fighting against these un-warlike, plundering vagabonds; but that the islanders, inuring themselves to warlike weapons, and bravely fighting, should valiantly protect their country, their property, wives and children, and, what is dearer than these, their liberty and lives; that they should not suffer their hands to be tied behind their backs by a nation which, unless they were enervated by idleness and sloth, was not more powerful than themselves, but that they should arm those hands with buckler, sword, and spear, ready for the field of battle; and, because they thought this also of advantage to the people they were about to leave, they, with the help of the miserable natives, built a wall different from the former, by public and private contributions, and of the same structure as walls generally, extending in a straight line from sea to sea, between some cities, which, from fear of their enemies, had there by chance been built. They then give energetic counsel to the timorous natives, and leave them patterns by which to manufacture arms. Moreover, on the south coast where their vessels lay, as there was some apprehension lest the barbarians might land, they erected towers at stated intervals, commanding a prospect of the sea; and then left the island never to return." http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/1949/pg1949-images.html This sounds a lot like Rome in the time of Aetius, in the 450s. Rome had lost Africa to the Vandals a generation or so earlier and was struggling to maintain the remainder against a horde of barbarians with a much reduced income (only 40,000 pounds of gold per annum), which could only maintain an army at maximum of 30,000 soldiers, far too small. Even so 2/3 of its annual income was required for this! By this stage, the Roman emperor only wished to reside in Ravenna, not liking the squalor of Rome. I believe the tower possibly went up in the late 200s or the 300s, at about the same time the walls around Chichester. Any later and the Romano-British would have had to have built it for themselves and I am unsure if the economy would have been powerful enough for such an endeavour. In addition there was a building there called the Arx Palatina. (Palatine Fortress). There was another Arx Palatina on the other side of Londonium on the river bank, where Blackfriars now is. I believe this was converted into Blackfriars Monastery but I would have to look into this further. Important links! Tower of London K-Rated by William & Martha

03:30
For more info, news and offers visit http://www.kidrated.com William and Martha visit the Tower of London. Founded nearly a millennium ago when the first foundations were laid in 1078, The Tower of London has been expanded upon over the centuries by many kings and queens. William The Conqueror decided he needed a stronghold to keep the citizens of London in line and the site he chose to build on, Claudius, the Roman Emperor, had used as a fortress more than a thousand years before. In fact traces of the Roman wall are still seen within the Tower grounds. The addition of other smaller towers, extra buildings, walls and walkways, gradually transformed the original building into the splendid example of castle, fortress, prison, palace and finally museum that we enjoy today. IT HAS been used as a fortress , used to imprison (for many an accused, it was the last sight they saw on earth), as a home for kings and queens, and as a royal mint and treasury. Originally, the caps at the top of the four turrets were conical, but were replaced by the present onion-shaped ones in the sixteenth century. It was Henry III that renamed the entire area the Tower of London. Although he used it as a prison, he continued to use it as a palace and entertained guests and many came with gifts of animals. These gifts were kept near the drawbridge where he built Lion Tower; a zoo where visitors would be greeted by roaring beasts. Today it houses the Crown Jewels and is keeper to the Royal Ravens. Today the official title of the Tower is still 'Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London'. The ravens at the Tower of London: the guardians of the Tower

03:05
Legend says that the kingdom and the Tower will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the fortress... There are nine ravens at the Tower today (the required six plus a few spare!). Their lodgings are to be found next to the Wakefield Tower. These magnificent birds, large members of the genus Corvus, the crow family, respond only to the Ravenmaster and should not be approached too closely by anyone else!

Tower of London - The Arrow Video Story

01:27
Order your copy here: http://bit.ly/2kmGPBP MOTHER ENGLAND MEETS FATHER TERROR! Having made their mark on American horror cinema with three colourful adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe – The Fall of the House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum and Tales of Terror – Vincent Price and director Roger Corman enjoyed a brief hiatus from the macabre author with Tower of London. Shot in black and white, the film was loosely based on the Universal horror picture of the same name as well as two Shakespeare plays: a dash of Macbeth and a dollop of Richard III. Price plays Richard of Gloucester, brother to a dying king and eager to take his place on the throne. When he is overlooked in favour of their sibling, the Duke of Clarence, things take a murderous turn. Richard goes on a murderous rage, only for the ghosts of those he has slain to return from the grave and haunt him… Less well-known than the Poe movies, Tower of London is no slouch. Price relishes the opportunity to flex his Shakespearean muscles, just as he would eleven years later with Theatre of Blood, and Corman works wonders, as usual, with his low budget. If you’ve ever wondered what a drive-in Shakespeare film would look like, you’re in the right place! OOPS! "Tower of London" REALLY built in 300 AD, then CATASTROPHE, 'fixed up' by "Normans"

