Steam Engine History

09:16
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Since the late 1700s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first applications were removing water from mines. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicles such as traction engines and the railway locomotives which are commonly just called steam engines outside America. The stationary steam engine was a key component of the Industrial Revolution, allowing factories to locate where water power was unavailable. Today steam turbines generate about 90% of the electric power in the United States using a variety of heat sources. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated into steam in a boiler until it reaches a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on steam supplied from a separate boiler. Steam Trains Galore!

28:18
All aboard! Come along for a look at several steam trains running in the western United States! Steam Trains Galore is a 28 minute long video that features numerous shots of all sorts of different steam trains. You will see everything from small park trains to the big steam trains that make occasional runs on the main line today. This video is not narrated and there are no captions on any of the video clips, so if there are any questions about where some of these videos were filmed, I'd be happy to answer them. I'm trying to increase the variety of videos I have on my page, so this video is geared towards a different (younger) audience. This is to get a better sense as to what types of videos are the most popular. If this is well received, I will post more like it in the future. So, that said, please leave feedback. Thank you!

How To Fire Up a Steam Locomotive [4K]

37:32
•A step-by-step video, with descriptions, on how to fire up a coal-burning steam locomotive. The entire 6 - 7 hour process was shortened down to ~37 minutes in this video to highlight most of the main points. •The locomotive seen in the video is Denver and Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) mikado (2-8-2) #491, one of the largest narrow gauge locomotives ever created. It now runs at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. It has ~37,100 pounds of tractive effort, and weighs ~150 tons or ~302,000 pounds. It was built in 1928 by the D&RGW Burnham shops in Denver, Colorado using the boiler off of a standard gauge D&RGW 2-8-0. #491 is a pristine example of a locomotive perfectly suited for rugged, mountain climbing work. •Copyright 2017 Jeff Berrier All Rights Reserved

Big Steam Engine

03:39
Tandem compound textile mill engine at Queen Street Mill Textile Museum in Burnley, Lancashire, UK. "Peace" as this engine is affectionately named, is but one of a number of magnificent engines long retired, but now preserved, throughout the UK. Originally, this engine was named Prudence after the first engineers wife. The engine was renamed after the first world war, in memory of fallen co-workers who died fighting in France. Their sacrifice devastated families and working communities everywhere. This largely complete textile museum is well worth a visit and should you go, you will be hosted by friendly, highly knowledgeable staff. It is simply amazing to learn all the processes involved in spinning and weaving cotton; plan on spending at least half a day here! The steam engine alone is well worth the visit, but there is so much more to see & do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia; Queen Street Mill is in Harle Syke, a suburb to the north-east of Burnley, Lancashire. It was built in 1894 for The Queen Street Manufacturing Company. It closed on 12 March 1982 and was mothballed. It was taken over by Burnley Borough Council who maintained it as a museum, and then in the 1990s passed to Lancashire Museums and is unique as the worlds only surviving steam driven weaving shed. It received an Engineering Heritage Award in November 2010. It is open for visitors and still does weaving demonstrations. Architecture The mill was of four storey construction, with a large single storey weaving shed. After the fire in 1918 it was remodelled into a single storey building, space being taken from the weaving sheds for a new preparation area. On closure in 1982 it was reconfigured by Burnley Council, the weaving shed was partitioned, about a third being used for rentable industrial units, and a similar area being used for visitor facilities. The 37 metres (121 ft) chimney and the 60m X 25m lodge lay to the south. The boiler house, the engine house and chimney are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. As originally built the weaving shed was about 170 metres (560 ft)by 160 metres (520 ft), with the typical north facing roof lights (windows) giving natural light, the shed housed 990 looms. On the Queen Street side was the boiler room and engine house, and the four storey warehouse. The ground floor was the weft department, the first floor was offices, the cloth warehouse and temporary storage beams, the second floor was the winding and beaming department for beaming and drawing in, and the third floor was the preparation department for tape sizing. After the fire the ground floor of the frontage was rebuilt and used for winding and preparation, 100 looms were removed and part of the Harrison Street end of the shed became the new warehouse. Rowland Kippax who worked there however reported "there were now 1040 looms, there were nine tacklers looking after 130 looms each". Power Steam is raised by two Lancashire boilers built by Tinker, Shenton & Co, Hyde. The first was installed in 1894, and the second in 1901, when a 120 tube Greens Economiser was fitted. Now feed water is supplied by a Weir pump fitted in 1956, Both boilers were stoked manually, though secondhand Proctor automatic stokers were fitted in 1962. Boiler No.1 had the Shovel type and the coking type were fitted to No.2 Today the manually stoked 1901 boiler is the only one used.Coal was obtained locally from Bank Hall Pit but now with pollution controls being stricter it has to be imported. At its peak it burnt 6 tonnes a day, but now uses only 10 tonnes a month. The steam raised to 100 psi in the boiler house, drives the original tandem compound horizontal stationary steam engine. The high pressure cylinder (HP) is 16 inches (41 cm) and the low pressure (LP) 32 inches (81 cm). It uses Corliss valves. The engine drives a 14 feet (4.3 m) flywheel running at 68 rpm. The 500 horsepower (370 kW) engine was built and installed by William Roberts of Nelson in 1895. It has never been moved from this location and runs perfectly true. Power is taken from the crankshaft by a series of directly driven line shafts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music: Invincible Force, bought from jewelbeat.com and used under licence.
Working Model of Stephenson's STEAM ENGINE made of GLASS ! Rare!

