Olympic Games 2016 Rio | Highlights

08:44
More than 11,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees, including first time entrants Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Refugee Olympic Team, took part.[1][2] With 306 sets of medals, the games featured 28 Olympic sports, including rugby sevens and golf, which were added to the Olympic program in 2009. These sporting events took place at 33 venues in the host city, and at five in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília, and Manaus. These were the first Summer Olympic Games under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidency of Thomas Bach.[2] The host city Rio de Janeiro was announced at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009. Rio became the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These were the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held entirely in the host country's winter, the first since 1968 to be held in Latin America, and the first since 2000 to be held in the Southern Hemisphere.[3] The lead-up to these Games was marked by controversies, including the instability of Brazil's federal government; the country's economic crisis; health and safety concerns surrounding the Zika virus and significant pollution in the Guanabara Bay; and a doping scandal involving Russia, which affected the participation of its athletes in the Games. The United States topped the medal table for the fifth time in the past six Summer Olympics, winning the most golds (46) and most medals overall (121), as well as its 1,000th Olympic gold medal overall. Great Britain finished second and became the first country in the history of the modern Olympics to increase its tally of medals in the subsequent games after being the host nation. China finished third. Host country Brazil won seven gold medals, its most at any single Summer Olympics, finishing in thirteenth place. Bahrain, Fiji, Jordan, Kosovo, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Tajikistan, Ivory Coast and Vietnam each won their first gold medals, as did the group of Independent Olympic Athletes (from Kuwait).

Very early film of The Olympics - "Athens 1896"

Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI Although the title proclaims this to be Athens 1896, the first Olympic Games of the modern era, this film is almost certainly of the so-called Intercalated Games of 1906 - the event captured is the standing high jump, which did not feature in the 1896 Games. The interim competition was held at a time when Athens and the International Olympic Committee were at odds over the decision to hold the Games in different cities of the world. History of Summer Olympics // Rio 2016 Olympics The 2016 Summer Olympics (Portuguese: Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 2016), officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016, is a major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games due to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Record numbers of countries are participating in a record number of sports. More than 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan, are scheduled to take part.[1] With 306 sets of medals, the games will feature 28 Olympic sports — including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. These sporting events will take place at 33 venues in the host city and at 5 venues in the cities of São Paulo (Brazil's largest city), Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília (Brazil's capital), and Manaus. These will be the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach.[1] The host city of Rio de Janeiro was announced at the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009. Rio will become the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These will be the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held entirely during the host country's winter season (the 2000 games began on 15 September – five days before the Southern Hemisphere's vernal equinox), the first since 1968 to be held in Latin America, and the first since 2000 (and third overall) to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. The lead-up to these games have been marked by political controversies—including the corruption and instability of the country's federal government, as well as prominent health and safety concerns surrounding the Zika virus and significant pollution in the Guanabara Bay. rio 2016 olympics football rio 2016 olympics volunteer rio 2016 olympics jobs rio 2016 olympics schedule rio 2016 olympics sports rio 2016 olympics volleyball rio 2016 olympics sponsors rio 2016 olympics countdown rio 2016 tickets rio 2016 olympics rio 2016 mascot rio 2016 venues rio 2016 jobs rio 2016 font rio 2016 volunteer rio 2016 wiki rio 2016 tickets rio 2016 schedule of events rio 2016 schedule athletics rio 2016 sport schedule 2016 olympic competition schedule 2016 olympics daily schedule rio olympics schedule of events rio olympics daily schedule

Doodle designer Olivia Huynh created 4 drawings in an old fashion drawing style. Nice. "The practice of sport is a human right. It was the first international Olympic Games held in the Modern era. When are the olympic games held? Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Who were the first to establish the Olympic Games? In 1850 an Olympian Class was started by Dr. William Penny Brookes at Much Wenlock, in Shropshire, England. In 1859, Dr. Brookes changed the name to the Wenlock Olympian Games. This annual sports festival continues to this day. The Wenlock Olympian Society was founded by Dr. Brookes on 15 November 1860. Officially called the Games of the I Olympiad, the events took place inside the Panathenaic Stadium. The 1896 games included 9 different sports and 43 events. Most noteworthy was the marathon — it had the greatest number of international athletes ever. Equally noteworthy was its winner, Spyridon "Spyro" Louis, the only Greek champion in the athletics division, and a national hero for the host country. His monumental victory on that historic day continues to inspire Greek pride. Today's Doodle by Olivia Huynh shows 4 different scenes from the games; refresh the homepage to see them all. Summer Olympic Games Facts for Kids | Baby Bee Kids Channel Summer Olympic Games The Summer Olympic Games or the 'Games of the Olympiad' were first held in the modern era in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The Modern Olympic Games are based on the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. Held every four years, in honor of the Greek God Zeus, records show the Ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BC in Olympia and weren't halted until 394 AD. The prize for event winners in the Ancient Olympics was an olive branch wreath. Since the 1904 Olympics, medals are awarded in each event, with gold medals for first place, silver for second and bronze for third. Competitors qualify for individual sports in the Olympics by placing in a major international event or by achieving a sufficient qualifying time in sanctioned meets. There are a limited number of positions for each nation in each Olympic event. Nations qualify for team sports via continental qualifying tournaments. Greece, Australia, France, Great Britain and Switzerland are the only countries to have had representatives at every Summer Olympic Games. As of 2012, the USA has won more Gold (976), more Silver (758), more Bronze (666) and more total medals (2400) than any other nation at the Summer games. Great Britain is the only country to have one at least 1 gold medal at every Summer Olympics. The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics more times than any other nation, four in total, St Louis 1904, Los Angeles 1932 & 1984, and Atlanta 1996. London, United Kingdom, hosted the Summer Olympics in 1908, 1948, and 2012, making London the only city to host the event on three occasions. Due to the two World Wars there were no Olympic Games in 1916, 1940 or 1944. The 1956 Olympics, were held in Melbourne, Australia, the first time the games had been held in the Southern Hemisphere. Apart from the equestrian events that is, which had to be held 5 months earlier in Stockholm, Sweden, as Australian quarantine had restricted entry due to foot-and-mouth disease in the UK at the time. After the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow were boycotted by 66 nations, including the United States and Canada. The last few Olympics have seen a record number of nearly 11,000 people, from a record number of 204 countries, competing in a record number of 28 sports and 41 disciplines over a record 302 events. The 5 rings of the Olympic flag represent Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas, they are linked together in friendship. Every national flag of the world has at least one of the rings colors, blue, black, green, yellow, and red. The Olympic flame is lit at Olympia in Greece every two years (Summer and Winter Olympics) before it journeys to the next host nation where it is paraded around until the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremony. Tug of war was contested as a team event at every Summer Olympics from 1900 to 1920. #Facts #ForKids #BabyBeeKidsChannel

