The Most Fun English Teaching (ESL) Game -- "Hot Seat"

04:28
A quick 4-minute description of how to play "Hot Seat" and a list of possible phrases to use! This game is great for a one-hour long lesson; it can also be used to teach Spanish and French, for example, to non-native speakers. To be honest it can be used to teach any language. My specialty is teaching using games. Some people underestimate the power of learning through fun; however, I embrace it to keep my students interested. This game, "Hot Seat" is one that must be played with your students. My favourite ESL class game

04:22
Rules- Before class prepare a key of what weapons will go in each grid space. Divide the class into teams, each person has 3 lives. Draw a 10x10 grid on the board. Ask students the revision questions, whoever gets the question right can choose a square. Tell the student what the square contains. Gun= take one life point away. Two guns = Take two life points from the same person or one each of 2 people. Bomb= The answer-er loses one life point. Fire= The whole team loses one life point. Heart= Add one life point. The team that still has people alive in the end wins. Change the names of the values if you wish. If enough people press 'like' I will add more games.

TEFL (Almost) All Fun and ESL Games

02:38
Apply now through: http://www.meddeas.com/teaching-english-abroad/ My name is Emily, and I’m a 22-year-old from Ankeny, Iowa in the US. As you’ll see, I’m teaching ESL to teenagers in a school in northern Spain (440 teens, to be exact). Through this experience, I’ve found out that ESL games for kids are a good tool to engage students. How did I come to this conclusion? While I was more than a little nervous about taking on so many adolescent pupils, the secret to winning them over is to find out what motivates them. Don’t just take my word for it, though. As I’m in the advanced program, Meddeas has provided me with a course called Expert in Bilingual Education through the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. Many educational experts we’ve studied in the course—like Robert C. Gardner and Larry Ferlazzo—say that students need to be intrinsically motivated in order to really learn a language. Exam grades, parents and teachers’ expectations, candy, even—these are all external motivators. I can wave these in front of my students all I want, but if they don’t have the ganas (“desire”) to learn, they won’t take much away from the class. So how do you find something that’s intrinsically motivating to 440 different teens? After months of trial and error, I discovered the common denominator of all my successes in the classroom: fun. ESL games for teenagers are a great way for students to drill vocabulary. They also help students become comfortable using new grammatical concepts, and develop conversational fluency in English. In the video, some of my 12-16 year-old students from 1-4 ESO demonstrate how this is done. I think you’ll find their ganas quite evident when there are ESL games in the classroom. While they sometimes walk down the hallways like they’re too cool for school, the video shows that they’re just absolute goofs who like to have a good time. This is evidenced by my 1st ESO students who insisted on wearing the stickers I gave them on their foreheads. Also by the fashionable Sellotape choker my 3rd ESO student Peru is sporting. He made it himself—a surprise to no one who knows him. Don’t let their cool, apathetic personas fool you—teens like to have fun, and the best way to entertain them in the classroom is through ESL games. They can get super competitive. Even the students who don’t care about learning English still usually care about winning. Thus, when using English is the medium to do that, they generally engage more and learn subconsciously. One of my personal pedagogical philosophies—adopted from theorist Stephen Krashen—has come to be that sometimes you have to distract students from realizing they are learning by making the subject or task itself so interesting and compelling that they forget they are using English. The same applies to students who are shy or worried about making mistakes: when they speak you have to make what they want to say or do overrule their fear of failure. Class isn’t all fun and games, though. Sometimes we have to crack down and do bookwork, listening exercises, and worksheets. Sometimes sass and hormone levels are high. ESL class games are always the reward for working hard, though, and that usually gets us through the class without too many problems. Teenagers aren’t the easiest age group to teach, but in the end, it’s been rewarding. I didn’t always want to teach them, though. I remember my Meddeas interview vividly: I’d been chatting with a lovely Spanish woman named Flavia in a café for over half an hour when I told her: “I think I’d most like to work with primary-aged students.” She took a long look at me, as if peering deep into my soul, profiling my innermost capabilities and desires, then said: “I think you could work with teenagers. I think sometimes we’re afraid to work with teens, but you seem like someone who could take charge.” Flavia’s benediction not only banished my fears of adolescent hormones, it filled me with “ganas” to teach that age group. Think of the satisfying, intelligent conversations I could have with teenagers who would be able to speak in complete sentences and contemplate abstract concepts! And alas, it came to be: I’ve spent the last year in the Basque Country of northern Spain teaching English to the teenagers of Larramendi Ikastola—all 440 of them in Secondary and Bachillerato. I know it’s not easy being a teenage. I was one a few years ago myself, so I can empathize. With this in mind, I’ve tried to prepare ESL games and classroom activities I would have enjoyed doing as a student learning Spanish. Besides, it’s a win-win—if the kids are having fun, this usually means that the teacher is too. By Emily P. For more information visit our blog: http://www.meddeas.com/blog/

