If you want to learn bodybuilding from the world's best bodybuilder, you're in the right place. | Basics Are Best | "The biggest mistake being made in bodybuilding today is that people aren't covering basic exercises," says the Austrian Oak. And by basic, Arnold doesn't mean easy. Many contemporary fitness centers are full of people on machines, not in squat racks, and big-box gyms often lack even a single platform. Arnold disapproves: "Today, when I go in the gymnasium, I don't see any of the kids learning about the clean and press, or the snatch, or the upright row from the floor." Schwarzenegger's insistence on the essential lifts is not due to some grandfatherly desire to live in the past. It comes from decades of continued interest and expertise in the industry, and from the hard-earned knowledge that it doesn't take fancy machines or off-the-wall programming to become arguably the best bodybuilder in history. Get back to your bodybuilding roots and experience unbelievable growth. | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips | Chest: "There are three chest exercises that should always be done," Arnold says. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye." Back: "For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end." Arms: Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. "For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later." Shoulders: Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses." Legs "The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs," says Arnold. "I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls." Abs: "The regular training we did for abs was just leg raises, knee raises, crunches, and sit-ups. It will most definitely help you build the solid, thick back musculature you're after, but it won't be easy. You'll need to put in some serious work. Get your head ready, because this bomber back session includes a hearty helping of dropsets, trisets, intraset stretching, and good ol' heavy lifting. Lift to failure on all your sets, but stay focused on form. Keep your rest periods to a minimum and don't waste time. During my hypertrophy workouts, I keep my own rest between sets to roughly 60 seconds, and I never exceed 80 seconds. All of these movements emphasize the lats, delts, and traps while throwing in a good amount of midback and shoulder work. This is Max Tapper again for Howcast. And I'm going to show you guys how to do an awesome back workout. Now, I specifically chose three different exercises other than pull-ups, which are my favorite, because a lot of you guys have requested that. Now, what I've chosen is a pull-down, lat pull-down. Second one is going to be a bent over dumbbell row. And the third one is going to be a rear delt fly. That would've targeted every single muscle in your back and help you get a nice, beefy back with a lot of definition. All right, so the first exercise I'm going to show you how to do is going to be a lat pull-down. Now, I know I'm facing you on this machine. The proper way would be to be facing this way. But, because it's for display purposes, I want you to see everything. So, this is how it's going to work. We're going to have our arms straight up. Again, we're going to use our hands like hooks. Instead of squeezing with our hands, we're just going to hook them. Now, we're going to think of pulling our elbows down to the sides of our body. And slow on the way up. Now, once that bar comes near my sternum, this exercise is done. Once my elbows get near the side of my body, the exercise is done, okay? There and it's over. Now, all these exercises will be done to about 12 repetitions. So, we're going to pick a weight that's challenging enough, but we can definitely control it to 12 repetitions without squirming and trying to find some other muscles to jump in and help. All right? So, we're going to go through three sets of 12 repetitions at a lat pull-down. Now, we're going to go into our second exercise, which is going to be a dumbbell row, all right? Let me show you how to do that. Now, for our second exercise, we're going to a dumbbell row. And all we need is something like a bench or some kind of seat that we could put our arm on to stabilize and take your pressure off our lower back, okay? So, this is our position. Bending at the knees, hips out, back flat, as parallel to the floor as you can get it. Okay? Now, we're going to reach down, grab this dumbbell and pull. Lower the weight down again and pull. Lower the weight down again and pull. The one thing you want to pay attention to is you're not trying to bring your dumbbell to your bicep. You're trying to keep it as close to your leg as possible. That just ensures that you're using more lats than biceps. And one more. Now that is our dumbbell row. So, you want to make sure that you choose a right weight again that you can control for up to 12 repetitions. If you feel like you're pulling with your legs or pulling with your lower back, it's too heavy, all right? So, second exercise, dumbbell row. Now, I'm going to take you into our third exercise which is going to be a rear delt fly. And we can use this same bench that we're on, but we need to do is get a little bit smaller weights. So this third exercise is going to target the upper-back muscles, okay? The nice postural muscles behind our shoulders. Our rear delts, our rhomboids and our traps. We're going to pick something that's much lighter. These are going to be ten pounds. Our position is going to be leaning forward and lifting out to the side. One, slow on the way down. Lean forward. All right, guys. So, those three exercises put together will make an awesome back workout for you, especially, if you're just starting. Now remember, choose a weight that you can handle up to 12 repetitions. If your body is searching for something else to help other muscles, then obviously, it's too heavy. I prefer you guys to stay safe, all right? Now, remember. Four sets of 12 repetitions for each exercise, okay? So, that's 12, rest for about 45 seconds to 60 seconds. Another 12, rest again. Another 12, rest again. Done with that exercise and we go onto the next one. So, four on lat pulldown, four on a bent-over dumbbell row and then four on our rear delt flys. All right, guys? So get out there, have a good time, enjoy and as always, be safe.

In todays episode we are going to show you how to build lean muscle in your back faster than you ever thought possible. I have received a bunch of emails asking how to get that desired v-shaped back so I wanted to make a video showing you the exact back workout I do for my ripped v-shaped back. When you build your back properly the rest of your body will look bigger too! These power lifts I incorporate into this routine will help you develop your upper and lower back. A lot of people get confused how to properly build your back. People spend years trying to build a strong ripped back. Many give up... because its REALLY hard, but I am going to show you a really effective way to build your back that takes about 5 minutes and will get your back ripped up FAST! Here's how it works: T-BAR ROWS 0:43 4-5 sets of 12. Just grab a regular bench bar and stick in in a corner of whatever room you are working out in. Wrap a t-bar around the bar and simply pull the bar to your chest. Make sure you aren't jerking the weight up, just stay slow and deliberate with your motion and you will feel the burn! Dead lifts: 3:17 4-5 sets. This is a common power lift I know many of you have seen me do before. However its effectiveness in building muscle on your back is unmatched. Make sure your feet stay planted and your back stays straight. Do a weight where you are working really hard to get up your last rep of every set. Pull overs: 4:17 Position your body parallel to the bench stabilizing your shoulder blades on the width end. Start with a barbell raised above the center of your chest. As you move the barbell back behind your head try to keep your back flat and parallel to the floor. When you bring the barbell back to the starting position remember to exhale and feel your chest and triceps flex.