Olympic Games From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the modern games in general. For the ongoing games in Rio, see 2016 Summer Olympics. For the ancient Greek games, see Ancient Olympic Games. For the 1927 Our Gang short, see Olympic Games (film). For the covert campaign, see Operation Olympic Games. "Olympics" redirects here. The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating.[3] The Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating by occurring every four years but two years apart. Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority. The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Olympic Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes. The IOC has had to adapt to a variety of economic, political, and technological advancements. As a result, the Olympics has shifted away from pure amateurism, as envisioned by Coubertin, to allowing participation of professional athletes. The growing importance of mass media created the issue of corporate sponsorship and commercialization of the Games. World wars led to the cancellation of the 1916, 1940, and 1944 Games. Large boycotts during the Cold War limited participation in the 1980 and 1984 Games. The Olympic Movement consists of international sports federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and organizing committees for each specific Olympic Games. As the decision-making body, the IOC is responsible for choosing the host city for each Games, and organizes and funds the Games according to the Olympic Charter. The IOC also determines the Olympic program, consisting of the sports to be contested at the Games. There are several Olympic rituals and symbols, such as the Olympic flag and torch, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. Over 13,000 athletes compete at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games in 33 different sports and nearly 400 events. The first, second, and third-place finishers in each event receive Olympic medals: gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. The Games have grown so much that nearly every nation is now represented. This growth has created numerous challenges and controversies, including boycotts, doping, bribery, and a terrorist attack in 1972. Every two years the Olympics and its media exposure provide unknown athletes with the chance to attain national and sometimes international fame. The Games also constitute an opportunity for the host city and country to showcase themselves to the world.

1906 Athens Olympics - Opening Ceremony

06:08
Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI This early film offers a snapshot of what became known as the Interim (or Intercalated) Games of 1906. Having hosted the first modern Games in 1896, Athens felt that it should be the permanent venue, but the International Olympic Committee disagreed, wanting the event held in different cities around the world. The compromise was this separate event, to be held in Athens between the official Games every four years. Not recognised in Olympic records, the 1906 games nevertheless introduced some key elements of Olympic ritual, such as the march past of the teams in the opening ceremony. The parade can be seen here after the arrival of royalty, including King Edward VII, and other dignitaries. Despite their success, the Interim Games were never held again. 6th April 1896: The First Modern Olympic Games

02:17
http://www.historypod.net Known as the father of the modern Olympics, Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin had organised a congress two years earlier in which the host city was chosen and the International Olympic Committee founded. American James Connolly won the first final for his 13.71m triple jump, leading the USA’s 14 competitors to win a total of 11 events between them. The most successful individual competitor was the German Carl Schuhmann who won the team events in the horizontal bar and parallel bars events, the horse vault event and – despite being considerably smaller than his opponents – the wrestling competition. He didn’t receive any gold medals, however. Winners at the 1896 Olympics were instead presented with a silver medal, an olive branch, and a diploma. It wasn’t until 1904 that the tradition of awarding gold, silver and bronze medals to first, second and third place began. The 1896 Summer Olympics did, however, lay down many traditions – not least of which was the first competitive marathon race. A Greek water carrier called Spyridon Louis won the race in a time of 2 hours 58 minutes and 50 seconds. The same route, finishing at the stadium used in the 1896 games, was used when the Olympics returned to Greece in 2004. The winner finished almost 45 minutes faster than in the 1896 competition. By the time of the 2004 games, however, the rope climbing competition that saw competitors climbing a 14m rope in 1896 had been removed.
