Review: Skullgirls 2nd Encore (PS Vita & PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Skullgirls 2nd Encore, available now on PS Vita and PlayStation 4. By mixing Japanese anime with American animation circa 1940, Skullgirls 2nd Encore is one of the best looking fighting games on the market. This brand new PS Vita release is bursting with memorable characters, over-the-top action and online play against console opponents. Unfortunately, this port is marred by occasionally blurry graphics. Imperfections aside, Lab Zero has developed a stylish fighting game that is good both at home and on the go. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Axiom Verge (PlayStation 4 & PS Vita) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Axiom Verge for the PlayStation 4. In a generation bursting with neo-retro action games, Axiom Verge stands out as one of the best. This could have been a simple one-note love letter to the cartridge games of yesteryear, but instead it exceeds expectations and even manages to bring a few new ideas to the mix. Axiom Verge is a stunner that is every bit as good as the games that inspired it. More reviews at: http://www.defunctgames.com Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DefunctGames

Review: Dragon's Crown Pro (PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Dragon's Crown Pro by Vanillaware, available May 15 on PlayStation 4. Even though it doesn't have much in the way of new content, Dragon's Crown Pro shines on the PlayStation 4. This is a brawler that evolves the genre in a lot of important ways, and the gorgeous visuals haven't aged a day. Fans who already own the game on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita may not see much reason to upgrade, but if you're into old school brawlers and somehow missed out on the original release, then Dragon's Crown Pro is an absolute must-play. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Defunct (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Defunct, available January 29 on Steam. Although short, Defunct is a charming new platformer with a likable hero and intriguing mechanics. The world is both fun to traverse and visually stimulating. Best of all, it's actually fun. That's more than I can say about Sonic the Hedgehog's recent outings. http://www.defunctgames.com

Electronic Gaming Monthly's Worst Reviewed Games of 1990
The year is 1990 and I'm on GamePro TV spoiling the end of Ghouls 'N Ghosts. This was the year Sofia Coppola single-handedly ruined The Godfather trilogy, America kicked off the first Gulf War and Ice Ice Baby was turning Vanilla Ice into a household name. But we're not here to stop, collaborate and listen, because today we're counting down Electronic Gaming Monthly's worst reviewed games of 1990. Let's kick it! Review: Teslagrad (PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 3)
Defunct Games reviews Teslagrad, out now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Teslagrad is a clever puzzle platformer with a cool conceit and narrative device. Players use electromagnetic power to move obstacles and beat challenging bosses. The story is told entirely through exploration and puppet shows, forcing players to form their own conclusions. The result is a delightful adventure that is brought down by imprecise controls. For more reviews: http://www.defunctgames.com

Nintendo Power's Five Worst Reviewed Games of 1993
The year is 1993. Kris Kross wants you to Jump Jump, Fran Drescher is hired as The Nanny and Nintendo hopes you'll love the Super Mario Bros. movie. Review: Severed (PS Vita) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Severed, available April 26 on PS Vita. While it can be maddening at times, Severed is also a beautifully realized adventure game filled with bizarre characters and dangerous enemies. It's also a compelling Metroidvania-style quest, filled with hidden areas and secret paths. It can be frustrating at times and the PS Vita's touchscreen isn't always precise, but Severed is a journey worth taking. http://www.defunctgames.com

