Listening Activities Tips

04:10
There are four suggestions -- three involve pre-listening activities and the fourth is a post-listening activity. These highlight four of what I consider to be the most important teaching points in listening. Before students listen make them aware of the topic and relevant speaker information such as age or accents. Give them a purpose for their listening and make sure they have a clear understanding of it before you play the audio. Pre-teach idioms or cultural references that learners will need to know for complete comprehension. And, let students discuss and troubleshoot their listening experiences.

Listening Activities for Low Level Classes - Sneak Peek

02:12
Teaching low level students is very challenging because these students have a very limited amount of language knowledge to draw upon in order to complete even the most basic of language learning tasks. When teaching listening to low level students, we have to keep two main strategies in mind. The first is to make sure that we use every opportunity in the class to provide students with exposure to the language. The more English they hear and see, the more familiar they will become with it. The second strategy is to give students ways to demonstrate understanding of what they have heard that do not require them to produce a lot of original language. Students rapidly gain confidence if they are able to successfully complete tasks. We can make students successful with listening tasks by taking away the pressure of language production. In this session, we will take a look at these two strategies in more depth. Course Agenda: 1. The Importance of Classroom Management Language 2. *ESL Activities**Classroom Activities* - Land mine

01:55
http://sharpenthatpencil.com During this activity the students must communicate with each other to successfully cross the land mine as a team. All communication must be in English. This is a great listening and speaking focused ESL Activity. It requires a few minutes of preparation time to set up prior to class. All you need for this activity is either tape or chalk, and a piece of paper and pen for the teacher. Make a grid on the ground with either chalk or tape, include the Letters and numbers shown in the illustration. The boxes should be large enough that one student can put both his feet into the box. Some floors in the classrooms already have square tiles. Use those as your grid. Make a master copy of your grid on paper, including land mines. The students will not be able to see your master sheet. They should not know where the land mines are. So what are land mines? Land mines are the red boxes indicated on your master sheet. If a student stands on a land mine, he is out. Now HOW TO PLAY Divide your students into two groups. One team will be A and one will be B. The objective of this activity is to get the majority of your group across to the other side of the grid, for example, from point A to point B. The group with the most members across wins. The challenge is that there are land mines scattered all over the grid and if a student stands on the land mine he is out. Another challenge is that the second group is trying to cross the land mine in the opposite direction, for example, from point B to point A. The students cannot see where the land mines are. Only one student, per team, can move at a time. Students can only move horizontally or vertically, not diagonally. Students can move forward and backward. Multiple players can be on the grid at one time but NOT on the same square. Students have to figure out how to get their entire team across to the other side therefore give your students a few minutes to brain storm before starting the activity. Please comment and let me know what you think of this activity.

New Year's Day song for children - English Language Games

Do you recognize the tune? If you do, then write it in the comments box! Please let me know if you sang this song with your kids! Subscribe to this channel and join in on the adventure of 365 days of English Language Games! http://www.youtube.com/englishlanguagegames Here are the lyrics: New Year's Day, New Year's Day January 1st (first) Time to start a brand new year on January 1st (first)" And join in on the conversation... I would LOVE to know when and how you use these songs/games/activities with your kids and please share your variations and other ideas! Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/englishlanguagegames Twitter: http://www.twitter/ESLchildren Website: http://www.EnglishLanguageGames.ORG Are you an ESL teacher looking for some fun English language games to use in your ESL beginners class? I was too a few years ago and I was all on my own so I started creating English teaching materials that would make learning English FUN and exciting My mission is that these English language games will spark participation and ignite learning in your ESL beginners class. My goal is to give you some English teaching materials that will make it easy for you to teach ESL children and make it FUN for the kids to learn English! I've been teaching an ESL beginners class to kids in Honduras for the past 3 years. Most ESL children's classes have between 4 to 20 kids... well I threw myself in a classroom of 30 to 40 "untamed" pre-school and kindergarden kids! (just to prove my sanity... I even volunteered!!) With no curriculum, no lesson plans, no previous experience and no guidance, I was on my own diving into this fun adventure called teaching English as a Second Language! I started to search online to get some ideas and I soon discovered that there wasn't much available that would keep these kids engaged, encourage them to participate in class and overall really "learn" English. So I started creating English language games and other English teaching materials that would engage my kids, accelerate their learning and really make learning English FUN for them! The best part is that during this "adventure of mine", I discovered that this was truly one of my life's passions... so now I'm setting out to share my JOY with the world! I hope these ESL exercises will be valuable to you and all the beautiful children you are blessed to teach! ... keep PLAYING and LEARNING! So I'm setting out to share my JOY with the world and I hope these English teaching materials and other ideas I share will help bring more JOY and FUN to your ESL beginners class or other kids you LOVE!

