Why Hosting The Olympics Isn't Worth It Anymore

05:28
It's no secret that it's a pricey pain to host the Olympic Games, running billions of dollars above the estimated budget. As the International Olympic Committee receives fewer bids with each problematic games, the future of the tradition is looking unsure. We spoke with Smith College Professor of Economics Andrew Zimbalist on the matter. He should know, he's written about the Olympic issues in Circus Maximus, No Boston Olympics, and Rio 2016. -------------------------------------------------- Follow Business Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. Five Cities That Got F*cked by Hosting the Olympics

03:56
Every four years with the Olympics, municipalities compete to host the winter and summer games and virtually always plunge their cities and sometimes even their home countries into massive debt and insolvency. _____ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. _____ Why? Because host cities inevitably spend double or more over initial estimates, fewer people show up than expected, and the International Olympic Committee, or IOC, takes bigger and bigger cuts of TV and other revenue streams. Sports economist Andrew Zimbalist says that a typical Summer Olympics generates up to $6 billion in revenue, at least half of which goes to the IOC. Winter Games generate even less money despite often being more expensive to host than Summer Games. Cities routinely claim that whatever money they spend on new facilities will stimulate the local economy for decades to come. With the recent announcement that Paris will host the 2024 Summer Games and Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Games, here are five cities that got fucked by hosting the Olympics. Athens, Greece, 2004. Athens is the birthplace of the ancient games that inspired today's modern municipal money pits. Its 2004, Games cost $16 billion, or 10 times the original estimate. By 2010, more than half the venues built for the event were underused, completely empty, or literally falling apart. Sochi, Russia, 2014. At $50 billion, the Sochi Winter Games cost more than all previous Winter Olympics combined, paid for by a dwindling supply of Russian petro dollars and gold bullion. Boris Nemtsov documented that $21 billion went to "embezzlement and kickbacks" for businessmen friends of Vladimir Putin. Nemtsov was later assassinated. Rio de Janiero, Brazil, 2016. Plagued by low ticket sales partly due to the outbreak of the Zika virus, the Rio games ended up costing $20 billion rather than the $13 billion backers claimed. The Olympics were hosted on the heels of the 2014 World Cup, which also cost a ton of loot, and the showplace Maracana stadium, which got a $500 million makeover, was "largely abandoned" soon after the games and had thousands of seats ripped out by vandals. Beijing, China, 2008. The Beijing Games cost $42 billion, a record at the time, even though Amnesty International charged that the Chinese government used forced labor to build many of the venues. The IOC didn't mind the stratospheric costs or crackdowns on dissent, though: It awarded Beijing the 2022 Winter Games. Montreal, Canada, 1976. The mayor of Montreal declared that the Olympics "can no more have a deficit than a man can have a baby." Unfortunately, it took Montreal 30 years to pay off its debt just for the main stadium built for the 1976 Summer Games. If there's good news here, it's that cities seem to be wising up: Paris and Los Angeles were the only two cities to bid on the 2024 Olympic Games and IOC was so anxious that there wouldn't be enough applications for 2028, that it pre-emptively awarded it to LA. But just like with professional sports teams that extort tax dollars and subsidies for stadiums that never pay back their inflated costs, it's likely the Olympics will keep finding new suckers for one of the oldest scams in sports. 1968 Summer Olympics, Black Power Salute

04:34
An Inspiring Act of Bravery. Willing to sacrifice ALL for justice. Tommie Smith, Dr. John Carlos & Peter Norman. "We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference." --Nelson Mandela Follow us @ https://www.facebook.com/iloveancestry https://twitter.com/LovingAncestry http://iloveancestry.tumblr.com http://pinterest.com/iloveancestry It was expected that Americans would dominate the track at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Indeed, when the men's 200-meter began, American Tommie Smith led the pack, sprinting ahead to take gold. Heading into the home stretch, it looked as if teammate and world-record holder John Carlos would win silver, but Australian Peter Norman edged him out, bounding down the straightaway to take silver and leaving Carlos with bronze. But it's what happened next that would make history. Smith and Carlos stood on the podium wearing black socks without shoes to symbolize black poverty in the U.S. Carlos wore a strand of colorful beads to protest lynching. They bowed their heads as The Star Spangled Banner played, and raised their fists — clad in black leather gloves — in salutes to Black Power and unity. It was a gesture seen around the world, and an enduring symbol of political resistance. Winning the 200 meter, John Carlos accepted the Bronze medal at the Olympic podium wearing black socks and no shoes to represent impoverished people who had no shoes of their own, and raised a black-gloved fist crowning a bowed head to humbly reflect the strength of the human spirit. Headlines were made around the globe and the photograph of the three medalists standing peaceably in protest at the ceremonial podium instantaneously became a historical symbol of the fight for human rights. "We owe it to our Ancestors and to the sacrifices that they made, to continue to achieve higher goals, while maintaining our identity. Stand Up! Stand OUT!" This fleeting moment, though, came out of the deep-rooted struggle for racial equality gripping America. Smith and Carlos had been part of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which, founded in 1967, had originally called upon black athletes to boycott the Summer Games. The movement's mission statement asked, "Why should we run in Mexico only to crawl home?" Ultimately the group decided against the boycott, but Smith and Carlos embodied their message of protest. Australian Peter Norman wore an OPHR patch on his jacket during the ceremony as a symbol of solidarity. "I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." --Nelson Mandela In a 2008 op-ed for the L.A. Times, basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who had been asked to try out for the '68 Olympic basketball team, described what watching that moment meant. "Whites were outraged, blacks felt some rush of pride," he wrote. Carlos, who would go on to equal the world record in the 100-meter, win an NCAA championship title and even play a short stint in the NFL, spoke in Chicago this year. Speaking to an audience of young poets and activists, he said that now, when asked by photographers to raise his fist for the camera, he instead instructs them to find a young person to photograph. "Let some young man or woman raise their fist," he said. "I want them to see that we've moved on to the next generation." DR. JOHN CARLOS FACEBOOK FAN PAGE http://ow.ly/lqWDl

