Review: Skullgirls 2nd Encore (PS Vita & PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Skullgirls 2nd Encore, available now on PS Vita and PlayStation 4. By mixing Japanese anime with American animation circa 1940, Skullgirls 2nd Encore is one of the best looking fighting games on the market. This brand new PS Vita release is bursting with memorable characters, over-the-top action and online play against console opponents. Unfortunately, this port is marred by occasionally blurry graphics. Imperfections aside, Lab Zero has developed a stylish fighting game that is good both at home and on the go. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: DOGOS (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews DOGOS, available on PlayStation 4 on September 6 and Xbox One and Steam on September 7. While there's still room for improvement, it's clear that OPQAM is headed in the right direction. DOGOS is an action-packed game that not only looks a lot better than Project Root, but is also more exciting and easier to get into. The fact that it doesn't play like most traditional shoot-em-ups helps set it apart from the pack, even when it fails to capitalize on its uniqueness. It's not always original and there are still some issues I would like to see the developers iron out, but DOGOS is yet another fun shooter for modern consoles. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Axiom Verge (PlayStation 4 & PS Vita) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Axiom Verge for the PlayStation 4. In a generation bursting with neo-retro action games, Axiom Verge stands out as one of the best. This could have been a simple one-note love letter to the cartridge games of yesteryear, but instead it exceeds expectations and even manages to bring a few new ideas to the mix. Axiom Verge is a stunner that is every bit as good as the games that inspired it. More reviews at: http://www.defunctgames.com Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DefunctGames

Review: Defunct (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Defunct, available January 29 on Steam. Although short, Defunct is a charming new platformer with a likable hero and intriguing mechanics. The world is both fun to traverse and visually stimulating. Best of all, it's actually fun. That's more than I can say about Sonic the Hedgehog's recent outings. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Phoning Home (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Phoning Home from Ion Lands, available now on Steam. If you're able to look beyond some baffling technical issues and are willing to save frequently, you'll find an incredible adventure with two of the best new characters of the year. The alien world they explore is full of surprises and the mystery is genuinely intriguing, especially as you learn more about the people who used to inhabit the planet. Phoning Home is only a patch or two away from being a game I truly love. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Aven Colony (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Aven Colony by Mothership Entertainment, available July 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Aven Colony is a game that manages to scratch that SimCity itch while still offering something new. This game is not only incredibly easy to learn and fun to play, but it's quick and painless with a controller. As somebody who went in a bit skeptical, I'm thoroughly impressed by the effortless execution and lengthy adventure. There are a few performance issues here and there, but don't let that keep you from setting up your own colony on Aven Prime. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Late Shift (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Late Shift by Wales Interactive, available April 18 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. While nowhere near as good as The Bunker, I like that Wales Interactive is keeping the full-motion video genre alive with games like Late Shift. This crime thriller isn't especially original and you probably won't want to play it more than a few times, but it has an attractive price and good production values. I hope they keep making games like this, but maybe next time make the interactive movie a little more, well, interactive. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Dragon's Crown Pro (PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Dragon's Crown Pro by Vanillaware, available May 15 on PlayStation 4. Even though it doesn't have much in the way of new content, Dragon's Crown Pro shines on the PlayStation 4. This is a brawler that evolves the genre in a lot of important ways, and the gorgeous visuals haven't aged a day. Fans who already own the game on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita may not see much reason to upgrade, but if you're into old school brawlers and somehow missed out on the original release, then Dragon's Crown Pro is an absolute must-play. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Lust for Darkness (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Lust for Darkness by Movie Games, available June 12 on PC. While Lust for Darkness manages to provide a few genuinely unnerving moments, I was ultimately disappointed by the straight-forward gameplay, simple puzzles and short run time. It's the kind of game that starts out promising enough, but gradually gets less interesting the more you uncover. The result is a horror game with a few scary scenes that don't add up to much. Review: Night Trap - 25th Anniversary Edition (PlayStation 4 & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition, available August 15 on PlayStation 4 and Steam. With incredible bonus features, upgraded graphics and an easier to use interface, Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition is the ultimate version of the game. While some may question full-motion video's place in history, this package makes a strong case for why Night Trap (and the genre in general) was important. Best of all, the many enhancements actually made me enjoy the game more than I did a quarter century ago. This is the perfect way to honor one of gaming's most misunderstood classics. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Coma - Recut (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Coma: Recut by Devespresso Games, available September 19 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. While a little repetitive at times, The Coma: Recut is a mostly successful survival horror game with a twisted story and a spooky setting. I like the lead character and the quest he goes on, even if he has to run from his murderous teacher a few too many times. Who knew that The Coma: Recut would be the year's best Friday the 13th game? http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Deadly Tower of Monsters (PlayStation 4 & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Deadly Tower of Monsters, out this week on PlayStation 4 and Steam. Although the gameplay is a bit repetitive and the camera controls are non-existent, The Deadly Tower of Monsters proves to be worth your time for the style and story alone. I laughed from beginning to end and was wowed by the late game plot twists. If you grew up loving cheesy B-rate movies, then there's a lot to like in Dick Starspeed's video game debut. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (PlayStation 4 & Xbox One)
