Creating Mirrored Volumes
To remove a mirror from a mirrored volume Using a command line Open Command Prompt. Type: diskpart At the DISKPART prompt, type: list disk Make note of the disk number of the disk that has the mirrored volume you want to break into two separate volumes. At the DISKPART prompt, type: break disk n [nokeep] Value Description list disk Displays a list of disks and information about them, such as their size, amount of available free space, whether the disk is a basic or dynamic disk, and whether the disk uses the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partition style. The disk marked with an asterisk (*) has focus. break disk n Applies to dynamic disks only. Breaks a mirrored volume into two simple volumes. These volumes are no longer fault tolerant. The disk specified by n receives the focus so you can assign it a drive letter. If the specified disk is a system or boot volume, the command fails. The other disk retains the drive letter and any mount points that belonged to the mirrored volume. Using the nokeep parameter, the specified disk, n, is deleted and converted to free space, while the other half of the mirror is retained as a simple volume. Neither volume receives the focus. nokeep Specifies that only one of the mirrored volumes retained; the other simple volume is deleted and converted to free space. Neither volume receives the focus. Important Once you remove a mirror from a mirrored volume, the removed mirror becomes unallocated space and the remaining mirror becomes a simple volume that is no longer fault tolerant. All of the data on the removed mirror is deleted. ====================== To replace the failed mirror with a new mirror on another disk If the disk containing part of the mirrored volume is missing and the volume does not return to Healthy status, you should replace the failed mirror with a new mirror on another disk. Open Computer Management (Local). In the console tree, click Disk Management. Where? Computer Management (Local) Storage Disk Management Right-click the mirror on the Missing or Offline disk, and then click Remove Mirror. Follow the instructions on your screen. Right-click the volume to be re-mirrored, and then click Add Mirror. Follow the instructions on your screen. Important Before installing a new disk, break the mirror and then examine the system log to see if the disk or the disk controller is failing. If the failing mirror is on a controller that is failing, installing a new disk on the failing controller will not solve the problem. For instructions describing how to open Event Viewer to examine the system log, click Related Topics

Combining Disks and Basic and Dynamic Disks
This video will look at how multiple disks can be combined together to form the one volume and how basic and dynamic disks work. Dynamic disks are required in most cases when combining disks together. Access the rest of the course http://ITFreeTraining.com/server Download the PDF handout http://ITFreeTraining.com/handouts/server/basic-dynamic.pdf Basic and Dynamic Disks Basic disks have been around since the MS-DOS days and thus have the most compatibility. Dynamic Disks were introduced in Windows 2000 and thus have good compatibility in Windows. Compatibility may become a problem if you use a dynamic disk in Linux. Dynamic disks are supported in Linux however support is dependent on the distribution. Additional packages may need to be installed and the distribution may not support booting from a dynamic disk. Dynamic disks also offer additional features over basic disks. For example, they add a signature to the disk so that if the disk is moved from one computer to another Windows will detect the disk has been moved. Basic disks cannot be combined with other disks and thus features are limited to one disk. For example, an existing volume can be resized on a basic disk. In order to do this there must be contiguous space free at the end of the volume. If this is not there, the disk will need to be defragmented. Basic disks also support booting where dynamic disks only support booting when configured in certain ways. If you want to combine multiple disks together you require dynamic disks. Windows supports a one way conversion between basic and dynamic disks. Dynamic Disk Support Dynamic disks are supported in all Windows Server editions after Windows Server 2000. Client operating systems between XP and 7 require the high business level operating system but after that, all operating systems support dynamic disks. Combining Multiple Disks Dynamic disks allow multiple drives or the space from multiple drives to be combined together in order to create one volume. There are a number of different configurations supported. Spanned volume: A spanned volume combines the space from multiple drives together to form the one volume. This allows you to combine unused space into one volume, however it does not offer redundancy if a drive fails nor does it offer speed improvements. It also does not support booting. Mirrored Volume: This is when two disks have the same data on them. This allows the operating system to continue running if one disk fails. Unlike other dynamic disk configurations, mirrored volumes support booting of the operating system. Striped Volume: This volume takes disks of the same size and combines them together to form the one disk. The data is evenly distributed across the disks. It offers excellent read and write performance however does not offer any redundancy. It also does not support booting. RAID-5: This configuration requires 3 or more drives with the same amount of free space. The drives are combined into one volume. One drive is lost to parity, which is extra data, that means that volume will still keep running if one drive is lost. This volume gives fast read performance but slow write performance. It is available only in Server operating systems and does not support booting the operating system. Virtual Hard Disk Demonstration
