How to Balance Heating System Radiators - Plumbing Tips

For more information visit our website at http://www.plumberparts.co.uk Today I'm going to tell you about balancing heating systems, why you should do it, the symptoms that mean you might have to do it, and how to do it. Firstly let's have a look at the general layout of a heating system. We'll have a look at it schematically because that will help you understand why balancing a heating system is so important. Let's say we have two storeys; Level 1 and gound with the boiler at the bottom. Coming out of the boiler we have a pump that goes up, through a diverter valve, through some radiators upstairs and then downstairs with common returns going back to the boiler. OK? So you've got radiators here. The first reason that a heating system should be balanced is even if there's a pump on a heating system hot water naturally likes to gravitate up and stay upstairs and then make it's quick route back to the boiler. So what you often find is the radiators upstairs are getting loads of heat and the ones downstairs are still really quite cool so what you should do is go to the lockshields on the radiators upstairs close them, then open them at about a quarter of a turn. You won't notice any difference in the radiator's heat capacity or not but you will notice that more hot water flow is diverted to the radiators downstairs. Now, you go downstairs, make sure that the radiators are open and that means the heating system should be balanced. Another reason you should balance a heating system is, say, this radiator is getting hot, that one's getting hot, and this one's getting hot, the last radiator on the line isn't getting so hot and that's because these radiators are effectively pinching the hot water flow delivered by the boiler and the pump. What you do then is remove the lockshields on these radiators here strangle those two up there down, shut them, give them a quarter of a turn. This one here bring that down, ok, and shut them and give them a quarter of a turn. We also do a video on why one radiator isn't getting hot, 'cos it can be more than one reason, not just the fact that the heating system isn't balanced. Now that is a brief idea of how you balance a system and why. Now let's take a quick look at the lockshield how to shut it and also to give it a quarter turn nip to make sure that it is all balanced. So here we are, upstairs, ok. Now the radiators up here get really hot so let's have a look at how we're going to strangle this one down and balance this system. So here we are with our first upstairs radiator. There's four on this system upstairs and do the same thing to each one. Here's the lockshield end, not the TRV end. Pop the lockshield cap off and close it by turning it anti clockwise Once it's fully closed just slack it back a quarter of a turn. Do that to each radiator upstairs and you should find then that the radiator side of the heating system is balanced. Now let's look at what we can do to balance out the hot water coil on your heating cylinder if you have an indirect one. Right, so we've had a look at how to balance the radiators on the heating system. Now we're going to have a look at how to balance the hot water coil on the indirect cylinder. Alot of houses in the UK have indirect hot water coils on the cylinder. That means that hot water from the boiler is passed through a coil in the cylinder and that heats the water up. Now often these coils are 22mm in pipe size and when the valve opens up to let hot water through that coil, it pinches loads of heat from the radiators. Therefore the indirect hot water coil should also be balanced and regulated. Most plumbers installing an indirect hot water cylinder will put a flow regulating valve on the return side of the coil Let's have a look at it. So, you have your boiler, your pump and your 3-port valve, or if you've got an s-plan it will just be a 2-port valve for each side. You have all your radiators with their flows and returns. We have the flow coming up here from the boiler, goes through the valve into our hot water coil, in our cylinder and back out. It is here where we fit our flow regulating valve, on the return side of the hot water coil. That will go back into the return side of the boiler. So, to recap, we have the boiler, the pump, and our diverter valves. The radiators upstairs have been strangled down and regulated and the ones downstairs are getting a good flow of hot water. We've also strangled down the return on the indirect hot water cylinder and the whole heating system now is working properly. Remember! Balancing a heating system out all you have to do is give each component in the heating system an equal amount of flow

The steam generator or boiler is an integral component of a steam engine when considered as a prime mover. However it needs be treated separately, as to some extent a variety of generator types can be combined with a variety of engine units. A boiler incorporates a firebox or furnace in order to burn the fuel and generate heat. The generated heat is transferred to water to make steam, the process of boiling. This produces saturated steam at a rate which can vary according to the pressure above the boiling water. The higher the furnace temperature, the faster the steam production. The saturated steam thus produced can then either be used immediately to produce power via a turbine and alternator, or else may be further superheated to a higher temperature; this notably reduces suspended water content making a given volume of steam produce more work and creates a greater temperature gradient, which helps reduce the potential to form condensation. Any remaining heat in the combustion gases can then either be evacuated or made to pass through an economiser, the role of which is to warm the feed water before it reaches the boiler...

READ IMPORTANT UPDATE BELOW: I built a solar water heating system. In this video I show you how I built the water heating solar panels. My current system of twenty panels have the capability to collect 500,000 BTU per sunny day. typically I collect about 300,000 BTU, Still that is enough to easily heat our house for a day The panels cost about $450 to $500 each to build. Still that is much cheeper than buying them off the open market. UPDATE: The second set of solar panels has been plagued with leaks. The joints between the header and the 1/4 I/D tubing keeps springing leaks. I do not know why this set keeps leaking, and the first set (after three years of use), has not. For a DESIGN IMPROVEMENT I now wrap rings of 8 or 10 guage copper house wire around the joints before soldering. This holds a fillet of solder at each of the joints and dramatically decreases the leakage opportunity. I plan to make a video of this improvment when I get time.

