Action Words, Part 1 (Classroom Physical Activity Breaks)

09:11
Colleen Evans discusses and demonstrates a physical activity for a classroom, where children move to action words in a book with action words (such as "Barnyard Dance"). Grade Level: K4-2 To skip the introduction, go to 2:43 Addresses Physical Education Standard 1 ("Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.") Part 1 focuses on teaching students the words of the story. Part 2 has the teacher reading the students the story and the students act out the part of the story through movement. Parts 1 and 2 should be done on separate days. Shared as part of the Active Schools Initiative, which provides strategies to teachers and students for motivating students to be physically active outside of their physical education classes. http://dpi.wi.gov/sspw/physicaled.html Video produced by Milwaukee Public Schools with support from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. How To Use A Relay Race To Teach Vocabulary - Easy ESL Games

02:25
In this video, we show you how you can use a Relay Race to teach vocabulary in your classes. This game is really simple and we love it because of the teamwork required to play. Teamwork is a really easy way to get even you quietest students speaking in class because students tend to focus more on helping their teammates then on making gramatical errors. If you have any questions about how you can apply this game to your class, let us know in the comment section. - Kevin & Steve Make sure to find all of our materials on Teachers Pay Teachers: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Easy-Esl-Games For classroom games please check out our website: http://www.easyeslgames.com We made an album specifically designed for use in ESL/EFL classrooms. The Most Fun English Teaching (ESL) Game -- "Hot Seat"

04:28
A quick 4-minute description of how to play "Hot Seat" and a list of possible phrases to use! This game is great for a one-hour long lesson; it can also be used to teach Spanish and French, for example, to non-native speakers. To be honest it can be used to teach any language. My specialty is teaching using games. Some people underestimate the power of learning through fun; however, I embrace it to keep my students interested. This game, "Hot Seat" is one that must be played with your students. Practice English PHRASAL VERBS with this game

14:09
If you're learning English, you know how hard it is to learn phrasal verbs. It feels like there are thousands of them to remember! What if I told you I've found a way to incorporate learning phrasal verbs into a little game you can play with your friends? In this video, I will show you how to do it. Not only can my version of the game help you have a bit of fun while learning, but it will also challenge your memory and speed. It's easy to learn, and you can do it with a friend either in person or online. So watch the video, and challenge your friends to a game. You might even learn a few things from them! Take the quiz on this video: https://www.engvid.com/practice-english-phrasal-verbs-with-this-game Next, watch this video that will teach you my "WORD WEBS" method for learning 10x the amount of vocabulary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_aA-Hc74Ag&index=36&t=0s&list=PL1MxVBsQo85qbTHKgEgpCh7ytX9uyIsYY TRANSCRIPT Concentration. It is necessary to be really good at what you're doing. I wonder if we can play a game today. Hi. James from engVid. I was reading a book on concentration, and it dawned on me... And "to dawn on you" means I understood something that a lot of times when we play games, we concentrate, we really concentrate, we enjoy it and we learn a lot. And what I'm thinking today is that I would like to teach you a game that could help you concentrate and learn grammar easily and make it fun. I know that sounds like that doesn't make sense, it's like opposites, but bear with me. Stay with me and let's see where we go. Okay? So, Mr. E's playing a game. Some of you know this as tic-tac-toe, some of you know it as Xs and Os, and I'm going to use this game here to help you learn phrasal verbs. Very difficult subject for a lot of people, and today I hope to make it easy and fun. You will be able to do this by yourself and do it with a friend or family, or other students. You ready? Let's go to the board. Because as E says, he wins and you can, too. So, first I'm going to look at is preposition, and I'm going to pick one. Because when we play this game of Xs and Os, you can see the board is here, we're going to play and I'm going to teach you how to use this preposition with these verbs to create phrasal verbs. Now, one of the things we want to do is figure out what "up" means. You don't have to do this. You can just go in... You're on the internet, and you could look up these verbs, and see, you know, the phrasal verb "pull up", what does it mean? "Pick up", "close up", but today I'm going to help you with "up". We actually have a video with phrasal verbs on it, or many videos, where you can go and research and find out what these ones mean and other ones. And I believe I did one that gives you a method for "up", "down", and other phrasal verbs. Go check it out. www.engvid.com. Right? So: "up". "Up" can mean more. Okay? "Increase", "closer", "improve", "finish", or "end". So, when you know that "up" can mean these things, it means when we use these words here, we add "up", it will change the meaning of each word and give it a new meaning with the two words combined. For instance: "pull up". When we pull up it means to get closer, so when an English-speaking person says to you: "Please pull up a chair", it means get a chair and sit close with us. "Pull up" means closer, move closer. "Pick up". "Pick up" has several meanings but I'm not going to go into all of them. I'm going to give you one that you can use now. If you say: "I will pick you up at 4 o'clock or 5", it means I will come to a place you are at, meet you, and we will go together. A lot of times when someone says "pick you up" it means they will either have a taxi or a car, and they will take you, transport you with them. That's why they're picking you up, or they would say: "I would come to your house". "Close up", when you close up a store it means to shut, finish, and you end the work, so you close the door and go home. "We going to close up at about 6 o'clock." We will finish working about 6 o'clock. "Lift up", well, this pen, lift it up. We could say it more, and I should have added "move", right? Because when you lift something up, you take it from a lower position, you put it to a higher position. "Brighten up". "Brighten up" means to go bright, so we go from... Well, let's look here: Purple, this is brightened up. It's not clean, it's not perfect, but it's brighter. Right? So "brighten up" means to give more light. Or it could mean make happier. "He brightened up at the prospect of going out." He got happier. "Hold up" means to make wait. If you're saying: "What's holding up the train?" It means: "Why is the train staying here? Why is it waiting?" "Shot up", it means to go straight up. "The rock got shot up into the sky". "Clean up" means to clean. "Let's clean up the room." Let's clean it up, make it better. In this case, improve the condition of the room. "Take up" means review. […]