Five Things You Don't Know About Nintendo Power
For many of us, Nintendo Power was the gateway drug to harder video game magazines. With its eye-catching cover designs and an emphasis on detailed strategy guides, Nintendo Power toed the line between informative news source and wildly biased propaganda machine. No matter where you come down on this long-running magazine, it's interesting to look back at some of the misconceptions people have about Nintendo Power's early days. Here are five facts you didn't know about Nintendo Power. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Horizon Chase Turbo (PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Horizon Chase Turbo by Aquiris Game Studio, available now on PlayStation 4. Coming soon to Switch and Xbox One. Horizon Chase Turbo is more than just a fun throwback game, it's also one of the best racers I've played all year. This is a surprisingly long game filled with great graphics, a killer soundtrack, dozens of cars, tons of locations and extra modes that will have you playing for weeks to come. Horizon Chase Turbo is one of the few modern racing games to get old school nostalgia right. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Aven Colony (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Aven Colony by Mothership Entertainment, available July 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Aven Colony is a game that manages to scratch that SimCity itch while still offering something new. This game is not only incredibly easy to learn and fun to play, but it's quick and painless with a controller. As somebody who went in a bit skeptical, I'm thoroughly impressed by the effortless execution and lengthy adventure. There are a few performance issues here and there, but don't let that keep you from setting up your own colony on Aven Prime. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Deadly Tower of Monsters (PlayStation 4 & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Deadly Tower of Monsters, out this week on PlayStation 4 and Steam. Although the gameplay is a bit repetitive and the camera controls are non-existent, The Deadly Tower of Monsters proves to be worth your time for the style and story alone. I laughed from beginning to end and was wowed by the late game plot twists. If you grew up loving cheesy B-rate movies, then there's a lot to like in Dick Starspeed's video game debut. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Late Shift (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Late Shift by Wales Interactive, available April 18 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. While nowhere near as good as The Bunker, I like that Wales Interactive is keeping the full-motion video genre alive with games like Late Shift. This crime thriller isn't especially original and you probably won't want to play it more than a few times, but it has an attractive price and good production values. I hope they keep making games like this, but maybe next time make the interactive movie a little more, well, interactive. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Tesla vs. Lovecraft (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Tesla vs. Lovecraft by 10tons Ltd., available now on PC, Mac and Linux. Tesla vs. Lovecraft is one of those goofy concepts you can't help but fall in love with. This horror-themed shooter covers a lot of ground you've seen before, but does it with style and personality to spare. The result is an intense dual-stick shoot 'em up that, while repetitive, is awfully hard to put down. Cosmic horror has never been this action-packed. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Coma - Recut (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Coma: Recut by Devespresso Games, available September 19 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. While a little repetitive at times, The Coma: Recut is a mostly successful survival horror game with a twisted story and a spooky setting. I like the lead character and the quest he goes on, even if he has to run from his murderous teacher a few too many times. Who knew that The Coma: Recut would be the year's best Friday the 13th game? http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Lust for Darkness (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Lust for Darkness by Movie Games, available June 12 on PC. While Lust for Darkness manages to provide a few genuinely unnerving moments, I was ultimately disappointed by the straight-forward gameplay, simple puzzles and short run time. It's the kind of game that starts out promising enough, but gradually gets less interesting the more you uncover. The result is a horror game with a few scary scenes that don't add up to much. Review: Phoning Home (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Phoning Home from Ion Lands, available now on Steam. If you're able to look beyond some baffling technical issues and are willing to save frequently, you'll find an incredible adventure with two of the best new characters of the year. The alien world they explore is full of surprises and the mystery is genuinely intriguing, especially as you learn more about the people who used to inhabit the planet. Phoning Home is only a patch or two away from being a game I truly love. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours (PS4, PS Vita & Steam)
Defunct Games reviews Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours, out now on PlayStation 4, PS Vita and Steam. As a 2D shoot-em-up, Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours is one of the year's best. It looks great, offers a staggering amount content and has a fishy gimmick I can't help but love. But even with thousands of stages and a lengthy story mode, I'm finding it hard to endorse the $60 asking price. This is not for the casual fan who just wants to shoot fish out of the sky, but rather the hardcore gamer who is willing to put dozens of hours into liberating the Darius galaxy. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Alwa's Awakening (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Alwa's Awakening by Elden Pixels, available now on Steam. While it often treads on familiar ground, I can't deny the level of quality found in Alwa's Awakening. This is a lengthy adventure full of bosses to fight and secrets to unearth. I spent nine hours fighting and dying, and I still haven't unlocked 100% of the map. This is more than just a loving homage; it's a damn good action game that completely understands why we're nostalgic for 8-bit adventures. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: X-Morph: Defense (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews X-Morph: Defense from EXOR Studios, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. X-Morph: Defense brings together the best elements from tower defense games and dual-stick shooters. And while it's occasionally frustrating and often repetitive, the shoot-em-up action is fast and satisfying. There are some good ideas here that aren't fully explored, but there's still a lot to like about this action game. Coming from the developer best known for Zombie Driver HD, I think it's safe to say that X-Morph: Defense is EXOR Studio's best game yet. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: DOGOS (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews DOGOS, available on PlayStation 4 on September 6 and Xbox One and Steam on September 7. While there's still room for improvement, it's clear that OPQAM is headed in the right direction. DOGOS is an action-packed game that not only looks a lot better than Project Root, but is also more exciting and easier to get into. The fact that it doesn't play like most traditional shoot-em-ups helps set it apart from the pack, even when it fails to capitalize on its uniqueness. It's not always original and there are still some issues I would like to see the developers iron out, but DOGOS is yet another fun shooter for modern consoles. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Flinthook (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Flinthook by Tribute Games, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Despite being incredibly difficult at times, I still had a lot of fun blasting my way through the solar system. A lot of this comes down to the grappling hook mechanics, which is a real joy to use and will take some time to master. I also love the old school visuals, run 'n gun action and all the stuff you can collect from level to level. Even when I suffered a horrible death, I still wanted to jump back in and grab more booty. That's not something I can say about a lot of roguelikes. While I wish the aiming was more precise and the levels a little more diverse, I'm all but certain you'll have a great time kicking alien butt in Flinthook. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Skylar & Plux - Adventure on Clover Island (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island by Right Nice Games, available May 19 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Although this is aimed at those of us who remember platformers from the early 2000s, I kept thinking that the real audience is probably much younger. Between the simple gameplay and light difficulty, there isn't much here that will keep veteran gamers interested for more than an hour or two. But for the younger set, I can see how this might be a good introduction to the genre. I think the graphics look nice, the levels are varied and the characters have a lot of personality. Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island would not be my pick for the best platformer of the year, but you could certainly do a lot worse. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Q.U.B.E. - Director's Cut (PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 3)
Defunct Games reviews Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut, out now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Inspired by Portal, Q.U.B.E. sees players manipulating cube-filled puzzles in order to escape the alien spaceship. This brand new director's cut offers new modes, music and a story full of voice acting. The compelling narrative is undermined by the bland location and brief run time. It may not reach the level of Portal, but Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut will please fans of first-person puzzlers. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: AER - Memories of Old (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews AER: Memories of Old by Daedalic Entertainment, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. From the moment I first laid eyes on the Land of Gods, I knew I wanted to spend as much time as possible flying through the skies and exploring the ruins. The rest of the game is fun, but can't stack up against that initial impression. The problem is that it's too short, doesn't have enough to do and is filled with puzzles that are much too easy. AER: Memories of Old is good, but doesn't fly as high as it should have. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Maldita Castilla EX (Xbox One) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Maldita Castilla EX, available now on Xbox One. Maldita Castilla EX is not for people who get frustrated easily. This is a challenging exercise in perfect platforming and dumb luck. And much like the games that inspired it, I came away satisfied and impressed with this new Xbox One release. I wish the gameplay was a little deeper and the bosses a bit more menacing, but Maldita Castilla EX is a game I would have spent a lot of money on in the arcades. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human, out January 19 on Steam. Part Shadow of the Colossus and Super Metroid, this shoot-em-up takes players deep into the future to experience what's left of Earth. With its melancholy atmosphere, retro presentation and intense boss fights, I found a lot to love in The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human. This is something special that needs to be played as soon as possible. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: The Count Lucanor (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Count Lucanor, available now on Steam. The Count Lucanor is a bold and surprising new adventure game from Baroque Decay. While the retro-inspired visuals are striking and the story is full of wicked twists, the journey is marred by some game-breaking technical problems and a couple questionable design decisions. That's disappointing, but shouldn't keep you from taking a chance on this endearing adventure game. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Iconoclasts (PlayStation 4, PS Vita & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Iconoclasts by Joakim Sandberg, available now on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, PC, Mac and Linux. Iconoclasts works as not only an exciting run 'n gun-style action game, but also a great story filled with likable characters. Joakim Sandberg has spent the better part of a decade crafting a fully-realized world with a strong emphasis on puzzle solving. There are times when the game veers too far into Metroidvania cliches and the combat isn't as tight as it should be, but Iconoclasts is one of the most unpredictable action games you're going to play this year. http://www.defunctgames.com

