Classroom English: Vocabulary & Expressions for Students

09:36
http://www.engvid.com Are you the new student in your English class? Do you understand what your teacher is saying? In this lesson, we will go over some of the vocabulary, expressions, and questions that you might hear in class. What do you say if they are speaking too fast or if you didn't hear? It can be stressful to ask questions, but after this lesson, you will be more confident participating and interacting with your teacher and classmates. Take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/classroom-english/ TRANSCRIPT: Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson comes as a request, because I know that there are actually quite a few of you who are teachers of English, and you wanted to know some classroom English. So, today, we're going to look at classroom English. This is more for beginners, especially people who have just joined an English class, an ESL class, EFL class, etc. and you're starting to get used to the classroom environment, and you're not exactly sure what the teacher is saying, what you should say, etc. We're going to start with the teachers. What do teachers say that you need to understand? Okay? [Clears throat] Excuse me. First, the teacher will take attendance, or the teacher will take roll call. Sorry, these are two separate words, "roll call". Basically, they want to know who is here and who is not here. Okay? So, if a student is in the class, he or she is present. So, if the teacher says: -"Bill?" -"Present." -"Mary?" -"Present." -"Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?" Bueller is absent. He or she is not in the class. So, "absent", not here. "Present", here. If the teacher has finished with attendance and starts to teach the class, and a student comes in then, that student is late. And they get a little check. Too many lates, you get into trouble. Now, you could be absent, but you can have an excused absent, means that you have a note from your parents, from your doctor, from your boss, or the teacher just knows that you're not coming today and it's okay; it's excused. Now, the teacher will give you commands. He or she will tell you to do things. Okay? So, it's very important that you understand what to do. If a teacher says: "Put up your hand", or: "Raise your hand to ask a question, to make a comment, to ask to go to the bathroom", put up your hand. Raise your hand. Don't speak out. Because if everybody speaks out, it's just noise. Put up your hand, ask your question, get your answer. Okay? Then, the teacher will ask you: "Take out your notebooks. Take out your pens. Take out your earphones." Basically, get them ready, we are going to use them. Okay. "Take your seats." Basically means sit down, sit. Okay? So, he's trying to get organized, or she is trying to get organized. Next, they'll say: "Take out your book. Turn to page 37." Means open your book, page 37, let's start reading, working, etc. Now, if the teacher wants you to do things, but not alone... For example, if you're doing math, yeah, you do it alone no problem. If you're doing ESL, the teacher will want you to work in pairs. It means two people together, so you can speak. "Work in groups", means get into a few people together; three, four, five. If he wants a specific number, he will say: "Get into groups of", or: "Work in groups of three." So, you find your two friends, three sit together, do the exercise. Now, if the teacher... As everybody's talking, the teacher wants everybody be quiet and listen to one student, he will say or she will say: "Please pay attention to Jack. Jack is going to speak. Everybody, please pay attention to Jack." Or if you're doing exercise, if the teacher wants you to be careful about one word or one grammar structure: "Pay attention to the independent clause." Means be very focused, be aware. Okay? So, these are the basic things you need to know what... That your teacher will say. Now, you're the student, you have questions or you don't understand something, what are you going to say or what are you going to ask?
Pass It - A Vocabulary Review that uses Flashcards! - Easy ESL Games