Russia is holding an olympic games… FOR TANKS. The Tank Biathlon is similar to a regular biathlon where skiers race cross country to shoot at targets… only with XYZ tonne battle tanks Teams race around a 10km circuit littered with huge obstacles like slopes and pools, stopping along the way to fire rounds at targets nearly 2km away. Crews that miss a target must complete a 500 metre penalty lap. The first tank that crosses the line is the winner. Some 400 inmates in San Pedro prison, on the outskirts of Lima, are holding their own Olympic games from Tuesday. Soccer, boxing, and baseball are the games expected to attract the most attention, but there are also individual games like chess, table tennis and athletics. A sound body makes a sound mind. SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Chicoma, Prisoner Spokesman Each wing of the prison has its own representatives and they compete against each other. The director of the prison can only see advantages in their Olympics. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) It's a recreational sports activity that helps us entertain the prisoners while they participate in the competition. The prisoners do their best to be outstanding and take the prize to their prison wing. SUPER CAPTION: Col. The Olympics Are A Terrible Investment For The Host City — Here's Why

02:19
The Olympics are a terrible investment and a huge risk for the host city. Following is a transcript of the video. Cities pay billions of dollars to host the Olympics. But is it worth it? Rio estimated the 2016 Olympics would cost $3 billion. Instead, the final cost was closer to $13 billion. The city had to cut healthcare and police spending to afford it. This is what the venues look like just 1 year later. Host cities hope the increased tourism will be worth it and that the new venues will be used long after the games. However, the costs frequently go over estimates. Russia estimated the Sochi games would cost $12 billion. Instead, the final cost was around $50 billion. Many oligarchs contributed money to cover the buildout. Russia wound up making just $53 million on the endeavor. China spent over $40 billion on the 2008 Olympics. While they made a $146 million profit, this is what the stadiums look like today. To help pay for the 2006 Turin Olympics, the Italian government launched a scratch-off lottery game. Ultimately, the city lost $3.2 million hosting the Olympics. Today, its Olympic Village is used to house refugees. The 2004 Olympics cost Greece around $11 billion. Many of the stadiums are in disrepair today. With runaway budgets and stadiums that may never be used again, the Olympics continue to be a big risk for any city to host. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. Here we shall trace the origin of this Games and reveal some interesting anecdotes about it. The origin of the games dates back to 8th century B.C and was conducted in honour of the Greek God Zeus. Basically it was a religious festival and held at Olympia. The athletes who participated were all males and came from every corner of the Greek empire. The sanctuary as it was called was named Mt. Olympos the highest mountain in Greece and also because it was considered the home of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The first race to be held was in 776B.C called the stadion race. It was a foot race 600ft long. Some sources say this was the only athletic event held for a long time. The Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost 12 centuries. The first modern day Olympics was held in Athens in the year1896 almost 1503 years after it was started.Baron Pierre de Courbetin a Frenchman is given the credit for having restarted the games in the modern era. Delegates from 34 countries participated in the preliminary meeting to restart the games and though Courbetin wanted to hold it in Paris his homeland the delegates convinced him to move it to Athens. The idea of the Olympic flame had its birth in the games at Amsterdam in 1928 but the modern torch relay was inaugurated in Berlin in1936, The Olympic oath was instituted in 1920. Initially the ancient games was a five day programme and today it is a fortnightly e vent. The idea of holding the Winter Olympics came to the fray in1924 and from 1994 it was decided to alternate the summer and winter games. The Olympic flag was instituted in 1908 using the primary colours which would be found in every country’s flag. The five rings represent the continents and their unity. The motto Citius ,Altius Fortius Meaning Faster, Higher and Stronger have motivated athletes and sportsmen and women all over the world to achieve new landmarks in their fields of specialization. In addition to this the Olympics have added a nother feather to their cap by introducing the Paralympics Olympics. The entire event is of such a magnificent nature that organizing it is no easy task. This is done by the International Olympic association with representatives from all countries. This association is the parent body with the countries associations affiliated to it. They exercise immense influence and are well financed and equipped to handle this event. What started as a religious event has turned out to be a popular event viewed with great enthusiasm. A country’s sporting prowess is determined by the medals tally in the games. #theopenbook #Education #Educationalvideos #Studyiq #learn #Cbse #icse #ssc #generalknowledge