While not the next-generation Final Fantasy game fans are anxiously waiting for, Type-0 is a fun action/adventure with a lot of compelling ideas. There's enough variety in the gameplay to keep the combat fresh for dozens of hours, and the story is surprisingly emotional for a political thriller. Sadly, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is held back by its handheld roots, but don't let that keep you from discovering this oddity. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human, out January 19 on Steam. Part Shadow of the Colossus and Super Metroid, this shoot-em-up takes players deep into the future to experience what's left of Earth. With its melancholy atmosphere, retro presentation and intense boss fights, I found a lot to love in The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human. This is something special that needs to be played as soon as possible. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: AER - Memories of Old (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews AER: Memories of Old by Daedalic Entertainment, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. From the moment I first laid eyes on the Land of Gods, I knew I wanted to spend as much time as possible flying through the skies and exploring the ruins. The rest of the game is fun, but can't stack up against that initial impression. The problem is that it's too short, doesn't have enough to do and is filled with puzzles that are much too easy. AER: Memories of Old is good, but doesn't fly as high as it should have. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: 2Dark (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews 2Dark by Gloomywood, available March 10 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. While far from perfect, I'm glad I saw 2Dark through to the end. I like a lot of the stealth elements and puzzle solving, and I even got into its gruesome story. With its dark subject matter and violence towards children, I can see how this might not be for everybody. This is not a bright and cheerful story, and horror fans will probably get a kick out of some of the twists and turns. There are some interesting ideas in 2Dark that are never fully realized. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Teslagrad (PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 3)
Defunct Games reviews Teslagrad, out now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Teslagrad is a clever puzzle platformer with a cool conceit and narrative device. Players use electromagnetic power to move obstacles and beat challenging bosses. The story is told entirely through exploration and puppet shows, forcing players to form their own conclusions. The result is a delightful adventure that is brought down by imprecise controls. For more reviews: http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Flinthook (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Flinthook by Tribute Games, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Despite being incredibly difficult at times, I still had a lot of fun blasting my way through the solar system. A lot of this comes down to the grappling hook mechanics, which is a real joy to use and will take some time to master. I also love the old school visuals, run 'n gun action and all the stuff you can collect from level to level. Even when I suffered a horrible death, I still wanted to jump back in and grab more booty. That's not something I can say about a lot of roguelikes. While I wish the aiming was more precise and the levels a little more diverse, I'm all but certain you'll have a great time kicking alien butt in Flinthook. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Phantom Breaker - Battle Grounds Overdrive (PlayStation 4)
Defunct Games reviews Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Overdrive, out now on PlayStation 4. Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds won't win over gamers sick of 2D brawlers, but its fast-paced gameplay and fun multiplayer mode make it a cut above the rest. With all kinds of characters to level up, a cool art style and deep gameplay, this is one PlayStation 4 beat-em-up worth fighting for.

Review: Legend of Kay Anniversary (PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Steam, Wii U, etc.)
Defunct Games reviews Legend of Kay Anniversary, out this week on PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Wii U and Steam. Legend of Kay Anniversary offers upgraded graphics and sound, but outdated gameplay and voice acting. It's a cute story about a samurai cat who gets caught up in a number of mildly interesting adventures. It may not be a must-play experience, but Legend of Kay Anniversary is bound to please fans that fell in love with the game on the PlayStation 2. http://www.defunctgames.com

The Top 10 Most Ridiculous Things Said in Last Alert
Welcome to Great Moments in Bad Acting, your weekly history lesson about terrible voice acting. Join us as we spend the next two months making fun of some of the best bad acting ever committed to a video game. We'll be looking at crummy full-motion video games, overhead shooters, survival horror and even light gun shooters. All in an attempt to honor some of the hammiest acting you've ever heard. Today we're looking at Last Alert, the early generation TurboGrafx-CD game. The only thing keeping this from being just another Commando rip-off was the animated cinemas, rockin' soundtrack and voice acting. Oh that voice acting. Who needs actors when you can get the building janitor and secretary to deliver half-baked lines? See for yourself when you watch The 10 Most Ridiculous Things Said in Last Alert! Next Week: Ever wonder why Link stays so quiet in all of his games? Next week we'll pull back the curtain and show you why. Review: Mushihimesama (Steam)
Defunct Games reviews Mushihimesama, out this week on Steam. Mushihimesama is Cave at the top of their game. This action-packed shoot-em-up offers stylish visuals, a killer soundtrack and a unique scoring system. It's also filled with some of the year's nastiest insect-inspired bosses. This is a bullet hell shooter that manages to be both fair and forgiving, a rare combination in this style of game. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Grandia II Anniversary Edition (Steam)