03:01
In this video, Steve demonstrates a super easy way to review vocabulary while using flashcards. The set up is simple. Make a circle, read the word on a flash card out loud and pass it to the student next to you so they can do the same. When the card makes it all the way around the circle, switch vocabulary targets and repeat. After your students master the basic version of the game, then make it increasingly difficult by throwing in all of the different variations Steve uses in the video. Have you played "Pass It" in your classroom? Are there any variations we're leaving out? 12:51
Do you know how to play the game of poker? If so, can you play it in English? After watching this fun lesson, you will be able to play a game of poker or any other card game using English vocabulary. You might also be surprised to know that this vocabulary appears in movies a lot! I will teach you the card names, suits, and the names of some combinations to help you win! You will learn the meaning of "bluff", "royal flush", "full house", "poker face", "three of a kind", and more. So grab your best lucky charms, and get ready to play. Good luck! Take the quiz on this lesson at: http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-expressions-for-poker-and-other-card-games/ TRANSCRIPT Oh, there we are. Hi there. Welcome to poker night with Ronnie. Do you know how to play poker? Maybe? Do you know how to play poker in English? I'm going to teach you. I know how to play poker. I am not very good at playing poker; I always seem to get really terrible cards, no fault of my own. Very skilled in the game, just bad luck. Luck of the draw is not with me. I'm going to put my old-school video camera away, and we're going to learn how to play some poker in English. So, the first thing that we need to know about poker is it's a game. Woo-hoo. It's become very, very, very popular online because you can get a lot of money. The way I learned to play poker was my father taught me, after many a grape soda, sitting around the kitchen table, betting matchsticks. So, welcome to my childhood. I learned how to play poker. What did you do? The most important thing is to learn the name of the cards in English. So, probably you know: A, K, Q, J, 10, and the numbers, but these actually have names. The "A" is the Ace. The "K" is the King. The "Q" is the Queen. The Jack is the "J". Then it goes from 10 all the way down to 2. There is no 1. Sometimes the ace can be used as a 1, but that's too complicated, and I'm not going to tell you my tricks. Well, you're going to lose anyway, so might as well. The other thing that we need to know is what to call the cards. So, these are suits. Not... Suit? Suit, suit, suits... Suits, they're called... I don't know why they're called suits, they're just suits. So, the suits means: Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Now, when I was a child, I had a very stupid brother. Still do. Mm-hmm. And for some reason, he said shovels. Okay? It's a spade, buddy; not a shovel. Get it right. Okay? So, hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades are the proper names of these. So, now you know the vocabulary of the wor-... Of the cards. I'm going to teach you some verbs that you need. The first one probably you know, is a bluff. "Bluff" means you have a face... Oh, Lady Gaga go away. Mm-hmm. Poker Face. Do you know what that means? "Poker face" means you are expressionless. Usually you have a baseball hat, so people can't see your eyes. But a bluff is when you do not let your face show your cards or what you're doing. So, if you're betting money or matchsticks and you want to bluff, you're going to pretend that you have a fabtabulous hand. Now, "the hand" means what cards you have. So, I'm going to pretend that I have the highest cards ever, called a "royal flush". So I would not make expressions with my face, and I would bet a lot of money. I would be bluffing, because maybe I have really, really bad cards. I always have bad cards. So, "bluff" means to, like, lie and pretend you have really, really good cards. The most important word is "bet". "Bet" means you put in money that you're going to lose or win, depending. Before they even deal the cards-"deal the cards" means you give them to people- there's something called an "ante". An "ante", not your mother's sister, means a forced bet before the deal. So, if we were playing cards or playing poker, and I have lots of money, I would ante $100. I would never do that. And then everyone else that wants to play would have to put in, automatically, $100, even before we look at our cards. Scary. What happens is we have the first bet is called "open". So, it would be my turn, I could open, which means I would put in money; or if I did not want to, I could "check" or "pass". This means I don't want to play with money. I'm just like: "No. Enh, we'll see what happens." If I have a really, really, really terrible hand, which means my cards are not good, I would do what's called "folding" or "fold". I would say: "Fold." Fold means: "This is terrible, I'm out. I end the game. I'm no longer playing this." When you bet, you can "call", which means you match what the other person has bet. For example, if the person before me bet $10, I would call, and I also would put in $10. If I wanted to get more money from people, I would "raise the pot", which means I would put in my $10, and I would add more money. So, if I had a really good hand, I would say: "I call the 10, and I raise you 50." So the other people playing, if they wanted to stay in the game, would have to put in $50.

Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learners Through Brain-Based Teaching Strategies by Setenay Çelik

12:33
Having started with the point that children learn easily and forget quickly, I have been working a lot on how to teach vocabulary to young learners by improving their memory skills. If it comes to memory, it is well worth searching about the brain. Throughout my search, I have found out that as long as the teachers meet the needs of the young brains, it is easier for the learners to remember new vocabulary items. In this presentation I’m planning to share my findings and ten practical brain- based activities that I use in my classes and find really effective. Setenay is from Turkey and she has been teaching English for 8 years including 4 years of teaching when she was a university student. She holds a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey. Her particular areas of interest are teaching English to young learners and creating new, useful classroom materials and activities.

English Listening Practice: Improve your vocabulary!

13:26
Want to practice your listening and learn some new vocabulary? In this video, you will play an English listening game. First, I will teach you some new vocabulary and review English prepositions which we will use in our fun listening practice. Next, you will listen to me describe a picture and you will draw the picture. At the end of the lesson, you can see how well you listened to my instructions. Are our pictures the same or different? You can listen to this video as many times as you like to get more practice and you can play this listening activity with your friends or classmates. Try my quiz at the end to see how many new words you remember. https://www.engvid.com/english-listening-practice-vocabulary-prepositions/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and today we have a great lesson plan for you. In today's lesson we are going to practice listening. Okay? We're going to practice listening, and we're also going to learn some new words, we're going to learn about shapes, as well as prepositions. Okay? So, in this video you will also get to do a listening activity and I'll explain a little bit about that in a moment. So first we are going to learn shapes, and these are some examples of shapes, then we are going to learn about prepositions. You might be wondering: "What is a preposition?" Well, a preposition is a short word like: "on", "above", "below". And after that we're going to do a listening activity where you're going to listen to me describe shapes and prepositions. For the listening activity you will need two things: A piece of paper and a pencil or a pen. This is an active video so you will actually be doing something while watching. Okay, so let's get started on shapes. So I have here some major shapes in English. We have a triangle, we have a circle, square, a heart, and this one is a star. In our listening activity later, you will be drawing a triangle, a circle, a square, a heart, and a star. Okay? So these are the words we'll be using in this video. We will also be using some prepositions. So a preposition is a short word that shows the relationship between two things. So that's confusing to a lot of students. An easier way I like to think about prepositions is they can... They can describe where something is. Okay? So they often answer the question of: Where? So, for example, I have here our triangle and our circle, and I have the preposition "on". So if we look at this, I could say: "There is a triangle on a circle." So: "There is a triangle on a circle." So we will be using the preposition "on" later in our listening activity. We also have "inside". "There is a triangle inside a circle." Another preposition is "outside". We can say: "There is a triangle outside the circle." So, here, the triangle is inside, whereas here the triangle is outside. So these are very common prepositions we use when describing where something is. Okay, we also have "above". So, "above" is a little bit different than "on". If you notice the circle, the triangle is on the circle, meaning it's touching, whereas when we're looking at "above" it can be touching, but it can also be just above. So it can touch or it can also just be above. So, for example, we have a triangle above a circle. Okay, now we have "below" and "under", two more common prepositions which we usually use in the same way. So we have here the circle. We can say: "There is a circle". Or actually we can say: "There is a triangle below the circle." Or: "There is a triangle under the circle." Okay? And now we have "to the right". We can say: "There is a triangle to the right of the circle." So notice how they're beside? This side is to the right, whereas this side is to the left. So if we look at the triangle, the triangle is beside the circle and it's also to the right of the circle. Now, compare this to "to the left". We have a triangle and a circle, and we can say: "The triangle now is to the left of the circle." Okay? So these two are opposites: "to the right" and "to the left". So these pictures help you understand these prepositions, which answer the question of: Where? So, again, we have: "on", "inside", "outside", "above", "below/under", "to the right", and "to the left". Okay, now, for the listening activity we are about to do, there are three more expressions that you will need. You will need to know: "in the center". Okay? So if I'm looking at this board, about here is in the center. Okay? So I can say: "My finger is in the center of the board." I can also say about corners. We have a corner, a corner, another corner, and another corner. Okay? So those are called corners. If I'm looking at my piece of paper from earlier, we have a corner here, a corner here, a corner here, and a corner here. So, what I can say is... If I ask you to draw something, I might tell you to draw something in the top corner, which might be here.

