Scottish Highland Games in Dunoon, Scotland (2017 Cowal Highland Gathering)

13:05
Come join us for the Scottish Highland Games in Dunoon, Scotland as we attend the Cowal Highland Gathering (also known as the Cowal Games) held annually on the final weekend in August. To attend the 2017 Highland Games we came all the way from Glasgow, Scotland where we rented a van and did a road trip to Dunoon. Arriving to Cowal Games early in the morning allowed us access to the pipe bands as they practicing and a chance to grab some Scottish food before it became really busy. We ended up devouring Haggis, Neeps and Tatties along with a Beef Stovie. It was perfect considering it was a wee bit chilly in the morning. Our host for the day was Alan Pettigrew who helped show around the facilities of the Cowal Highland Gathering and explained all of the events taking place for the day. One of the highlights was getting a chance to see all of the different trophies on display. The Cowal Games are the largest Highland Games in the World attracting over 3500 competitors and roughly 23,000+ spectators. The first Cowal Games was held in 1894 and it is an annual event. Additionally, the Cowal Highland Gathering hosts the World Highland Dancing Championship. In terms of games, the heavy events are one of the biggest categories including Caber toss, Stone put, Scottish hammer throw, Weight throw, Weight over the bar, Sheaf toss and Maide Leisg. We enjoyed taking in as many of the heavy events as possible but a personal highlight for us though was the piping bands and also the wrestling. If you have a chance to attend the Highland Games while in Scotland we would highly recommend it. We had been to the games once before in Canada, but now it was time to experience the real deal right where it all began, so after enjoying a few days in Glasgow, we hit the road. Our destination: the Cowal Highland Gathering in the town of Dunoon. Our journey took us out of Glasgow and then north along the shores of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. From there we continued along the shores of Loch Fyne and Loch Eck, before arriving at our destination in Dunoon and drove to our AirBnB, which was set in an old merchant’s manor right by the water. Next, it was time to enjoy some of the events. Bagpiping is an integral part of the Highland Games with both solo pipers and pipe bands competing, and we happened to be there on the day the Cowal Pipe Band Championship was taking place, so we had to check that out. We also watched some Highland dancing. The Cowal Highland Gathering was hosting the Scottish and World Highland Dancing Championships, so there were dancers from around the world competing that day. But now let’s meet the man who was showing us around the Cowal Highland Games. Hi my name is Alan Pettigrew. I've come down here for the Cowal Highland Gathering. The biggest and most prestigious games in the world. I'm here in Dunoon in Bonnie Scotland. And today there is going to be a fantastic day and we've been here doing these games for about a 120 years. Today in the heavy events we have 6 events to vie for this prestigious championship. We have the famous Cowal Stone which is 14.3 kilograms. We have the 16 pound shot. The 28 pound weight for distance. The 16 pound scott hammer. This is the original hammer which Scotland gave to the world of International athletics. A wooden shaft which then changed to a wire handle and used in the Olympics and World Championships all over the world. And after this event we have the 56 pound weight over the bar for height and then last but not least we have the famous till hall caber. We were both thrilled to be treated with much better weather on the drive back to Glasgow, so we made it a point to stop and enjoy the scenery. And that’s a wrap for our road trip to the Cowal Highland Gathering. We were only there to experience 1 day of the events, but we hope this video gave you a little taste of what Scotland’s Highland Games are all about. This is part of our Travel in Scotland video series showcasing Scottish food, Scottish culture and Scottish cuisine. Music by DJ Quads: https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads

Many travel all the way to Scotland to see the big clan gatherings and the famous Highland Games events. But twice, I've come upon small town games and they are so charming. Pipe Band Parade - Pitlochry Highland Games

08:39
For many the Pitlochry Highland Games starts with the parade of pipe bands down Atholl Road to the Recreation Ground - even although the local events are already well under way. The parade is led by Robert Wiseman Vale of Atholl pipe band. Here you can see the Grade 1 band with the Grade 3 and Novice Juvenile bands all playing together and led by three Drum Majors in full traditional regalia. Vale of Atholl pipe band is one of the local bands here, and it performs regularly during the summer in Pitlochry on Monday evenings. It is followed by Perth and District Pipe Band. All bands in the parade are judged on marching and smartness of turnout - with valuable prizes for the winners. This year's top prize was awarded to Beauly Firth & Glens. Second and third prizes went to Lomond and Clyde and Central Scotland Police respectively. This video manages to include all the bands talking part in the 2009 parade. Pibroch Highland Games Airth Scotland

01:18
Tour Scotland video of the Pibroch at the Highland Games on ancestry visit to Airth. Pibroch. Piob, Peeb, means Pipe; Piobaire, Peebair, means Piper; and Piobaireachd, Peeb-air-och with three syllables, means pipe playing pipe music. Many people simplify the pronunciation by saying Peebrock, probably from the spelling Pibroch which is seen in some Light music and songs. Though more accurately titled Ceol Mor, Cowal More, meaning Big, or Great, Music, the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe is commonly referred to as Piobaireachd. This is the music that summoned the clans to battle, celebrated sweet victory and terrible loss, commemorated murder and lamented the deaths of their chiefs and heroes.