Defunct Games reviews Grandia II: Anniversary Edition, out this week on Steam. While not as flashy as Final Fantasy or as original as Skies of Arcadia, this updated re-release is a testament to how much fun a well-crafted turn-based role-playing game can be. Grandia II: Anniversary Collection improves the visuals, adds a new difficulty and offers Japanese voice acting, but fails to put the 15 year old role-playing game into context. Thankfully the writing is compelling enough to warrant playing through this Dreamcast masterpiece. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Macbat 64 (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Macbat 64 by SIACTRO, available March 17 on Steam. Macbat 64 isn't an especially deep or involving platformer, but it does a good job of evoking the spirit of a bygone era. If 1998 is a time you would like to revisit, then you'll likely have a good time playing through this all-too-brief action game, but know that you're getting a short and limited game with a hero that isn't fleshed out in any way. I like the enthusiasm behind this game and wouldn't mind seeing this turned into a larger and more involving experience. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Bunker (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Bunker, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. As a full-motion video game, The Bunker excels in almost every way. It looks incredible and the acting never veers into campiness. It's a thrilling experience with a satisfying conclusion. But as an adventure game, The Bunker is a bit lacking. The puzzles are overly simplistic, the journey is too linear and the interface doesn't translate well on consoles. It's a story worth experiencing, even if the game mechanics aren't quite up to the same standard. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Stasis (Steam)
Defunct Games reviews Stasis, out this week on Steam. Stasis is a smart and intriguing point and click adventure that merges science fiction and horror into one suspenseful package. Defunct Games reviews Severed, available April 26 on PS Vita. While it can be maddening at times, Severed is also a beautifully realized adventure game filled with bizarre characters and dangerous enemies. It can be frustrating at times and the PS Vita's touchscreen isn't always precise, but Severed is a journey worth taking. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Wulverblade (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch & PC) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Wulverblade by Darkwind Media, available January 30 on PlayStation 4 and PC, and January 31 on Xbox One. Available now on Switch. Wulverblade is a delightfully gruesome throwback to an era when all of life's problems could be solved by punching bad guys in the face. Review: Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours (PS4, PS Vita & Steam)
Defunct Games reviews Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours, out now on PlayStation 4, PS Vita and Steam. As a 2D shoot-em-up, Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours is one of the year's best. It looks great, offers a staggering amount content and has a fishy gimmick I can't help but love. But even with thousands of stages and a lengthy story mode, I'm finding it hard to endorse the $60 asking price. This is not for the casual fan who just wants to shoot fish out of the sky, but rather the hardcore gamer who is willing to put dozens of hours into liberating the Darius galaxy. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Streets of Fury EX (Steam)
Defunct Games reviews Streets of Fury, out now on Stream. A throwback to a simpler time, Streets of Fury EX uses digitized characters to create the ultimate homage to old school beat-em-ups. Review: Tesla vs. Lovecraft (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Tesla vs. Lovecraft by 10tons Ltd., available now on PC, Mac and Linux. Tesla vs. Lovecraft is one of those goofy concepts you can't help but fall in love with. This horror-themed shooter covers a lot of ground you've seen before, but does it with style and personality to spare. Review: Adventures of Pip (Steam & Wii U)
Defunct Games reviews Adventures of Pip, out now on Steam and Wii U. When the pixels have been sucked out of the once-peaceful kingdom, Pip sets out on the adventure of a lifetime. Adventures of Pip has a fun conceit that sees the hero switching between three different forms, each based on the evolution of old school sprites. While this allows for some clever platforming puzzles, the game is a bit overlong and it's a shame there isn't more to the gameplay. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Count Lucanor (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Count Lucanor, available now on Steam. The Count Lucanor is a bold and surprising new adventure game from Baroque Decay. While the retro-inspired visuals are striking and the story is full of wicked twists, the journey is marred by some game-breaking technical problems and a couple questionable design decisions. Review: Iconoclasts (PlayStation 4, PS Vita & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Iconoclasts by Joakim Sandberg, available now on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, PC, Mac and Linux. Iconoclasts works as not only an exciting run 'n gun-style action game, but also a great story filled with likable characters. Joakim Sandberg has spent the better part of a decade crafting a fully-realized world with a strong emphasis on puzzle solving. There are times when the game veers too far into Metroidvania cliches and the combat isn't as tight as it should be, but Iconoclasts is one of the most unpredictable action games you're going to play this year. http://www.defunctgames.com

It doesn't have any hidden depth or greater meaning; it's just a fun arcade-style time-waster. And at $4, that's all it needs to be. Final Fight vs. Streets of Rage: 1990s Critics Choose a Winner!
Although they don't get as much play these days, the 2D beat-em-up was a staple of the 1980s and 90s. Games like Double Dragon, Golden Axe and River City Ransom helped turn an admittedly simple genre into a system seller. But when it came to 16-bit brawlers, there were only two names that mattered -- Final Fight and Streets of Rage. Today we're going to take a look at what magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly, Die Hard Game Fan, Mega Play and Computers + Video Games said at the time. And then we're going to crunch the numbers, deciding once and for which classic beat-em-up is king. http://www.defunctgames.com
