The Tower of London - London - England. Famous Landmarks.

03:15
The Tower of London - London - England. Famous Landmarks. Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site. The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. The Tower has served variously as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public records office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. From the early 14th century until the reign of Charles II, a procession would be led from the Tower to Westminster Abbey on the coronation of a monarch. In the absence of the monarch, the Constable of the Tower is in charge of the castle. This was a powerful and trusted position in the medieval period. In the late 15th century the castle was the prison of the Princes in the Tower. Under the Tudors, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, and despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower". Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture and death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists and 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin and John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures. In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison, and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired and the castle reopened to the public. Today the Tower of London is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Under the ceremonial charge of the Constable of the Tower, it is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site. The ghost of Anne Boleyn, beheaded in 1536 for treason against Henry VIII, allegedly haunts the chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, where she is buried, and has been said to walk around the White Tower carrying her head under her arm. Other ghosts include Henry VI, Lady Jane Grey, Margaret Pole, and the Princes in the Tower. Tower of London to Wapping - London's Best Riverside Walk

12:52
Tower of London to Wapping - London's Best Riverside Walk. This is one of my favourite riverside walks which takes in some lovely old historic pubs too along the river Thames. Starting at The Tower of London see Dead Man's Hole underneath Tower Bridge where dead bodies used to wash up. Then past St Catherine's Dock where Shackleton departed Britain for the last time and down Wapping High Street. Then take a look along the shore of the River Thames where you might go mudlarking and find a Tudor shoe or some other ancient artifact. Continue to the Town of Ramsgate Pub and learn the history of Judge Jeffreys, the hanging judge and where Captain Bligh had his final drink with the crew of The Bounty. Past Wapping Pier Head and then to Execution Dock and the Captain Kidd Pub and Thames River Police. After that past Wapping Station and onto The Prospect of Whitby, one of the oldest riverside pubs in London called Devil's Tavern. Then in Limehouse and past the London Hydraulic Company and Captain Cook's house which used to be the old Chinatown and inspired Sherlock Holmes, Fu Man Chu and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Then finish your walk at The Grapes where Charles Dickens used to drink and which features in Our Mutual Friend. 19th May 1536: Execution of Anne Boleyn in the Tower of London

02:20
http://www.HistoryPod.net On the 19th May 1536, Anne Boleyn – Henry VIII’s second wife and mother of the future Elizabeth I – was beheaded in the Tower of London, having been found guilty of adultery, treason, and incest. Although found unanimously guilty by a jury of 27 peers, the evidence against her was questionable. Only one person accused of an affair with Anne admitted his guilt, and this was extracted under torture. Some historians believe that her involvement in court politics led the influential Thomas Cromwell to engineer her downfall. Meanwhile, other historians point to the problem of her not having bourn the king a male heir. A series of miscarriages in the months prior to her arrest further suggested she wouldn’t do so in the future. The lack of a son from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, had originally driven Henry to find a new wife. Anne found herself in a precarious situation. She gave birth to a stillborn son in January 1536, and soon afterwards Henry took Jane Seymour – one of Anne’s ladies-in-waiting – as a mistress. Since she was queen, the Treason Act meant that the queen’s infidelity was treasonous. The punishment for a woman was burning alive, but Henry commuted it to beheading and had an expert French swordsman brought over to carry out the execution with a single stroke. Anne maintained her innocence to the end. She was buried in an unmarked grave, but the site was identified in 1876 and is now marked with a marble slab.

Top London Attractions - Tower of London - England United Kingdom - Tower of London History