You can play along with Cody to see if you can figure out the Spanish words faster than he does. This game you can play at home no matter what your Spanish level is. All you will do is just use vocabulary that is new to you or that is good for your level. How the game works is Maria will give Cody hints about what the Spanish word is he has to guess. Learn English - Travel Vocabulary

15:47
http://www.engvid.com/ Learn important, basic words you will need when you travel. Knowing a little English vocabulary can help a lot when you are travelling. Whever you are going in the world, you can almost always find someone who speaks some English. I'll teach you how a "tourist attraction" is different from a "tourist trap". What about "sight seeing"? Do you know what an "itinerary" is? Do you have your travel documents? Get ready for your English to take flight! http://www.engvid.com/travel-vocabulary/ Hi. James, from EngVid. I was just about to plan my vacation. I'm going to take a long flight to Europe. I'm trying to remember luggage and baggage things, you know? It's kind of hard to do. But this is a lesson for you if you've been working a lot, you need some time off. Now, there's a video I would like you to go check out. That's on time off. It goes with this one. You might want to go away somewhere and not just stay home, right? So this video is for you. This is basic vocabulary on vacation. When you leave and maybe you go to an English speaking country and you want to practice your English, this stuff will be good for you to enjoy your time there, also to make it easy for you when you arrive. Are you ready? Let's go to the board. Mr. E, Mr. E! It's a mystery where he is. It's no mystery. And you thought I forgot. Mr. E has been on vacation with me, and he's enjoying this particular attraction. So let's go to the board. Now, if you're going to go on vacation, one of the first things you will have to do if you're leaving your country is you're going to need some travel documents. What are those? Documents. A "document" is a paper or something with information that tells you something is okay or outlines it for you. For example, your passport is a document given by the government with your picture on it that says you are a citizen of this country, and you are legal. You are a good person. Okay? Now, when you're leaving for a flight, or you want to go to another country, you're going to need travel documents first. Trust me; show up at the airport and go, "I leave now. I go to Canada." They will go, "And the car is that way. Go home, crazy man. Okay?" So we need travel documents. So what are "travel documents"? Well, "travel documents" would be your passport, government identification, usually needed at most places the travel. Inside of a country, not necessary for most places. But leaving the country, you have to have it. Okay? So if you're in the European Union, no problem. If you're in Canada and the United States, you don't need one. But as soon as you leave these countries, you need a passport. What's another thing you need? Well, you need what's called a "boarding pass". If you play soccer, you kick the ball; the other guy, he catches it; you "pass" right? The ball goes from one player to another. A "boarding pass" is what allows you to go from one country to another country. You show the person on the airplane this piece of paper with your passport, and they say, "You know what? You can come on the plane and fly, like the pass." Kick, catch, other country. Cool? All right. So these are your travel documents. You need those. Now, I should have started with you need to make a plan because you want to go visit some place. You want to go on vacation, right? And if you want to go on vacation, well, going to have to -- I said "vacation". A "vacation" is a holiday, another word for saying "time off from work". All right? So you want to go on vacation. Sometimes, we say, "We're going to vacation in Italy." Or "on my vacation, I want to visit Italy." Or "I'm taking a holiday in Italy." Okay? So all these words, when people say, "Well, what are you doing on your time off?" You might go, "I'm going on vacation." Then they know you're leaving. If you just say, "I'm taking time off from work", you could be home cleaning. But no. You're saying, "I'm going on vacation." They're going to go, "Where are you going to visit? Italy, perhaps? Sicily? Is it going to be a good holiday?" And you go, "Yes. I earned my time." "Earned" means to work for something. "I earned my time off. I'm going on vacation."