09:06
Link to medallion depicting White Tower: http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=1616647&partId=1&searchText=medallion+beaurains&place=34855&page=1 I've earlier said the Normans didn't built the Norman mottes. Now this! Some might say I have something against the Normans... if that is their real name? Weren't they really 'West Romans'? The West Frankish state was a vestige of the Carolingian 'Roman Empire'! Did they see themselves as re-conquering Romans?! Here is the full quote just in case no-one believes me: "There is a connection between coins and medals going back at least to Roman times. The Romans struck coins which commemorated some particular event or showed some particular person. They were soon striking commemorative medals. One of the most famous formed part of what is known as the Arras Treasure. This famous treasure, which takes its name from the find-spot, contained a large gold medal showing an interesting scene. Constantinus Chlorus is shown on horseback, facing right. Before him is a kneeling figure with arms outstretched. Below the figure is the abbreviation LON, for London. In the foreground a Roman galley filled with soldiers is afloat on the Thames. What has always intrigued the author is the fact that the kneeling figure has almost forecast the appearance of the present tower of London since it bears something of the appearance of the White Tower, which in fact was not built for some centuries to come (c. 1072). Military architecture had not, apparently, changed so much in the interval. The subject of the whole little scene thus commemorated is the entry of Constantius Chlorus into London" (p. 104, Beginner's Guide to Coin Collecting, Howard Linecar.) In conventional history the Normans conquered everyone and built everything, but this is not quite true! The Tower of London is obviously a Roman building, Late-Roman in style. It is very clear that the Normans at least 'fixed it up', or were they really, actually Normans? Normans derive from the Soissons Kingdom which seems to have been the only remaining offshoot of the west- Roman Empire, and the LAST TO FALL... it fell AFTER Rome! It therefore retained enormous vestiges of its former glory. When the Normans invaded England, did they actually see themselves as returning re-conquerors? Did they call themselves 'Normans' as we call them or did they have another name for themselves? In short.... 'what's going on?!' The Norman state was actually the West-Frankish state with a degree of Autonomy and not some independent 'Normandy' at all. But here is the thing... what's the tower of London doing on this British coin of Constantine II? I read this in a book on numismatics long ago and decided to make a video about it! It seems the tower was possibly devastated in the SUPER-CATASTROPHE which triggered the Dark Ages. I believe that the population of Europe declined 95% in this time... a subject for another video! If we look at the Tower of London is it really Norman or earlier? It appears Late Roman to me. In fact the Normans are said to have 'rebuilt' a lot of Roman buildings in England. Why on earth would this be? They also re-built Colchester Cathedral which I consider to actually be Camelot! The fact is there was some succession of catastrophes in the Dark Ages which NOBODY talks about! You even look at maps from the period... French maps and they think that the English territories were inside the political boundaries of France?! Important links! Ancient History : Bloody Tower of London - Full Documentary

43:03
The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard I, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

Leonard COHEN - Tower of Song (with lyrics)

07:17
From Cohen’s “London Live” (2009); also included in “I’m Your Man” (1988). The recording here is a bit different given the time span ( he will soon turn eighty vs being in his mid-fifties in the first recording). It is also different because it was done at a live concert while on a world tour as opposed to a studio recording. The “tower of song” represents the whole area of music (i.e. singing, composing, etc) and the people who are in this business. Cohen incorporates themes of aging (grey hair), loneliness (looking out the window, burning bridges), melancholy (so damn close to everything lost) , irony (the golden voice) and sexuality (crazy for love, not coming on),and regret (..don’t know how the bridges got this wide). Some might say that this is a bit of a stretch in interpreting these lyrics. As Cohen says about judgement, “I may be wrong”. One thing’s for sure: parts of his poem show that he can be humorous and light-hearted, not just dark and depressing.

In 2014 the Tower of London will be commemorating the centenary anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War through a major art installation, in collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins. The Tower's dry moat will be filled with 888,246 ceramic poppies -- one for each British fatality during the war. This first film documents the making of the ceramic poppies in Derby. Paul Cummins talks through process of turning blocks of clay into ceramic poppies which will fill the moat at the Tower of London.