⭐️Try Grammarly Grammar Checker - it's FREE! https://www.grammarly.com/mmmenglish SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT is one of the most common mistakes that English learners make! It's so easy to forget that the verb form in English sentences changes, depending on the subject! - I AM hungry... - She IS thirsty... - They ARE fighting... - We HAVE been travelling - It HAS been so long. - She DOESN'T know... - You DON'T know... - They LIKE to travel. - She LIKES to travel. This English lesson will help you to review subject-verb agreement rules and fix your English grammar mistakes! I will also explain how these rules work in more complicated sentences. For example: sentences where the subject is a noun phrase, or where the subject and the verb are separated by a relative clause. Classroom English: Vocabulary & Expressions for Students

09:36
http://www.engvid.com Are you the new student in your English class? Do you understand what your teacher is saying? In this lesson, we will go over some of the vocabulary, expressions, and questions that you might hear in class. What do you say if they are speaking too fast or if you didn't hear? It can be stressful to ask questions, but after this lesson, you will be more confident participating and interacting with your teacher and classmates. Take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/classroom-english/ TRANSCRIPT: Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson comes as a request, because I know that there are actually quite a few of you who are teachers of English, and you wanted to know some classroom English. So, today, we're going to look at classroom English. This is more for beginners, especially people who have just joined an English class, an ESL class, EFL class, etc. and you're starting to get used to the classroom environment, and you're not exactly sure what the teacher is saying, what you should say, etc. We're going to start with the teachers. What do teachers say that you need to understand? Okay? [Clears throat] Excuse me. First, the teacher will take attendance, or the teacher will take roll call. Sorry, these are two separate words, "roll call". Basically, they want to know who is here and who is not here. Okay? So, if a student is in the class, he or she is present. So, if the teacher says: -"Bill?" -"Present." -"Mary?" -"Present." -"Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?" Bueller is absent. He or she is not in the class. So, "absent", not here. "Present", here. If the teacher has finished with attendance and starts to teach the class, and a student comes in then, that student is late. And they get a little check. Too many lates, you get into trouble. Now, you could be absent, but you can have an excused absent, means that you have a note from your parents, from your doctor, from your boss, or the teacher just knows that you're not coming today and it's okay; it's excused. Now, the teacher will give you commands. He or she will tell you to do things. Okay? So, it's very important that you understand what to do. If a teacher says: "Put up your hand", or: "Raise your hand to ask a question, to make a comment, to ask to go to the bathroom", put up your hand. Raise your hand. Don't speak out. Because if everybody speaks out, it's just noise. Put up your hand, ask your question, get your answer. Okay? Then, the teacher will ask you: "Take out your notebooks. Take out your pens. Take out your earphones." Basically, get them ready, we are going to use them. Okay. "Take your seats." Basically means sit down, sit. Okay? So, he's trying to get organized, or she is trying to get organized. Next, they'll say: "Take out your book. Turn to page 37." Means open your book, page 37, let's start reading, working, etc. Now, if the teacher wants you to do things, but not alone... For example, if you're doing math, yeah, you do it alone no problem. If you're doing ESL, the teacher will want you to work in pairs. It means two people together, so you can speak. "Work in groups", means get into a few people together; three, four, five. If he wants a specific number, he will say: "Get into groups of", or: "Work in groups of three." So, you find your two friends, three sit together, do the exercise. Now, if the teacher... As everybody's talking, the teacher wants everybody be quiet and listen to one student, he will say or she will say: "Please pay attention to Jack. Jack is going to speak. Everybody, please pay attention to Jack." Or if you're doing exercise, if the teacher wants you to be careful about one word or one grammar structure: "Pay attention to the independent clause." Means be very focused, be aware. Okay? So, these are the basic things you need to know what... That your teacher will say. Now, you're the student, you have questions or you don't understand something, what are you going to say or what are you going to ask?

