History Of Steam Locomotives Documentary - History TV A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine,[1] first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines. A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks.[2] In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars. Traditionally, locomotives pulled trains from the front. However, push-pull operation has become common, where the train may have a locomotive (or locomotives) at the front, at the rear, or at each end. Prior to locomotives, the motive force for railroads had been generated by various lower-technology methods such as human power, horse power, gravity or stationary engines that drove cable systems. The first successful locomotives were built by Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick. In 1804 his unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Although the locomotive hauled a train of 10 long tons (11.2 short tons; 10.2 t) of iron and 70 passengers in five wagons over nine miles (14 km), it was too heavy for the cast iron rails used at the time. Steam Engine History

09:17
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Since the late 1700s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first applications were removing water from mines. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicles such as traction engines and the railway locomotives which are commonly just called steam engines outside America. The stationary steam engine was a key component of the Industrial Revolution, allowing factories to locate where water power was unavailable. Today steam turbines generate about 90% of the electric power in the United States using a variety of heat sources. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated into steam in a boiler until it reaches a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on steam supplied from a separate boiler.

How To Fire Up a Steam Locomotive [4K]

37:32
•A step-by-step video, with descriptions, on how to fire up a coal-burning steam locomotive. The entire 6 - 7 hour process was shortened down to ~37 minutes in this video to highlight most of the main points. •The locomotive seen in the video is Denver and Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) mikado (2-8-2) #491, one of the largest narrow gauge locomotives ever created. It now runs at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. It has ~37,100 pounds of tractive effort, and weighs ~150 tons or ~302,000 pounds. It was built in 1928 by the D&RGW Burnham shops in Denver, Colorado using the boiler off of a standard gauge D&RGW 2-8-0. #491 is a pristine example of a locomotive perfectly suited for rugged, mountain climbing work.

The Steam Engine ~ James Watt

14:30
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Using boiling water to produce mechanical motion goes back over 2000 years, but early devices were not practical. The Spanish inventor Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont patented in 1606 the first steam engine. In 1698 Thomas Savery patented a steam pump that used steam in direct contact with the water being pumped. Savery's steam pump used condensing steam to create a vacuum and draw water into a chamber, and then applied pressurized steam to further pump the water. Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine was the first commercial true steam engine using a piston, and was used in 1712 for pumping in a mine. James Watt,(30 January 1736 (19 January 1736 OS) – 25 August 1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world.

History of Train Whistles

02:25
Many recordings had bad quality as the recording was taken right next to the whistle so you will have to bear with the ear rape nature of these whistle recordings. Note all will not be covered only a select few I decided to use for the video. The American train whistle has a signature calling to it. The calling of thousands of tons of freight or passengers destined for far away destinations. From their start in the 1820s and 1830s, they've moved people and goods across the country. In this video, you can see the evolution and differences in sounds overtime with their accompanying locomotives that may have worn the whistle at some time. If this video gets a good amount of likes and if you think I should make a history of diesel locomotive horns, comment below and let me know how you like this one and the diesel locomotive idea.

James Watt (Steam Engine) - Greatest Inventors of All Time

00:55
James Watt may have been the single most responsible person in bringing about the Industrial Revolution. He made the steam engine dramatically more efficient by introducing a separate condenser that avoided wasting energy, which radically improved the machine’s power output and transformed it into the workhorse of factory production. In 1781, after much financial hardship and struggle, Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. In a flash, new classes of industry were economically viable, setting off a rapid period of immense economic and social change across world. Watt also developed the concept of horsepower, and invented the document copier, patenting the device in 1780. The principle on which the machine is based remained in use until the arrival of modern photocopiers and the watt unit of power is named after him.

How Do Steam Locomotives Work - Steam Engines Explained

03:36
This was probably one of the hardest things to animate, especially the rods and cranks. With more time I would've been able to fully and properly animate them - but, alas. Time was my enemy. The video explains how steam locomotives use a fuel (usually coal) to start a fire and get water boiling, in order to create steam, which drives the reciprocating piston. Much like a piston in your car, although there there's one tiny "explosion" that happens when the piston is on the top of the stroke (along with a few other pistons). In reciprocating steam engines, pistons get pushed and pushed, meaning: They get pushed by pressurised steam from both sides, alternating (obviously). Using this back-and-forth motion, using a smart connection to the drive wheel - offsetting it from the center - you can get that wheel to move. And thus, move the train (and whatever it's pulling). There are different types of steam engine, the most popular one (and the one used in most steam locomotives) is the reciprocating piston engine. A piston moves left and right, pushed by (super)heated steam. This directly drives the wheels. A few things were skipped in the animation, such as the steam whistle or how the safety valve works. I also left out the superheater, because of time constraints. Basically, what a superheater does, is run the steam entering the main steam pipe and rerouting it passed the firetubes, thus further heating the steam. This to make absolutely sure the water in the steam is too hot to condens in the pistons. Of course there is more to the story of locomotives and trains than just how they work, the whole idea of moving cargo by train is interesting. As is the rules of the road - or rail, rather - that apply. 🌏🌍🌎 Care to add your own language in subtitles? http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?v=nd2Ii4OGQ4k&ref=share Awesome: ▶▶ Become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyD3sEJLC52UzR1wjtclsPw/?sub_confirmation=1 Get in touch: ▶ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Reddit: http://www.facebook.com/u/sebasvandenbrink ▶ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Web: https://sebvandenbrink.com/ Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_engine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive_components https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebox_(steam_engine)