02:17
Highlights: * The crankshaft is glass. The piston is glass. The counterweight that makes the wheel spin evenly is glass. Imagine that everything is made out of glass. * There are no sealants used. All is accomplished by a perfectly snug fit. The gap between the piston and its compartment is so small, that the water that condensates from the steam seals it shut! * Notice the elaborate excessive steam exhaust system next to the piston. * The piston is the most arduous part to make due to to extreme level of precision needed. Its parts have to be so accurate that no machinery is of use here. The piston and its cylinder must be hand sanded to perfection, and they are very likely to crack in the process! On average, three out of four crack. This Model of Stephenson's Steam Engine was made in 2008 by master glassblower Michal Zahradník. Audio: The few seconds of electric guitar at the beginning and the end were sampled from Ivan Chew's track Dollheads (http://ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/25202) licenced under CC BY 3.0 (href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/).

1904 #4 Jewell Steam Engine Evaluation

27:26
#4 Jewell Automatic Cutoff Steam Engine. On 80 pounds steam pressure at the engine, it is rated at 15HP at 220 RPM and 18HP at 280 RPM. Rites Patent Governor. Some Frank M. Rites steam engine patents are available from Google Patents. The governor only has one moving part, the bow-tie shaped iron casting. It has a pivot point that is offset from the center line of the casting. When in motion the forces tend to rotate the governor weight so it is is close to the center of mass. A spring opposes the action and such forces are balance when the governed speed is reached. If more load is applied the flywheel tends to slow down. The governor weight will tend to overtake the flywheel and changes the position of the valve eccentric which admits steam longer in the cylinder. The earliest catalog information I have been able to find for the Jewell line of horizontal steam engines is 1908. Not much is known who actually made these. Some internet antique machinery forum discussion s have suggested it was a company named Clark Machinery at location unknown. If you go by the flute styling of the cast iron cylinder jacket plates, it can be concluded they also made conventional throttle governed engines as well. I have a 5X8 horizontal engine that has the exact same styling on its jacket cover plates. This engine has stamped on its steam chest 1904 and shop number 850. It was acquired it in 2004 or 2005. It supposedly was used in a Louisana sugar mill. As I remember it was not stuck but has spent its post-industrial life outdoors. Covered in mold, moss and lichens it was a mess. I did run on air but a 1/4" air hose did not prove much. In 2006 a steam test was made using a 3/4" steam hose. This proved much the same as the air test. Having never worked with an automatic cutoff engine I did not know what to expect. It ran and it reached a governed speed. The exhaust had a rather wheezy or asthmatic sound to it. Little more was done for the next 11 years except to oil it and occasionally rotate the flywheel. In November 2017 the engine was connected to the Brownell boiler seen in previous videos using a 1-1/2" steam hose which is the max steam outlet size of the boiler. New to the Brownell boiler is a cover to the smoke stack. This video is compiled from three days of testing in November 2017 to evaluate the condition of the engine. Video 13.