2 fun new ways to learn English vocabulary

10:49
Learning a new language is difficult and boring. Every student learns differently, and it's important to find a study method that is right for YOU. I want to put the fun back into studying English with two methods that are fun and which make learning easier and quicker! In this lesson, I will teach you how to make connections between words in order to remember them more easily. I will also reveal my hidden poet talents, so you don't want to miss this one! http://www.engvid.com/2-fun-new-ways-to-learn-english-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Yeah, that was fun. I'm looking forward to hearing that from you later. Hi. James from engVid. In this video what I would like to do is help you work on vocabulary. I want to make it fun, because when things are fun, you work harder and you learn more. And today's lesson, I'm going to teach you two ways to not only just remember vocabulary, but learn how to use vocabulary in a way that we use it, and you will really understand it, and... Heck, it's fun. You're just going to have fun doing it. I'm sure you will. All right? It's a little bit creative. So, let's go to the board. Simple lesson. Here we go. Two ways to have fun with language. Not just language, but vocabulary. Ways that you may not be studying in class, we're going to do here today. The first one I want to talk to you about is fill in the gap. Huh? "A gap" means a space, there's a space between something. So, here's my hands, in between my hands is a gap. Okay? You have a gap between your eyes. One eye, one eye, space. In this case, you see I've got this: "tree __________ chair". Now, fill in the gap doesn't mean just one word. It's a couple of ways you can do this. In this particular game, we're going to take two vocabulary words, "tree", and take another one, "chair", and they're kind of a little obvious to make it easy for you, but what I want you to do is one of two things. The first thing we can do is use x words. What I mean by that is you could say: "I want to use five words, and I want to go from 'tree' to 'chair'." Or: "I want to use three words from 'tree' to 'chair'" or two. Huh? Well, okay. How do I get from "tree"? Okay. "Tree", "cut". You cut the tree down, right? "Lumber". Lumber you make into wood you can use. Let's see. "Carpenter". Find a carpenter. "Craft". "Craft" means make. You're like: "What?" These... All these words... And then I can say: "Furniture". Okay? Okay, furniture. "Chair", so if I have a tree, I cut it down and make it into lumber, I take it to a carpenter, he crafts it into a chair. Five words from A to B. So, one game is tell yourself: "I want to go from five... One word to another word, and I want five words to get there." And you can challenge yourself; maybe go from three words. Right? Or make 10 words. You can use it to describe something. How many words you can use to describe a certain thing. Right? "I have this word, and I want to go to this word. How many words does it take me to get there?" What this does is it teaches you relationship between words, and that also can teach you nouns and verbs, and how they function together. Or, we say "syntax", right? So, start at A, say: "I want to use five words to get there." This is a great word to do with a friend. You can say: "Okay, we're going to do 'tree' and 'chair', you need to do five words that make sense to go from 'tree' to 'chair'", and put a clock on for five minutes. You go, and she goes, you write together and see what words you get. Compare, check them out. "Why did you choose this, and why does this word...? What does this word mean?" Right? So, now, you're not just writing words in a book and saying: "This word means this." You're: "What does it mean? How do I use it? How would other people use it? How would other people think?" Right? Yeah. See? That's fun by yourself or with a friend. Okay, listen, the second way to play this game is: How many words to the answer? What? Well, we can pick up two random words, two, like... I have "chair"... "Tree" and "chair", we could have put "chair" and "moon". Now the game gets a little bit more interesting. Right? "Chair" and "moon". How many words does it get me to go from "chair" to "moon"? Now, you might say: "That's impossible. They have nothing to do with each other." I could say, "Listen, the chair in my living room"-"living room" is a noun-"sits"-which is a verb-"close to the big bay window where I can see the moon at night." How many words did it take me to get from "chair" to "moon"? So, it's playing with words, being creative.