This video will look at how to create virtual hard disks on Windows Server 2012 R2 using the VHD and VHDX format. The video will also look at how to convert between the different formats. The principles used in this video also apply to client operating system. Access the rest of the course http://ITFreeTraining.com/server Download the PDF: http://ITFreeTraining.com/handouts/server/virtualhddemo.pdf Demonstration creating virtual disks in Disk Management 1) To create and manage virtual disks this can be done with “Disk Management”. “Disk Management” can be opened by right clicking on the start menu and selecting the option “Disk Management”. 2) To create a new VHD, open the action menu and then select the option “Create VHD”. 3) To create a new virtual hard disk, enter in the location you want to create the virtual hard disk at the top of the screen. 4) Under the location select the size of the virtual hard disk that you want to create. If you create a virtual hard disk using the VHD format then the largest virtual hard disk you can create is 2040 Gigabytes. If you use the VHDX format you can create a virtual hard disk that is up to 64 Terabytes in size. The VHDX format is only supported on Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 and above. The VHDX format offers additional performance features as well as transaction logging. 5) In the middle of the screen select the format you want to use to create the virtual machine. Either VHD or VHDX. 6) At the bottom you can choose if the virtual hard disk is fixed in size or dynamically expanding. The size of the dynamically expanding virtual disk will be same as the amount of data stored on the virtual disk. The fixed option creates a file the same size as the virtual disk. This makes performance of the virtual disk faster, however it does mean that more disk space will be used. 7) Once a virtual disk is created it will automatically be mounted and thus will appear in disk management. The icon used in disk management will be blue to indicate that it is a virtual disk. The icon used for physical hard disks will be grey. If the computer is restarted the virtual hard disk will need to be mounted again. If you want the virtual disk to be automatically mounted during start up, a script will need to created and run at start up to mount the virtual disk. 8) Like a newly installed physical hard disk with data on it, the virtual hard disk will need to be initialized before it can be used. To do this, right click on the virtual hard disk and select the option “Initialize Disk”. In this case MBR will be used, however you could use GPT as well if the hardware that you were planning to use the virtual disk on supported GPT. 9) Once the disk has been initialized it will be able to be formatted. To do this, right click on the virtual disk and select the option “New Simple Volume”. You are free to choose your own options, however in this case all the defaults were used. This will create a drive using all the free space and format it with NTFS. Demonstration creating virtual disks using PowerShell 1) To open PowerShell, press the PowerShell icon in the quick launch bar. 2) If you run the command convert-vhd in PowerShell you will get an error message saying the Hyper-V role needs to be installed. To install Hyper-V, assuming the server meets the requirements, open Server Manager and select the option on the welcome screen “Add roles and features” and then from the wizard accept all the defaults except for ticking the role “Hyper-V” on the “Select server roles” screen. Part of the install will install the module “Hyper-V Module for Windows PowerShell” which is what you need to run the PowerShell commands. Unfortunately the whole Hyper-V role needs to be installed in order for the PowerShell commands to work. If you are not able to install Hyper-V on the server, it is also possible to run these PowerShell commands on Windows clients like Windows 8 assuming the Hyper-V role is installed on those clients. The server or client will need to be restarted after the install. 3) To convert a VHD file from one format to another use the PowerShell command Convert-VHD –Path (Source) –DestinationPath (Dest). e.g. Convert-VHD –Path c:\DataDrive.vhd –DestinationPath c:\DataDrive.vhdx Description too long for YouTube. Solved!! 2TB Limit on Windows Server Install
2048 GB Limit on HyperV Server install removed. Easy and simple allow big disks to be used on your server. The 2TB limit is because of the MBR format. GPT is required to allow greater than 2TB but cannot be changed directly when Windows is installed on the same disk. This can be done when Windows Server is first installed using the DiskPart tool. The DiskPart tool is on the Windows Server install disk and allows you to convert the disk to GPT. Once the drive is GPT, it can be extended well beyond 2TB. Here are some caveats. You actually need UEFI if your boot disk is greater-than 2TB because Windows will not allow itself to install on a GPT disk without UEFI and a bios that support UEFI. Windows will automatically convert a disk back to MBR before installing. If you have a lot more disk space to 2TB, just make sure that your boot disk is separate and much smaller than 2TB. Put all your other space on a separate disk / volume and partition that separately. You can have a less-than 2TB boot disk as MBR and have the second data disk use GPT and far more usable space.