Starting The Big Red Corliss Steam Engine

07:32
HD 720p The Big Red Corliss Steam Engine is one of the the stars of London's Science Museum. This cross compound mill engine, equipped with Corliss valve gear both on the high and low pressure side, drove up to 1700 power looms at the Finchley View Mill, Harle Syke near Burnley in Lancashire from 1903 to 1970. The looms got their power by a complicated line shafting system in each working hall of the mill. The engine, System Taylor, was built for the mill in 1903 by Burnley Ironworks. The restoration and installation in the Science Museum was done in 1979 by Riley & Son Ltd, Lancashire (see the plaque in my video at 5:32). The engine does 700 hp at a high-steam pressure of 160 psi (11 bar). The expanded steam of the high pressure cylinder is used in the low pressure cylinder and afterwards in the condenser. From there the hot condensed water is pumped back into the boiler (and energy saved). It was really interesting to see, how the engine is started and shut down and I want to say special thanks to the volunteers Mr. Cadby and Mr. Lincoln, who did support my filming in the best way.

How Do Steam Locomotives Work - Steam Engines Explained

03:36
This was probably one of the hardest things to animate, especially the rods and cranks. With more time I would've been able to fully and properly animate them - but, alas. Time was my enemy. The video explains how steam locomotives use a fuel (usually coal) to start a fire and get water boiling, in order to create steam, which drives the reciprocating piston. Much like a piston in your car, although there there's one tiny "explosion" that happens when the piston is on the top of the stroke (along with a few other pistons). In reciprocating steam engines, pistons get pushed and pushed, meaning: They get pushed by pressurised steam from both sides, alternating (obviously). Using this back-and-forth motion, using a smart connection to the drive wheel - offsetting it from the center - you can get that wheel to move. And thus, move the train (and whatever it's pulling). There are different types of steam engine, the most popular one (and the one used in most steam locomotives) is the reciprocating piston engine. A piston moves left and right, pushed by (super)heated steam. This directly drives the wheels. A few things were skipped in the animation, such as the steam whistle or how the safety valve works. I also left out the superheater, because of time constraints. Basically, what a superheater does, is run the steam entering the main steam pipe and rerouting it passed the firetubes, thus further heating the steam. This to make absolutely sure the water in the steam is too hot to condens in the pistons. Of course there is more to the story of locomotives and trains than just how they work, the whole idea of moving cargo by train is interesting. As is the rules of the road - or rail, rather - that apply. 🌏🌍🌎 Care to add your own language in subtitles? http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?v=nd2Ii4OGQ4k&ref=share Awesome: ▶▶ Become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyD3sEJLC52UzR1wjtclsPw/?sub_confirmation=1 Get in touch: ▶ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Reddit: http://www.facebook.com/u/sebasvandenbrink ▶ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/sebvandenbrink ▶ Web: https://sebvandenbrink.com/ Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_engine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_locomotive_components https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebox_(steam_engine)

The Steam Engine ~ James Watt

14:29
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Using boiling water to produce mechanical motion goes back over 2000 years, but early devices were not practical. The Spanish inventor Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont patented in 1606 the first steam engine. In 1698 Thomas Savery patented a steam pump that used steam in direct contact with the water being pumped. Savery's steam pump used condensing steam to create a vacuum and draw water into a chamber, and then applied pressurized steam to further pump the water. Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine was the first commercial true steam engine using a piston, and was used in 1712 for pumping in a mine. James Watt,(30 January 1736 (19 January 1736 OS) – 25 August 1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world.