00:47
Are you searching for the top attractions in London which you will need to visit while you are in the city? There are a couple of ones to be mentioned which people always know about and visit without even searching, one of these touristic attractions in London is the Tower of London. The history of the Tower of London was written first when William the conqueror built a mighty stone tower at the centre of his London fortress back in the 1070's, defeated Londoners back at that time used to look at this tower in awe, which is exactly the same thing now when all those millions of visitors come to check it on a yearly basis. The Tower of London is not just a building that astonished people when they come to visit it from the outside, but it is also the home for different traditions that are still living in it until today, such as the Ceremony of the Keys as well as the ghost stories and the terrible tales of torture and execution. The Tower of London is also the protector of the Crown Jewels, it is home of the Yeoman Warders and its legendary guardians, the pampered ravens and it has also been home to a wide array of institutions that include the Royal Mint, the Royal Armouries and even a zoo. Through the long history of the Tower of London, it has been known as the secure place where the royal possessions were guarded and even where the royal family itself was guarded in the times of war and invasions. Over all those years, the Tower of London was used as a luxurious place by the monarchs, but we should never forget that this tower has been always seen as a symbol of fear as well and this goes back to the rivals and enemies who the kings and queens used to imprison within the walls of the tower. The Tower of London is also known as the White Tower and it is located on the north bank of River Thames in central London; it is found just beside the famous Tower Bridge of London which is one of the other top attractions of the city. The Tower is a complex of several buildings which are located within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat, and there were several phases of expansion in the 12th and 13th centuries which were mainly done under Kings Richard I, Henry III and Edward I. With all the things that have written the history of this huge castle in London and the different things it is considered responsible for, like protecting the royal possessions and the royal family at times, it has also been used as a prison in the 16th and 17 centuries and there were many famous figures who have fallen into disgrace during that time, like Elizabeth I before she became a queen, Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth Throckmorton who were all held within the walls of the castle. This use of the castle actually led to the appearance of the phrase "sent to the tower", but despite this reputation about the place when it comes to torture and execution, there were only seven people executed within the tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. After the World Wars, the castle was restored several times and was used for different reasons, it was also used for executions once again and eventually it was restored and opened to the public so that they could come in and check the place. Today, the Tower of London is one of the top attractions of the city that is visited by millions of people per year. The Tower of London is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and it is protected as a World Heritage Site under the ceremonial charge of the Constable of the Tower. When London is mentioned in any conversation there is, there are a couple of touristic attractions which are usually mentioned. The Tower of London is one of those attractions as well as the Tower Bridge that is located right next to it - and it is believed that the two names are related to one another - but there is also Buckingham Palace which is considered the most famous now in the city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z57xeLn1Zaw), Big Ben which identifies London as being an important attraction in it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_pETuPDFSM), London Eye which is now known as Coco-Cola London Eye and which gives people views all over the city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHtQq7wQTQc), there is also the Chinatown in London (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SXA8F6fpZI), London Aquarium (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij6ebsE3EF8) and the famous Natural History Museum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=staR4hsWHzc). Looking back into the history of the places that you visit in every single city you travel to will bring lots of information and will give you the chance to try and picture it all, adding new information to your mind. The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard I, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.
Tower of London- A Fascinating Historical Place

08:27
One of the greatest historical places in England. It was built by william the conqueror around 1066 and was a great medieval palace for a long time as well as a prison and a dungeon. It is famous for its many towers including the bloody tower where the two princes were murdered. Anne Boleyn and katherine howard were executed on tower green and their bodies lie in the chapel right behind the execution site in st peter ad vincula. In the wakefield tower, there is graffiti carved into the walls from prisoners from long ago. There is graffiti known to be carved by lady jane grey or her husband who was known as the 9 day queen. She was executed within the tower by Queen Mary who is now known as bloody Mary. Elizabeth I was also kept in the tower at one point for false accusations against her. Sir Walter Raleigh was also kept prisoner here for almost 12 years! This place is known to be a very haunted place due to its dark historical past. Also famous for housing the crown jewels where many tourists come to see them. It currently has the fit for a king exhibit which displays henry VIII's actual armour. Known to be a haunted castle

Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison since at least 1100, although that was not its primary purpose. It is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site. 15th August 1941: The last execution takes place at the Tower of London