Top 10 Awkward Conversations in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
http://www.defunctgames.com Welcome to Great Moments in Bad Acting, your weekly history lesson about terrible voice acting. Today marks the penultimate episode for the season. We're celebrating with a personal favorite of mine -- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Review: Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, available May 17 on PlayStation 4. Although Sega hasn't added anything to this PlayStation 4 port, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered remains an exciting mix of third-person shooting and strategy role-playing. The lengthy quest can be a bit wordy at times, but that doesn't overshadow the great visuals and fun missions. Even if this isn't a genre you normally enjoy, Valkyria Chronicles may be fast-paced enough to change your mind. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Infernium (PlayStation 4, Switch & PC) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Infernium by Carlos Coronado, available now on PlayStation 4, Switch and PC. Infernium is frustrating, confusing, aggravating, baffling and occasionally unfair, but it's also one of the few games I've played this year to leave me in awe. It's not for everybody and it may take you a few tries before it's fun, but there's a world of discovery hidden away in this strange and hostile game. Infernium demands that you dig a little deeper. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Hand of Fate (PlayStation 4 & Xbox One)
Hand of Fate is a devastatingly addictive adventure game that mixes card collecting with fast-paced third-person action and board games. Review: The Bunker (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews The Bunker, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. As a full-motion video game, The Bunker excels in almost every way. It looks incredible and the acting never veers into campiness. It's a thrilling experience with a satisfying conclusion. But as an adventure game, The Bunker is a bit lacking. The puzzles are overly simplistic, the journey is too linear and the interface doesn't translate well on consoles. It's a story worth experiencing, even if the game mechanics aren't quite up to the same standard. http://www.defunctgames.com