This session outlined game design principles for creating games for change. The fundamental approach requires a thoughtful pairing of game verbs to intended social action. The session was a game design primer in creating games that offer effective play rhetoric. Applying the heuristics of successful game design by the presenter and others, this session is supported by nearly a decade's worth of experience teaching game design. No more mistakes with MODALS! 3 Easy Rules

09:57
Do modals confuse you? Are you unsure how to use the words can, could, may, might, should, ought, must, have to, shall, will, or would? Watch this lesson and learn three easy rules to use modals correctly in English, once and for all! TEST YOURSELF WITH THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/modals-3-easy-rules/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. In this lesson you'll learn how to use modal verbs properly, and how to avoid making the most common mistakes that students sometimes make when using these special helping verbs. Now, even though modal verbs doesn't sound that exciting, when you see what they are you'll realize that we use these verbs all the time, and so you need to know how to use them correctly. Right? Okay. So, let's look at what modal verbs are. So, these are words that express different kinds of things. For example, they might express ability, possibility, permission, obligation. Okay? And some other things like that. And they behave differently from regular verbs, and that's why they're sometimes a little bit confusing. But let's look at some examples of what modal verbs are. "Can", "could", "may", "might", "should", "ought to", "must", "have to", "will", "shall", and "would". Okay? These are the most common ones. All right. So, I'm going to give you now three basic rules that you can follow to avoid most of the mistakes that are usually made with the modal verbs. Okay? So, first of all, make sure to use the modal verb as is. That means don't change it in the present, or the past, or the future. For example, we can say: "He can swim." This is a correct sentence. It would be wrong to say: "He cans swim." Because, here, the student put an extra "s" there. All right? And we don't need to change that modal verb ever. Okay? All right. Second, use the base form of the verb after a modal. Don't use "to". What do I mean by that? For example, you should say: "He might join us." Not: "He might to join us." Okay? This is a really common error, so make sure you don't make this one. So don't use the full infinitive to join after a word like "might". Just use the base form of the verb, which is: "join". "He might join us.", "He could join us.", "He should join us.", "He must join us." and so on, without "to". All right? Very good. Now, the next point is if you need to, say, use the modal verb in the negative form, then just use "not" after the modal. All right? Don't add any extra words most the time; there's one little exception, I'll explain that to you, but for most of them, don't use words like: "don't", or "doesn't", or "isn't", "aren't", "wasn't", "won't". Okay? So, with most of these modal verbs just say "not". For example: "You should not smoke." Not: "You don't should smoke." All right? So, here the student knows and learned all these lovely words: "don't", "doesn't", "isn't", "aren't", all that and try to use it when using the modal verb, but that's wrong. Okay? So, the only exception is with the verb... With the modal verb "have to", there if you want to make it negative, you need to say: "You don't have to do this", okay? But with the other ones, we just say: "You cannot", "You could not", "You may not", "You might not", "You should not", "You ought not to", okay? So there you have to be careful where to place it. "You must not", this one I told you is an exception. "You will not", "You shall not", and "You would not". Okay? And the other thing to keep in mind when you're using this word and "not", this is a really common mistake, so the important thing to remember: This actually becomes one word. Okay? Only in that case. You don't say... You say: "cannot", but it's actually one word. All right? Most of the time, almost always "not" is a separate word with all of the modal verbs. But not with "can". With "can" it actually becomes one word: "I cannot arrive"-okay?-"on time", like that. Okay? So, now that you've got these basic rules and you've understood how it works, let's do some practice to see how well you've understood. Okay, so let's get started with our exercises. Now, the rules are written at the top just in case you didn't remember them exactly. First one, remember use it as it is, don't change the modal verb. Second one, use with the base verb. Don't use the full infinitive "to" something. And the last one: Use "not" after the modals when it's negative. Okay? All right. Try to keep those in mind, but most of all let's look at the actual examples and you tell me what's wrong with them. There is something wrong with each and every one of these sentences. Okay. Number one: "You must to finish your homework. You must to finish your homework." What's wrong there? What did the person do wrong? They added "to". All right? This was our second rule. Right? You cannot use "to".