EFL / ESL Teaching Tip: Bottom Up Listening Activities

03:58
James tells us how to improve our students' listening skills with these interesting and fun bottom up activities! Hi. I’m James and I’m the Head of Teacher Training at Rennert International, and today I’d like to share some practice activities that you can do with your students that focus on developing their bottom up listening skills. So listening to specific sounds or particular intonation patterns. And a simple activity that you can do focusing on making distinctions between similar vowel sounds is to read 3 words; two words that are the same and one that is similar but with a different vowel sound and have the students identify which was different- A, B, or C. So for example if I say “made, made, mad,” they would say , “Oh, C was different.” Or if I said see, see, say, they would say, “Oh, the third one was different.” Or if I say read, read, read, they would say that the second one or B was different. A variation on this is if you give the students two words that sound, again just have one vowel sound that’s different and you say a word and they have to identify which it is, so for example if you write on the board or on their notebook, “Note, not” and then if I say “note,” they have to circle the word that they hear. An extension of this is to put it in a sentence, so for example you could say, have again have the two sentences, “What does made mean? What does mad mean?” and then I say,“ What does made mean?” and the students have to say, “Oh, that was the first sentence that’s written down.” And then an extension on that is to have the students start to practice pronunciation as well as their listening. So for example, you would have the sentence, “What does made mean?” and then a possible answer, “The past of make,” and “What does mad mean?” “Angry.” And then the students have to read one of those sentences, and then their partner has to answer appropriately. So, if for example I’m working with you and I say “What does mad mean?” you would say, “Angry.” But, if you said “The past of make,” then I know that either I haven’t said it clearly or you haven’t heard it clearly. Another practice activity is focusing on identifying vowel reductions. So you would have two words, like for example “atom and atomic” and the students have to identify where the schwa is in each of those words. So it’s pronunciation, but it’s also focusing on their listening skills when you, cause you say the words and they can hear which are the reduced vowels. And then finally and activity focusing on identifying through listening contrast is stress. So you have a sentence for example, “Were you in the bank on Friday?” and then different answers like, “No, I was there on Saturday” or “No, I worked on Friday,” and you have one word in italics or bold and you say that word with the stress and then the students have to work out what the meaning is based on the stress. So for example, if I say “Were you in the bank on FRIDAY?” then they would say, “No, I was there on Saturday.” Or were you in the BANK on Friday?” “No, I worked on Friday” or “I was in the supermarket on Friday.” So they’re having to notice when, through listening, when they’re hearing the word with the stress to contrast. So again I hope you’re finding these practice activities helpful. They’re often used for pronunciation practice, but pronunciation and listening are really, really closely linked and if they’re able to hear the differences, then “A” it’s improving their listening comprehension but “B” it will ultimately help improve their pronunciation as well. So good luck. Thanks.

Dominique Parker & LISTEN UP! - Listening Activities for Adult Classes There are four basic language skills we need to master in order to be able to communicate effectively; Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening. This presentation will focus on how to hone our students' listening skills. There is more to setting up listening activities than pressing play on the CD player. In this presentation we will look at the importance of preparing our students to succeed at listening tasks through pre-teaching. We will also present a variety of activities that can be used to spice up and expand upon textbook listening exercises.
