History Of Steam Locomotives Documentary - History TV A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine,[1] first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines. A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks.[2] In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars. Traditionally, locomotives pulled trains from the front. However, push-pull operation has become common, where the train may have a locomotive (or locomotives) at the front, at the rear, or at each end. Prior to locomotives, the motive force for railroads had been generated by various lower-technology methods such as human power, horse power, gravity or stationary engines that drove cable systems. The first successful locomotives were built by Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick. In 1804 his unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Although the locomotive hauled a train of 10 long tons (11.2 short tons; 10.2 t) of iron and 70 passengers in five wagons over nine miles (14 km), it was too heavy for the cast iron rails used at the time. Steam Engine History

09:17
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Since the late 1700s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first applications were removing water from mines. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicles such as traction engines and the railway locomotives which are commonly just called steam engines outside America. The stationary steam engine was a key component of the Industrial Revolution, allowing factories to locate where water power was unavailable. Today steam turbines generate about 90% of the electric power in the United States using a variety of heat sources. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated into steam in a boiler until it reaches a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on steam supplied from a separate boiler.

The Steam Engine ~ James Watt

14:30
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Using boiling water to produce mechanical motion goes back over 2000 years, but early devices were not practical. The Spanish inventor Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont patented in 1606 the first steam engine. In 1698 Thomas Savery patented a steam pump that used steam in direct contact with the water being pumped. Savery's steam pump used condensing steam to create a vacuum and draw water into a chamber, and then applied pressurized steam to further pump the water. Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine was the first commercial true steam engine using a piston, and was used in 1712 for pumping in a mine. James Watt,(30 January 1736 (19 January 1736 OS) – 25 August 1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world.

From Steam Machine to Locomotive I THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

06:32
The invention of the steam machine changed the world. Many smart engineers worked on perfecting the efficiency of this groundbreaking technology. But who turned the simple principle of a steam engine into the speedy steel locomotives, frequenting thousands of kilometers of railroads and connecting the world during the Industrial Revolution? Soon steam boats and trains accelerated the world and furthered the ever prospering new world. To this day railways dominate many landscapes and trains connect millions of places. » The Complete PLAYLIST: http://bit.ly/TheIndustrialRevolution » More Videos: The History of Sound Recording: http://bit.ly/SoundRecordingHistory Reasons for the Industrial Revolution: http://bit.ly/IndustrialReasons » JOIN OUR COMMUNITY FOR MORE HISTORY KNOWLEDGE! How Do Steam Locomotives Work - Steam Engines Explained

03:36
This was probably one of the hardest things to animate, especially the rods and cranks. With more time I would've been able to fully and properly animate them - but, alas. Time was my enemy. The video explains how steam locomotives use a fuel (usually coal) to start a fire and get water boiling, in order to create steam, which drives the reciprocating piston. Much like a piston in your car, although there there's one tiny "explosion" that happens when the piston is on the top of the stroke (along with a few other pistons). In reciprocating steam engines, pistons get pushed and pushed, meaning: They get pushed by pressurised steam from both sides, alternating (obviously). Using this back-and-forth motion, using a smart connection to the drive wheel - offsetting it from the center - you can get that wheel to move. And thus, move the train (and whatever it's pulling). There are different types of steam engine, the most popular one (and the one used in most steam locomotives) is the reciprocating piston engine. A piston moves left and right, pushed by (super)heated steam. This directly drives the wheels. A few things were skipped in the animation, such as the steam whistle or how the safety valve works. I also left out the superheater, because of time constraints. Basically, what a superheater does, is run the steam entering the main steam pipe and rerouting it passed the firetubes, thus further heating the steam. This to make absolutely sure the water in the steam is too hot to condens in the pistons. Of course there is more to the story of locomotives and trains than just how they work, the whole idea of moving cargo by train is interesting. As is the rules of the road - or rail, rather - that apply. 🌏🌍🌎 Care to add your own language in subtitles? http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?v=nd2Ii4OGQ4k&ref=share Awesome: ▶▶ Become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyD3sEJLC52UzR1wjtclsPw/?sub_confirmation=1 Get in touch: ▶ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Reddit: http://www.facebook.com/u/sebasvandenbrink ▶ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Web: https://sebvandenbrink.com/ Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_engine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive_components https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebox_(steam_engine)

At Blists Hill victorian village, Ironbridge, there is a working replica of the first operational steam loco designed by Richard Trevithick in 1804, predating Stephensons 'Rocket' by some 25 yrs. Sadly it was very heavy and not reliable enough for its initial backers to continue with. Trevithick then continued to work on steam engines for the mines.