As an example, Gerald shows us a dryback boiler by Victory Energy that is engineered to optimize water circulation, promote heat transfer, and engineered for long-term performance and reduced maintenance. Using a dryback boiler, you can use up to 10% less fuel. Wetback boiler designs have a water gap between the furnace and back wall, and all of the heat is generated directly into water. Maxi Therm steam heat exchangers

The Maxi-Therm system is a new, patented form of instantaneous steam to water heater. Conventional piping components are utilized in every critical valve or pump. A facility can even specify pumps and valves for which they already stock parts. Energy conservation is unparalleled. There is no unit on the market more energy efficient than a Maxi-Therm for steam to water heating. It squeezes every practical BTU out of the steam and condensate. Normally when a system is energy efficient, it’s not the lowest cost to install. The Maxi-Therm is different. It does not require a pressure reducing valve station, or a dedicated condensate pump. This can save up to 40% of the installed cost on a new job. To explain how the dramatic energy conservation and cost savings are possible, let’s start at the beginning, with water… Steam fundamentals When make-up water enters the boiler room or power plant, its first stop after treatment is the deaerator. Here it is sprayed over heated trays to drive out dissolved gases. The water is usually heated from 40F to 205F by adding sensible heat. It takes about 1 BTU to raise a pound (or pint) of water by 1F. These BTU’s are supplied by steam in the trays. Smaller package boilers might not utilize a deaerator, in which case, the boiler provides this same sensible heat demand.Image1 Here is one place where the Maxi-Therm system makes a difference. Why is make-up water needed in the first place? Some losses are due to boiler blow-down and some to make up for leaks. The other loss is from “flash steam”. That’s the steam puffing out of vent pipes all around the condensate return system. The steam boiler takes water from the deaerator, heats it to the boiling point by adding more sensible heat, and then adds latent heat to vaporize the water into steam. How much sensible and latent heat are needed? That depends on the steam pressure desired. A sophisticated system for a university, food processor, or chemical plant will generate steam at 600 psig or higher, because steam is used to generate power before distribution. The steam is normally distributed at 100 or 150 psig. Some industrial plants (usually with turbine drives) will distribute steam up to 600 psig. Systems are designed around higher pressure distribution because of the steam volume. High pressure distribution is used to minimize pipe sizes, and reduce the drop in pressure experienced by flowing steam. Intermediate pressure steam is normally 60 or 80 psig. It is used for sterilizers, autoclaves, wash mixers, and pumping stations. This steam is usually generated from distribution pressure by a pressure reducing station. Low pressure steam is normally 10 to 15 psig. It is used for heating air and water. The water heating systems are either “service” or “domestic”. Domestic water is for the hot side of sinks and showers. Service water is first heated by the steam, then it circulates through coils and baseboard to heat air. It’s usually mixed with glycol to avoid freezing. Between service and domestic, most facilities use at least 50% of their steam for heating water. Condensate system pressure is normally 0 psig. Industrial process dryers sometimes use intermediate 30 to 60 psig return systems, which then “cascade” down into a 0 psig system.

Mount a plywood panel to the basement wall to serve as a mounting panel for the new combination boiler. 2. Run new gas, electrical, and plumbing lines to the plywood panel. 3. Screw the metal mounting brackets to the plywood panel, then hang the combination heater onto the brackets. 4. Drill two 4-inch-diameter holes through the house wall for the exhaust vent and air intake vent. Be sure the air intake is above the snow line, and that the exhaust vent is 12 inches from a window and 12 inches from the air intake. 5. Use PVC pipe and fittings to create the exhaust and air intake vents. Run the piping from the boiler through the exterior wall. 6. Connect hot- and cold-water lines to the combination boiler to deliver water to the heating system and the domestic water fixtures. 7. Connect the gas line and new electrical cable to the combination boiler. 8. Mount an outdoor temperature sensor onto the north side of the house to help regulate the production of hot water. 9. Run a PVC condensate line with limestone neutralizer from the combination heater to a nearby utility sink drain or floor drain. Use a condensate pump to drain away the excess condensation. 10. Turn on the combination boiler, and it should immediately start making hot water. 11. Remove and discard the old boiler and water heater. Work done by "others". Valves left in the off position so it didn't work correctly on start-up. Trap changed out for no reason (we had rebuilt it previously). Check valve not level. Other bad traps passing steam into poorly designed and installed condenate line. High pressure and low pressure traps dumping into same return, causing water hammer and leaks. "No money" in budget to fix problems.