Tokyo 2020: Japan earthquake and nuclear disaster site could host Olympic events

02:14
Tokyo 2020: Japan earthquake and nuclear disaster site could host Olympic events Tokyo 2020 Olympic events could be held in part of Japan hit by the 2011 Fukushima earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in a bid to cut costs. Rowing canoe/kayak sprint events and baseball/softball are among sports that could be moved 400km north of Tokyo. The International Olympic Committee is holding talks with organisers after a review showed costs could exceed £23bn ($28bn) - four times the estimate. But IOC president Thomas Bach said "we have to respect" athletes. "The athletes are the heart and soul of the Olympic Games," Bach emphasised. The IOC began four-party discussions with the city government, Tokyo organisers and Japan's central government on Tuesday in a bid to reduce spending on the Games. The proposal to move some sports to the north-eastern area of Japan devastated by the earthquake was made in a review of expenses commissioned by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. The review recommends moving some sports from planned new venues to existing ones. Several events have already been moved outside of Tokyo, with cycling now due to take place 200km from the village in the Shizuoka district. Bach said he was confident cost reductions could be made, but suggested Tokyo should try to stay close to its original bid proposal of keeping the majority of venues within 8km of the athlete's village in the city's downtown. He said moving events to the earthquake-hit area was one of several cost-cutting options being discussed, and that it could "contribute to the regeneration" of the region. The most expensive Games to date are the London Games at £12bn and the Sochi 2014 Winter Games in Russia which cost £17.7bn. The Rio Olympic Games cost £9.7bn, coming in 51% over budget despite cuts to ceremonies, venues and staff. According to a recent study, no Games since 1960 has come in under budget. http://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/37703005 Bach: Events could be held in northeast Japan The head of the International Olympic Committee has suggested holding some events of the 2020 Tokyo Games in areas of northeastern Japan that were devastated by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. IOC President Thomas Bach, now visiting Japan, met Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Wednesday. Bach told Abe the IOC is thinking of holding some Olympic events in the disaster zone to contribute to revival efforts. He said this could show the world how the areas have recovered. Abe welcomed the idea. Abe also promised the government's participation in talks to cut costs for the games. Bach had proposed 4-way talks by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the IOC, Tokyo 2020 organizers and Japan's government. Reporters later asked Bach if baseball and softball will be held in Fukushima City. Bach said it's an option under consideration. He added that since the sports are very popular in Japan, having the country's team play in the disaster zone would send a strong message. http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20161019_29/
IOC tells PyeongChang it can hold some 2018 Olympic events in other cities if it

02:05
And we start with news that PyeongChang... the host city for the 2018 Winter Olympics is going to be offered the opportunity to share some of the burden of holding the global sporting event with other cities outside of Korea. The final decision will rest with PyeongChang′s organizing committee. The International Olympic Committee′s move is part of reforms aimed at cutting the costs for host cities. Song Ji-sun reports. It took PyeongChang three attempts to win the rights to host the Winter Olympics... but when the flame is lit... and the Games get underway... in February 2018... some of the events could be taking place elsewhere. The International Olympic Committee has offered the PyeongChang Organizing Committee the chance to host some of the events in other countries. The decision will be PyeongChang′s to make though. The IOC′s coordination commissioner Gunilla Lindberg told AP that PyeongChang gets the final say on whether the Games stay within the city or whether it takes the opportunity to host some events elsewhere. These proposals are part of IOC President Thomas Bach′s package of reforms dubbed ′Agenda 2020.′ The agenda is part of the IOC′s bid to change the Olympic Games to better adapt in the changing world, for financial and sustainability reasons. According to the IOC, hosting sledding events in pre-existing venues would save PyeongChang 120 million U.S. dollars in construction costs... and up to five million dollars a year in maintenance. After voting on ′Agenda 2020′ on Monday and Tuesday,... the IOC will hand over a list of potential cities to the PyeongChang Organizing Committee... which has until March to make its decision. The candidates include Nagano in Japan and Salt Lake City in the U.S., as well as ten other sites in Europe, America and Asia. PyeongChang organizers are said to be looking at all available options, but say long-term plans have been drawn up for the venues and construction has already begun. Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

Pres. Park dismisses possibility of hosting Pyeongchang Winter Games overseas

00:49
President Park didn′t say anything about that scandal, but she did mention something about the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. She says... holding events outside of Pyeongchang is out of the question... since construction on the venues have already started. This was at a meeting with senior secretaries on Monday... where she also said Korea had put in too much effort in three bids to host the Winter Games to let it go to waste. The president emphasized that government officials needed to convey Seoul′s position and make sure preparations are on course... to ensure a successful hosting of the Olympic Games come 2018. This... as the International Olympic Committee suggests Korea to consider holding certain events outside the country to cut costs.