The railroad era in the United States began in 1830 when Peter Cooper's locomotive, Tom Thumb, first steamed along 13 miles (21 km) of Baltimore and Ohio railroad track. In 1833, the nation's second railroad ran 136 miles (219 km) from Charleston to Hamburg in South Carolina. Not until the 1850s, though, did railroads offer long distance service at reasonable rates. A journey from Philadelphia to Charleston involved eight different gauges, which meant that passengers and freight had to change trains seven times. Only at places like Bowling Green, Kentucky, the railroads were connected to one another. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that opened in 1830 was the first to evolve from a single line to a network in the United States. By 1831, a steam railway connected Albany and Schenectady, New York, a distance of 16 miles, which was covered in 40 minutes. The years between 1850 and 1890 saw phenomenal growth in the US railroad system, which at its peak constituted one third of the world's total mileage. Although the American Civil War placed a temporary halt to major new developments, the conflict did demonstrate the enormous strategic importance of railways at times of war. After the war, major developments include the first elevated railway built in New York in 1867 as well as the symbolically important first transcontinental railroad completed in 1869...

The video quality may not be very good, because this was originally an old VHS with older video quality. This part of the video talks about how a steam engine works and about the early age of railroads.

James Watt (Steam Engine) - Greatest Inventors of All Time

00:55
James Watt may have been the single most responsible person in bringing about the Industrial Revolution. He made the steam engine dramatically more efficient by introducing a separate condenser that avoided wasting energy, which radically improved the machine’s power output and transformed it into the workhorse of factory production. In 1781, after much financial hardship and struggle, Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. In a flash, new classes of industry were economically viable, setting off a rapid period of immense economic and social change across world. Watt also developed the concept of horsepower, and invented the document copier, patenting the device in 1780. The principle on which the machine is based remained in use until the arrival of modern photocopiers and the watt unit of power is named after him.

Steam Locomotive - History of British First Steam Engines

History of Train Whistles

02:25
Many recordings had bad quality as the recording was taken right next to the whistle so you will have to bear with the ear rape nature of these whistle recordings. Note all will not be covered only a select few I decided to use for the video. The American train whistle has a signature calling to it. The calling of thousands of tons of freight or passengers destined for far away destinations. From their start in the 1820s and 1830s, they've moved people and goods across the country. In this video, you can see the evolution and differences in sounds overtime with their accompanying locomotives that may have worn the whistle at some time. If this video gets a good amount of likes and if you think I should make a history of diesel locomotive horns, comment below and let me know how you like this one and the diesel locomotive idea.

Old Steam Trains!

09:27
In this video, we take a look at a couple of very old steam locomotives that are all still running today. These steam locomotives were all built before the year 1900. The first is Eureka and Palisades Number 4, a small narrow gauge 4-4-0 built in 1875. It is the oldest narrow gauge steam engine of this type running in the U.S. The engine is privately owned by Las Vegas, NV resident Dan Markoff and occasionally makes public runs on tourist railroads. The second locomotive is Virginia and Truckee 22, the Inyo. This 4-4-0 was also built in 1875 and currently runs on special occasions at the Nevada State RR Museum in Carson City, Nevada. Finally, we see Denver and Rio Grande number 315, built in 1895. It is currently maintained by the Durango Railroad Historical Society in Silverton, CO. Featured on the cover of Live Steam Magazine Sept / Oct 2016 issue, Ernie Beskowiney put approximately 7 years and 35,000 hours into the design and construction of this flawless 7.5" gauge live steam locomotive. It is nearly entirely CNC'd out of stainless steel and is slightly larger than 1/8 scale. The operating pressure is 150 PSI and develops about 483lbs of tractive effort. It has pulled a train of 48 people without blinking. Here is Ernie firing up and running the locomotive at the Bitter Creek Western railroad. For more information, see the Sept / Oct 2016 issue of Live Steam Magazine, available from Village Press.

Steam Locomotive Controls [4K]

21:17
•A video guide that walks through and describes the functions of the various controls in the cab of Denver and Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) steam locomotive #491. Big thanks to Mike Spera for heading the restoration on this wonderful piece of American history. •The locomotive seen in the video is Denver and Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) mikado (2-8-2) #491, one of the largest narrow gauge locomotives ever created. It now runs at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. It has ~37,100 pounds of tractive effort, and weighs ~150 tons or ~302,000 pounds. It was built in 1928 by the D&RGW Burnham shops in Denver, Colorado using the boiler off of a standard gauge D&RGW 2-8-0. #491 is a pristine example of a locomotive perfectly suited for rugged, mountain climbing work. •Thanks to Erik Lindgren (@ColoradoRailPhotographer) for the great still images used in this video.