How to use more than 2TB on a hard disk drive in Microsoft Windows 64bit (convert to GUID GPT)
WARNING - I will NOT be held responsible for any damages the software(s) and methods shown in this video may cause to yours or someone else's computer, hardware, software, and/or data, including loss of use of such devices and/or loss of data and/or loss of profits from the resulting inability to use such devices and data. Any information or program you choose to put into use from this video is done AT YOUR OWN RISK. As a precaution, I recommend backing up any irrecoverable data before installing and using ANY new software(s), including those shown in this video. This video will show you how to fix this issue: Virtual Disk Manager Only the first 2TB are usable on large MBR disks. Cannot create partitions beyond the 2TB mark, nor convert the disk to dynamic. When Microsoft Windows formats, partitions, and prepares a hard disk drive for installation of the Microsoft Windows operating system, it tends to favour the MBR partition table format. The problem with the MBR partition table is that it supports up to a maximum of 2TB usable storage space, regardless of the way the user tries to create, partition, extend, or divvy up the volumes on said HDD. Any remaining storage space after the 2TB mark is unusable and is essentially wasted under the MBR partition table. If you want to use more than 2TB of hard disk drive storage space on any given harddisk, you have to convert your MBR partition table harddrive to GUID Partition Table (GPT). The problem is that not all motherboards and BIOS combinations support GUID Partition Table (GPT). In order to convert an MBR partition table HDD to a GUID Partition Table (GPT) HDD, all content stored on the HDD under the MBR partition table will be lost (it will be deleted). This is why before performing this task, the user should back up any irrecoverable data to another storage medium (such as USB flash key, DVD writable disc, cloud storage, etc). Furthermore, if after converting your HDD from the MBR partition table to the GUID Partition Table (GPT), you wish to install (and be able to boot) the Microsoft Windows operating system from said GUID Partition Table (GPT) HDD, your motherboard must also support the EFI System Partition. If your motherboard ONLY supports the GUID Partition Table (GPT) and not the EFI System Partition, you will still be able to format the drive to the GUID Partition Table (GPT) system, but you will not be able to install and house the Microsoft Windows operating system to this disk. You will be able to use this GUID Partition Table (GPT) hard drive as a secondary or slave hard drive for additional storage space, with another physical MBR partition table hard drive (any size amounting to or under 2TB) housing and booting the Microsoft Windows operating system as the master hard drive. The method shown in this video can be done using simply a 64 bit version of the Windows operating system (so no additional software needed), HOWEVER in order to do so you will also need either access to ANOTHER computer that has a 64 bit version of Windows installed that supports GUID Partition Table (GPT), OR you will have to install your 64 bit Windows operating system temporarily to ANOTHER hard disk drive in order to perform this conversion (this installation of Windows can be temporary and therefore does not have to be connected to the internet, nor activated with Microsoft.) This method should theoretically work with any 64bit version of Windows, so Windows 10 64bit, Windows 8.1 64bit, Windows 8 64bit, Windows 7 64bit, and Windows Vista 64bit. Under Disk Management in Windows, if the Convert to GPT Disk option is faded (greyed out) and inaccessible (Unallocated space with no option for New Simple Volume, New Spanned Volume nor New Striped Volume), you need to make this hard disk drive temporarily a slave hard disk drive (secondary HDD) to another hard drive that will boot up a 64 bit version of Windows (this can be a temporarily installed, unactivated version of Windows 64bit). When booting Windows 64bit from the HDD that is not the target hard drive to be converted, under Disk Management, identify the slave hard drive to be converted, then