Classroom English: Vocabulary & Expressions for Students

09:36
http://www.engvid.com Are you the new student in your English class? Do you understand what your teacher is saying? In this lesson, we will go over some of the vocabulary, expressions, and questions that you might hear in class. What do you say if they are speaking too fast or if you didn't hear? It can be stressful to ask questions, but after this lesson, you will be more confident participating and interacting with your teacher and classmates. Take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/classroom-english/ TRANSCRIPT: Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson comes as a request, because I know that there are actually quite a few of you who are teachers of English, and you wanted to know some classroom English. So, today, we're going to look at classroom English. This is more for beginners, especially people who have just joined an English class, an ESL class, EFL class, etc. and you're starting to get used to the classroom environment, and you're not exactly sure what the teacher is saying, what you should say, etc. We're going to start with the teachers. What do teachers say that you need to understand? Okay? [Clears throat] Excuse me. First, the teacher will take attendance, or the teacher will take roll call. Sorry, these are two separate words, "roll call". Basically, they want to know who is here and who is not here. Okay? So, if a student is in the class, he or she is present. So, if the teacher says: -"Bill?" -"Present." -"Mary?" -"Present." -"Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?" Bueller is absent. He or she is not in the class. So, "absent", not here. "Present", here. If the teacher has finished with attendance and starts to teach the class, and a student comes in then, that student is late. And they get a little check. Too many lates, you get into trouble. Now, you could be absent, but you can have an excused absent, means that you have a note from your parents, from your doctor, from your boss, or the teacher just knows that you're not coming today and it's okay; it's excused. Now, the teacher will give you commands. He or she will tell you to do things. Okay? So, it's very important that you understand what to do. If a teacher says: "Put up your hand", or: "Raise your hand to ask a question, to make a comment, to ask to go to the bathroom", put up your hand. Raise your hand. Don't speak out. Because if everybody speaks out, it's just noise. Put up your hand, ask your question, get your answer. Okay? Then, the teacher will ask you: "Take out your notebooks. Take out your pens. Take out your earphones." Basically, get them ready, we are going to use them. Okay. "Take your seats." Basically means sit down, sit. Okay? So, he's trying to get organized, or she is trying to get organized. Next, they'll say: "Take out your book. Turn to page 37." Means open your book, page 37, let's start reading, working, etc. Now, if the teacher wants you to do things, but not alone... For example, if you're doing math, yeah, you do it alone no problem. If you're doing ESL, the teacher will want you to work in pairs. It means two people together, so you can speak. "Work in groups", means get into a few people together; three, four, five. If he wants a specific number, he will say: "Get into groups of", or: "Work in groups of three." So, you find your two friends, three sit together, do the exercise. Now, if the teacher... As everybody's talking, the teacher wants everybody be quiet and listen to one student, he will say or she will say: "Please pay attention to Jack. Jack is going to speak. Everybody, please pay attention to Jack." Or if you're doing exercise, if the teacher wants you to be careful about one word or one grammar structure: "Pay attention to the independent clause." Means be very focused, be aware. Okay? So, these are the basic things you need to know what... That your teacher will say. Now, you're the student, you have questions or you don't understand something, what are you going to say or what are you going to ask?

ESL Speaking Game (Practice)

00:45
This video is practice before a fluency game that I made for my EFL classes. I have about 22 different classes that I teach with varying levels in each class. It has taken me years to develop a process that aligns students' motivation, behavior, and skill to maximize class time for optimal language acquisition that's FUN. The timer is the key to their motivation. You need to have the artificial pressure to prod them on. Groups create peer pressure and competition to accel beyond themselves. (That one is why communism and socialism don't work and stifle economic growth) Simple Dialogue A: Can you [x]? B: Yes, I can. / No, I can't Enjoy a minute of my day job. It's funny. I remember my dad telling me that teachers were people that couldn't work. It requires a certain skill set. That is for sure.

How to Teach ESL Conversation Class. The BEST Way I've Found Teaching English Abroad.

20:54
There are a TON of jobs teaching English conversation abroad. It is often one of the best classes to learn how to dominate because once you do, the recipe becomes very simple to replicate. Teaching ESL will become interesting and entertaining. A lot of teachers get flustered and think they have to step on stage and rock the mic for an hour, but this is one of the worst things you can do. Not only does it sap your energy, it takes the pressure off the students. If you implement these steps, you will do a great job and your ESL students abroad will get the most out of your activities. Introduction to ESL Listening Speaking Role-Play Activity

06:12
This is just a quick background on the Role-Play Activity video I am going to post next. The class is an Advanced English listening/speaking class. I was looking for a way to have them practice speaking and listening to one another that was more involved and fun. I used a model that one of my teachers performed in my practicum class, and I believe that this was rather successful. I talked with the students after the role-play and asked how they felt, if they had fun, if they felt more comfortable speaking in English if they were speaking for a fictional character instead of themselves. Many of them really enjoyed it. So, here is some background! Since this was our first time trying this model students were only assessed on the sentences they created for their scripts and on the notes they took. Next time I will build a speaking rubric as well.