The video quality may not be very good, because this was originally an old VHS with older video quality. This part of the video talks about how a steam engine works and about the early age of railroads.

The engine has many accomplishments under its name, including being the first streamlined locomotive in NSW, the first steam locomotive to cross Australia, the only to visit all main line states and territories and more.

Steam Locomotive Bells and Whistles

03:21
Since the early days of railroading, bells and whistles have played an important part in the safe operation of locomotives and trains. The DVD “Steam Locomotive Bells and Whistles” demonstrates many examples of using these devices. It also explains why and when bells and whistles are used. A steam locomotive’s whistle is both a warning device and a means of communication. Before two-way radios were invented, railroad crews used various ways to “speak” with one another by using hand signals during the day, lanterns in darkness, and the sound of the steam whistle. You will learn what many whistle combinations mean to railroad crews and how they provide warnings to the general public. We provide samples of thirty different steam locomotives from our DVD library, using extended scenes to provide enjoyable examples of bells and whistles used to warn and communicate. This informative program about bells and whistles is intended for younger railfans, but we think people of all ages will enjoy and learn something new while watching lots and lots of great steam action! The program is 52 minutes in length, plus an additional 42 minutes of previews of the DVDs used in the production of Steam Locomotive Bells and Whistles! The DVD is just $16 + shipping. INDIA: "FAIRY QUEEN" WORLD'S OLDEST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE

02:11
Eng/Hindi/Nat The oldest steam locomotive in the world is up and running again. The " Fairy Queen " steam engine was built in 1855 and has been resurrected after being kept in a museum to rekindle the nostalgia of the early British colonial times in India. The mini train hauled by the vintage machine is aimed at the weekend travellers and foreign tourists and starts its commercial run from October 31. The oldest locomotive in the world proving it's still not run out of steam. After a complete overhaul, the historic " Fairy Queen " is ready to haul its admirers in a mini train of two carriages. The engine was built in 1855 by the British locomotive firm Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson for the East India Railways. The vintage machine has been certified the oldest working steam engine by the Guinness Book of World records. Historical records show that the engine was used to ferry troops to crush the Indian uprising against the British in 1857. After the British left India in 1947, Fairy Queen was used only for short distance travel. With the advent of the more advanced diesel and electric engines, the steam engines fell into complete disuse. The Fairy Queen was kept on display in the National Rail Museum in the Indian capital for nearly twenty years before its potential as a tourist attraction was realised. Last year the engine was resurrected after a few repairs to the boiler and the brakes. The engine has also been adapted to run on broad gauge rail tracks after several trial runs. The Fairy Queen made its first successful journey of 170 kilometers last year from New Delhi to the city of Alwar. Those looking after its maintenance say despite being behind the time technologically, the engine is in perfect condition. SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) "This is world's oldest engine which is in working condition. Many engines made after it , even those less than 50 years old , have had to be discarded. This engine runs extremely well despite being so old." SUPER CAPTION: Nathu Ram, Engine maintenance engineer The Fairy Queen weighs 26 tons and can be driven at speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour. But drivers keep the speed limited to about 40 kilometers an hour because of its age. It may not be the fastest train running but it does help its passengers to relive a bygone era with its sights and sounds. Indian railway system is one of the biggest network of trains in the world that started running in 1853. Many artefacts of the early colonial time have been damaged beyond repairs . Travel writer Bill Aitken is one of the many admirers of India's rich railways heritage. He says thousands of such priceless antiques in India are just waiting to be resurrected. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We have something unique and still functioning like the Fairy Queen...and its Dickens to get people aware that you got a terrific unique history....for God's sake , save it while you can. In another 10 years it will be too late. These things will have rusted and the ability to keep them going will have been forgotten." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Aitken, Travel writer Buoyed by the enthusiastic tourist response to the Fairy Queen, the Indian railway authorities plan to repair many more vintage locomotives. Indian authorities say the move will give passengers being chugged along by the ancient machines, a journey back in time.