starting from the right and moving left, right-click on each volume on the target hard drive and select Delete Volume. Do this until all active partitions on the disk have been deleted and you are left with only one or more volumes of unallocated space on the disk. From there, again under Disk Management, right click on the drive identifier and select Convert to GPT Disk. This video will also show you how to enable the GUID Partition Table (GPT) and the EFI System Partition on an Asus Strix Z270F Gaming ACPI BIOS under the Boot\CSM (Compatibility Support Module) function, switching from the Legacy OPROM to the UEFI Driver (skip ahead or fast forward to 13:00 to find out how).

Fix cannot install Windows on dynamic disk
When you're going to install Windows on your computer or laptop, but you can't select the disk that you want. And if you click 'Show details', you see this message "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation." This means that you can't install Windows on the dynamic disk. * Note: This solution choose to clear any data and information on disk so if you have any important data on the disk, you have to move it or backup to other disk first. * Warning: If you did software RAID 0, or RAID 5 on the disk, converting the disk to basic will break the RAID and you will lose data on the RAID. To fix this issue, you have to convert the disk to basic disk. In this video, I will use the clean command in disk part program to clear any data and information on the disk. 1. On the page that you have to select a disk to install Windows, press Shift + F10 to open command prompt window. 2. Type 'diskpart' and press Enter. 3. Type 'list disk' and press Enter. This command displays all disks on the computer. 4. Select disk that you want. In this example, I will select the first disk (disk 0), so I type 'select disk 0'. And press Enter. 5. Then, type 'clean' and press Enter to delete any information on the disk. 6. Type 'exit' and press Enter. 7. Close the command prompt window. 8. Click 'Refresh' to update disk status. 9. Now you can create partition or choose the disk to install Windows. === References Basic and Dynamic Disks https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa363785(v=vs.85).aspx Standard RAID levels https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels

Windows Server 2008: the Disk Management GUI
A video from Jodo Institute that serves as a practical guide to Disk Management. Disk Management is a system utility on Windows Server 2008 for managing hard disks and the volumes or partitions that they contain. With Disk Management, you can initialize disks, create volumes, and format volumes with the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS file systems. Disk Management enables you to perform most disk-related tasks without restarting the system or interrupting users. Most configuration changes take effect immediately. In Windows Server 2008, Disk Management provides the same features you may already be familiar with, but also has some new features: • Simpler partition creation. When you right-click a volume, you can choose whether to create a basic, spanned, or striped partition directly from the menu. • Disk conversion options. When you add more than four partitions to a basic disk, you are prompted to convert the disk to dynamic or to the GUID partition table (GPT) style. • Extend and shrink partitions. You can extend and shrink partitions directly from the Windows interface.

How to Extend the C Drive in Windows Server 2012
Increase the size of your Boot drive, your C Drive. This can be done without a server reboot on Windows Server 2012. In this video, I increase the size of the C drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard. This server was installed on an 80GB partition (shows as 77GB). There was still 40+ GB free so I increase the size of the drive to 100GB. If you have any issues extending your C drive, go to Tools\Computer Management and then click Storage and then Disk Management. Look at the available space directly next to the C drive. It should say unallocated. If you have a D drive partition directly next to C, then you probably won't be able to extend the C Drive, instead try extending the D Drive.