Nowadays we do not need to bring authentic Scots for that because lots and lots of young Russians learned the traditional Scottish dances and even learned how to make traditional Scottish dresses and our club has a lot of members now." 16. Highland dancing 17. Young Russian girls practice Highland dancing 18. Festival meadow STORYLINE: Thousands of Muscovites came to the capital's Kolomenskoye Park on Sunday to watch the Festival of Scottish culture. The event is traditionally organised by the Moscow Caledonian Club. The club is popular among descendents of Scots in Russia and those simply interested in Scotland and its heritage. Several thousand Scots came to live in Russia in 18th century at the invitation of the Russian Tzar Peter the Great. In 1997 the club launched the first Russo-Scottish Folk Festival and Russia's maiden Highland Games. Both were a huge success and have become regular events ever since. The highlight of this year's festival was the Scottish Pipe show. The performance featured Merchiston Castle School Pipe Band from Edinburgh, Paul Chamberlain`s Ceilidh Band from Newcastle, Clann An Drumma historical show team from Glasgow, and the pipes and drums of the Royal Air Force from St. Andrews and Inverness. Afterwards many in the crowd were keen to test their skills in traditional Scottish sports such as weight throws and the hurling end-over-end of a tapered fir pole. While others preferred to kick up their heels with some traditional Highland dancing. GALLABRAE is a mash-up of two Gallic terms, meaning “ bold and daring” plus “beautiful highlands’. That’s us! The Saturday Scottish Games kept spinning off so many other events that we realized it was time for a re-branding to more accurately encompass what we have become; in addition, our regional and national profile (not to mention our growing reputation inScotland) is expanding greatly, and we have to race to keep up with it! Throwing The Weight Highland Games Newburgh Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland video of throwing the weight at the Highland Games at Robbie's Park, Scotland Terrace, Newburgh, on ancestry visit to Fife. It is believed that, like many Highland games events, the origin of the weight throw is tied to a prohibition by King Edward I of England against Scotsmen possessing weapons during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries

Rural Hill Scottish Festival In Huntersville NC

02:56
Modern Scottish Festivals have their roots in the middle ages. We have reports of athletic competition ("Games") at many times and places when people gathered together; fairs, military musters ("wapenschaws"), even funerals! Games which now feature track and field events, music, and dance have been held in the village of Ceres (in Fife) since shortly after the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Scottish Games as we know them today began to develop in 1781 when the Highland Society of Falkirk sponsored prize money and trophies for competitions in dancing, piping, and athletics during the town's Fall Fair. In 1818 a Games was presented in St. Fillan's with piping, athletics, and dancing (including the Sword Dance for the first time). Within a few years Gatherings were being held at many towns throughout Scotland. Many of these Gatherings are still being held today. The increasing popularity of these events eventually led to attempts to standardize the rules of competition and judging. Sanctioning bodies were formed to develop uniform rules and maintain records, Highland dancing, piping, and drumming teachers and judges stand for regular examinations to maintain their certification. With renewed interest in Scottish harp and fiddle their sanctioning organizations are seeing new growth. As Scots immigrated to far-flung lands they took their sport and culture with them. Tradition tells us that Games were held near Ellerbe, North Carolina in the late 1700s; most sources state that the first Games in the U.S. were presented by Scottish emigrants living in Boston in 1853. One source does state that the Boston Scots had been meeting for "traditional games" for several years before that. There is also a description of the "First Sportive Meet" of the Highland Society of New York in the Emigrant and Old Countryman of October 19, 1836 which gives some indication that regular competition took place during the first half of the 19th Century. By 1861 at least three other Caledonian Clubs had joined Boston -- New York, Philadelphia, and Newark, New Jersey. The Civil War delayed the spread of these events, but by 1875 Highland Games were being held in at least 125 communities across America. These "Caledonian Games" generally included competitions in dancing, music, and athletics; the athletics could include foot races, hurdle races, wrestling, pole-vaulting, high and long jump, hop, skip and jump, putting the heavy stone, throwing the hammer and the light and heavy weights and turning the caber. With the rise in intercollegiate athletics in the late 1800's participation at Scottish Games went into a decline. Many events folded; the ones that survived refocused on their cultural heritage and expanded to become Festivals. Games and Festivals offer competition focused on traditional Scottish athletic events, dance and music; they have expanded to include "fun" competitions, non-competitive tests of skill and strength, and historical re-enactments. The Scottish Games in the United States have grown because many people of Scottish descent still feel the pull of their ancestral homeland and heritage. The Games provide a connection to that heritage. For many, going to the Games is like going home to a family reunion.

Bagpipes Music Solo Female Pibroch Piper 2018 Highland Games Birnam Highland Perthshire Scotland

03:39
Tour Scotland travel video of a Scottish woman Piper playing Pibroch music at the piping competition at the Highland Games on ancestry visit to Birnam, Highland Perthshire.