http://www.mekanizmalar.com/menu_thermodynamic.html This video is dedicated to the resurrection of the Santa Fe Steam Locomotive 3463. Sustainable Rail International, working with the University of Minnesota, has designed a steam locomotive which on paper is much better than the diesel-electric hybrid locomotives. To prove their claim they are salvaging the 3463 which will reach 130 mph when it is completed. Here is the link to CSR web page. http://www.csrail.org/index.php/the-plan

OLD STEAM POWERED MACHINE SHOP 43 Designing a steam engine slide valve

44:23
#43 in a series of videos of my steam powered machine shop that demonstrates what a typical job shop of the 1920s might have been like. Today calculations are made to design a "D" slide valve for an early 1900's steam engine that I have been rebuilding in the shop. Machine work is started in the cast iron block which will be the valve. This type of work was done in thousands of small shops across the country 100 years ago. Questions, comments and discussion about steam power, old machine shop work, line shaft belt drives, etc. are always welcome here. Thanks for watching....Dave

Model Railroading 101 Ep. 6 Steam Engines For Beginners

34:01
Please support TSG Multimedia on Patreon! www.patreon.com/tsgmultimedia #trains #Steam #ModelRailroading101 #railroads Welcome back to class! In this episode of MR101 we take a look at steam locomotives. We discuss some information about how they work, and there is also a fairly detailed look at several types of locomotives - even tank engines and geared locos. Find out what makes them move, how to tell what you are looking at, why a tank engine does not need a tender, and why a tender is called a tender instead of something else. A great primer for beginners, and a great reminder for someone with a little more experience. You might learn something new that you didn't already know! Large Stirling Engine Free Energy from the Sun

05:17
Free solar energy from the sun and a large Fresnel lens is focused on the Stirling Engine displacer to produce flywheel movement. http://greenpowerscience.com/ Stirling Engines are heat engines that can operate from Solar concentrated sunlight. Robert Stirling invented the Stirling Engine and this video explais various solar applications. Solar Scorcher is a slang for a solar lens. Green Energy Science. http://greenpowerscience.com/ A Stirling engine is a heat engine operating by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. Or more specifically, a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine with a permanently gaseous working fluid, where closed-cycle is defined as a thermodynamic system in which the working fluid is permanently contained within the system, and regenerative describes the use of a specific type of internal heat exchanger and thermal store, known as the regenerator. It is the inclusion of a regenerator that differentiates the Stirling engine from other closed cycle hot air engines. Originally conceived in 1816 as an industrial prime mover to rival the steam engine, its practical use was largely confined to low-power domestic applications for over a century. The Stirling engine is noted for its high efficiency compared to steam engines,[4] quiet operation, and the ease with which it can use almost any heat source. This compatibility with alternative and renewable energy sources has become increasingly significant as the price of conventional fuels rises, and also in light of concerns such as peak oil and climate change. This engine is currently exciting interest as the core component of micro combined heat and power (CHP) units, in which it is more efficient and safer than a comparable steam engine.

The Surprising Future of Steam Power | Robert Green | TEDxMissionViejo

18:00
Robert is devoted full time to developing inventions, writing and applying for patents on a wood-working system, a windmill, a rotary conversion device and a steam engine (six patents). Here he shares his idea about how the Electrical Grid and be replaced with a simple steam engine, that not only creates clean energy but saves dramatically on energy waste. At age 15, he hitchhiked to Chicago to begin a new life on his own. Mechanical skills learned on the farm provided the means to stay off the streets and utilize that knowledge. In 1964 he founded Turin Bicycle Company with smoke-damaged bicycles he obtained from a warehouse fire. The business flourished and Robert sold it the following year. The next few years were spent traveling and living in Europe. After returning to the US, he started a new business- Green Construction Company. With industrial machinery purchased from failed factories, Robert created custom cabinetry, furniture and architectural pieces as well as sculpture. He learned many new skills and became professional in carpentry, joinery/cabinetry, furniture design electrical, plumbing, machining, mechanics, metal casting, jewelry making, masonry, tile setting, welding, fine art (sculpting, painting, drafting, cartooning and drawing) as well as mechanical engineering, patent writing, and business management. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