02:53
http://www.HistoryPod.net I’m very grateful to Giselle K. Jakobs for her thorough research and detailed website about the focus of today’s podcast – her grandfather, Josef Jakobs. You can visit her website at http://www.josefjakobs.info/ The last execution at the Tower of London took place on the 15th August 1941. Josef Jakobs was a German spy who was arrested after he signalled for help after breaking his ankle when he parachuted into Britain. Jakobs had served in the German Army during the First World War, and became a dentist in the interwar period. However, due to impact of the worldwide depression he turn to selling fake gold, for which he served two and a half years in jail. After his release, Jakobs became involved in providing counterfeit passports to German Jews fleeing Hitler’s regime. However, he was arrested in 1938 and sent to a concentration camp from which he was released in 1940. Within six months Jakobs had begun training with the Abwehr – the intelligence wing of the Germany Army – and on the 31st January 1941 dressed in a business suit and parachuted into England. Having broken his ankle, he was found the next morning in a field near Dovehouse Farm in Huntingdonshire. Jakobs was taken into custody, and was held at Dulwich Hospital in London while complications with his broken ankle were treated. Eventually he was transferred to Wandsworth Prison, where he was formally charged with espionage and tried by General Court Marshall in early August since he didn’t have British nationality and was a formal member of the Germany Army. Found guilty, he was taken to the miniature firing range at the Tower of London on the 15th. Having been strapped to a wooden Windsor chair, he was killed by firing squad at 7:12 a.m.

Tower of London K-Rated by William & Martha

03:30
For more info, news and offers visit http://www.kidrated.com William and Martha visit the Tower of London. Founded nearly a millennium ago when the first foundations were laid in 1078, The Tower of London has been expanded upon over the centuries by many kings and queens. William The Conqueror decided he needed a stronghold to keep the citizens of London in line and the site he chose to build on, Claudius, the Roman Emperor, had used as a fortress more than a thousand years before. In fact traces of the Roman wall are still seen within the Tower grounds. The addition of other smaller towers, extra buildings, walls and walkways, gradually transformed the original building into the splendid example of castle, fortress, prison, palace and finally museum that we enjoy today. IT HAS been used as a fortress , used to imprison (for many an accused, it was the last sight they saw on earth), as a home for kings and queens, and as a royal mint and treasury. Originally, the caps at the top of the four turrets were conical, but were replaced by the present onion-shaped ones in the sixteenth century. It was Henry III that renamed the entire area the Tower of London. Although he used it as a prison, he continued to use it as a palace and entertained guests and many came with gifts of animals. These gifts were kept near the drawbridge where he built Lion Tower; a zoo where visitors would be greeted by roaring beasts. Today it houses the Crown Jewels and is keeper to the Royal Ravens. Today the official title of the Tower is still 'Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London'. Tower of London & Tower Bridge Vacation Travel Video Guide

09:34
Travel video about destination Tower of London & tower Bridge in England. The Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdom’s capital city. Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Tower’s original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors’ Gate into the notorious dungeons. In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day. It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigours of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when official execution was replaced by cold-blooded murder. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry The Eighth, was the most famous of those who fell victim to the Tower. Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian technology and construction. Its drawbridge once allowed large sailing ships to travel to the centre of the city. Today, however, the majority of large ships dock downstream and now the famous old bridge is raised around nine hundred times each year to facilitate the passage of numerous vessels that travel along the Thames. Even today the River Thames is ruled by this majestic bridge and the spectacular view from the Bridge’s 50 metre high walkway is truly fascinating. Tower Bridge and the Tower Of London are without any doubt two of London’s most striking and fascinating landmarks.

LONDON's Famous TOWER Bridge at night l টাওয়ার ব্রীজ লন্ডন ।

02:52
Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of London, resulting in it sometimes being confused with London Bridge, situated some 0.5 mi (0.80 km) upstream. Tower Bridge is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. It is the only one of the Trust's bridges not to connect the City of London directly to the Southwark bank, as its northern landfall is in Tower Hamlets. The bridge consists of two bridge towers tied together at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal tension forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical components of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. Before its restoration in the 2010s, the bridge's colour scheme dated from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Its colours were subsequently restored to blue and white. The bridge deck is freely accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians, whereas the bridge's twin towers, high-level walkways and Victorian engine rooms form part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition, for which an admission charge is made. The nearest London Underground tube stations are Tower Hill on the Circle and District lines, London Bridge on the Jubilee and Northern lines and Bermondsey on the Jubilee line, and the nearest Docklands Light Railway station is Tower Gateway. The nearest National Rail stations are at Fenchurch Street and London Bridge.