Review: Embers of Mirrim (PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Embers of Mirrim by Creative Bytes Studios, available May 23 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Embers of Mirrim is a perfect example of a developer taking a simple concept and making the most of it. The idea of controlling two separate characters at the same time may not be completely original, but the world they've built and the puzzles spread throughout keep this adventure fresh. It can be difficult to the point of maddening at times, but is also rewarding and full of beautiful backgrounds. This is a charming and riveting debut from Creative Bytes. http://www.defunctgames.com

Defunct Games reviews Iron Crypticle from Tikipod Limited, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Although it covers a lot of familiar ground, Iron Crypticle is a fun little shooter that is even better with friends. It's occasionally repetitive and the levels aren't varied enough, but this four-player shoot-em-up offers a staggering amount of loot to collect and hours of roguelike fun. With incredible bonus features, upgraded graphics and an easier to use interface, Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition is the ultimate version of the game. While some may question full-motion video's place in history, this package makes a strong case for why Night Trap (and the genre in general) was important. Electronic Gaming Monthly's Worst Reviewed Games of 1996 | Defunct Games
The year is 1996 and fans of the just-released first installment of Game of Thrones are reasonably confident George R. R. Martin will be able to finish his series. Review: Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Don't Dry (Steam) - Defunct Games
Defunct Games reviews Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don't Dry by Crazy Bunch, available November 7 on PC and Mac. Although it's not as cutting as it could have been, Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don't Dry is an inspired new take on the hapless bachelor. This is a fun way to explore the generational differences between dating in the 1980s and modern day, and I like the colorful cast of characters they've assembled in the city of New Lost Wages. On the other hand, the game tends to throw too many items at you and the puzzles can be a bit nonsensical at times. Although occasionally overwhelming, I found a lot to like about Larry Laffer's first new adventure in more than a decade. www.defunctgames.com

Review: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (PlayStation 4 & Xbox One)
While not the next-generation Final Fantasy game fans are anxiously waiting for, Type-0 is a fun action/adventure with a lot of compelling ideas. There's enough variety in the gameplay to keep the combat fresh for dozens of hours, and the story is surprisingly emotional for a political thriller. Sadly, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is held back by its handheld roots, but don't let that keep you from discovering this oddity. http://www.defunctgames.com

Defunct Games reviews Riptide GP: Renegade, available now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Riptide GP: Renegade is a testament to how much great controls and a killer setting can add to an otherwise straight-forward racing game. Although formulaic, Vector Unit's newest game makes a splash by evoking some of my favorite arcade racers, all while offering just enough variety, upgrades and modes to keep you invested for hours to comes. It comes up a little short on content, but Riptide GP: Renegade is one of my favorite racing games of the year. http://www.defunctgames.com
