SYMPHONY OF VIOLENCE: “Episode Two” ◄John Wick Supercut►

We played through “Episode Two” like John Wick, tallied up a body count of 108 kills for Gordon Freeman, condensed every single kill into 4 minutes of carnage, and set everything to the beat of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. The finish line is almost in sight. Having gunned our way through Half-Life 2, Episode One and this, we’re now three-fourths of the way through Gordon Freeman’s saga. Combining his 108 kills in this episode with his 135 kills in Episode One and 805 in Half-Life 2, Freeman’s body count now stands at 1,048. The fourth, final chapter of this saga will be Black Mesa, at which point we’ll definitively know how much of a righteous mass murderer our favourite MIT graduate is. Again, first-time viewers may wonder why, if Episode Two comprises 7 chapters, we included footage from only 4. Again, the answer is that we skipped chapters where killing was unnecessary. “To The White Forest” can be beaten by running past every Antlion like a madman. “This Vortal Coil” is similar, except you get invincible allies like Griggs, Sheckley, the Vortigaunt and even Sentry Guns to distract and murder your enemies whilst you run past everything. If you’re slow and Antlions corner you, you can just knock ‘em aside with your Gravity Gun and keep running. From “Freeman Pontifex” onward, killing does become necessary, though now you have Alyx and Alyx’s Gun to handle most of the killing for you. We’ve included an especially hilarious clip at the start of this supercut, showing how Alyx can help you with... well, saving vast quantities of ammo, basically. That Doctor Freeman’s body count is as high as it is, even when he avoids killing whenever possible, speaks to how long he’s been fighting for human freedom. Even without Episode Three or Project Borealis, his murderous legend is assured.

2013 - Night of the Living Cupcake (1080p)

One night, a gaggle of kitchen ingredients comes to life, baking themselves into... cake? The idea for a stop-motion short on cupcakes came in fits and bursts. I toyed with the idea for months, but didn't seriously consider it till I began researching previous attempts at stop-motion food, notably by Jan Švankmajer in the 1980s. Eventually I felt informed enough to start shooting, amassing over 2,000 stills that ultimately formed the basis of this short. Visually "Night of the Living Cupcake" harkens back to Švankmajer's surrealism and photography -- the graininess, for instance, echoes the film stock used by Švankmajer in the 1980s. But whereas Švankmajer's work often suggests malevolence behind objects springing mechanically to life, here we try to convey a sense of childlike wonder. Stop-motion's defining quality to me is its ability to infuse objects on film with tactile feeling. In the end, I simply wanted to craft something that would make my friends smile on New Year's. We played through “Episode One” like John Wick, tallied up a body count of 135 kills for Gordon Freeman, condensed every single kill into 4 minutes of carnage, and set everything to the beat of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. Well, that was easy. Whereas our “Half-Life 2” compilation required 24 weeks of killing, recording and editing, this compilation of Freeman’s 135 kills in Episode One took just a month to finish. Combined with his 805 kills in Half-Life 2, this puts Freeman’s body count so far at 940. And after we finish our compilation of Freeman’s kills in Episode Two, we expect Freeman’s total body count across the Half-Life 2 saga to exceed 1,000. Meanwhile, we haven’t even accounted for Freeman’s body count from the original Half-Life yet. That will come later. One question viewers may have: If Episode One comprises 5 chapters, why does this compilation feature kills only from “Direct Intervention”, “Urban Flight” and “Exit 17”? The reason is that those are the only chapters where killing is necessary. You can survive the other chapters by running past every enemy and allowing Alyx Vance to kill everyone. Like the original Half-Life, Half-Life 2 is a survival game that rewards avoidance of combat. And frankly, after spending 24 weeks on our previous compilation, we were tired of recording unnecessary footage. So we played through the other chapters to confirm they can be completed without killing, saving hard disk space by not recording them. If people really want to see what playing without killing is like, wait for our Episode Two compilation, where we demonstrate how allowing Alyx to kill everyone for you is practically required, to save ammo. We’re still unsure about continuing these John Wick compilations beyond Half-Life and Splinter Cell. Eventually we’d like to count up kills from more modern franchises like Wolfenstein, but first we’ll see if anyone watches these videos. And if they don’t... well, at least we discovered Gordon Freeman’s body count in the process!

VISIBILITY ► given contemporary anxieties over China’s global rise, the game engages with similar themes, albeit with some measure of respectfulness. rather than being faceless foreigners, Chinese people are shown to be human beings, evident when dissidents and refugees interact with you. the game’s turning point comes when Irish, a black Marine, brings hundreds of refugees aboard a U.S. ship, despite racist grumbling from crew. yet the Chinese are not just helpless victims. your team includes Hannah, a Harvard-educated agent, albeit with a suspicious background. women veterans are respectfully represented too. Major Greenland is shown as cynical, yet caring toward her troops and true to her word. the game is unusual in not only granting visibility to women and foreigners, but depicting them as vital to the game’s narrative as well. AGENCY ► the game is unsentimental in depicting war as destructive rather than glorious, but the characters try their best to make a difference anyway. Irish, your squad’s moral centre, never puts following orders above doing good. his efforts save the lives of countless Chinese refugees. Hannah also pursues her own agenda in an effort to stop China’s civil war, though her methods fuel the suspicions of a distrustful Irish. nonetheless, both characters come to earn each other’s respect. by the campaign’s end, both are willing to give up one’s life to save the other. Greenland, the game’s highest-ranking female, has a brief but vital role in helping the heroes, providing them with the means to escape China. though the game might be a military shooter, the campaign is mostly free of the sort of jingoism and macho posturing endemic to the genre. PROGRESS ► though the game was above average in the handling of its characters, such efforts were overshadowed by the game’s technical failings. despite public beta testing, the game suffered from absurd bugs upon release, which broke the gameplay and even led to class-action lawsuits. nonetheless, the developers continue to fix and update the game, even to this day, which has contributed to its enduring popularity online. in 2015, the franchise’s publisher released “Battlefield: Hardline”, a spinoff praised for its improved plot and wildly diverse characters. “Star Wars Battlefront” is the franchise’s most recent spinoff, though this title was critically slammed for lacking any coherent story. gamers can only hope the developers learn their lesson, and pay attention to the characters and plot of future “Battlefield” instalments. ... (TLDR: We counted every kill in F.E.A.R., the greatest first-person shooter in history. We counted 583 dead enemies. Combined with the 795 in Project Origin and 657 in F.E.A.R. 3, approximately 2,035 victims die over the course of the F.E.A.R. trilogy.) We’ve finished recording every kill in the F.E.A.R. trilogy, a franchise squandered through mediocre sequels, yet so beloved by gamers that retrospectives on YouTube can’t seem to stop popping up. Now, after months of killing and recording, we can finally answer question, “Say, I wonder how many people die over the course of a franchise?” Hint: In F.E.A.R., it’s 583. Combined with the body count of the sequels, that’s 2,035 dead. Thanatos would have been proud. We should note that you don’t play the same protagonist in all three games. In the first and third game, you play the Point Man, whereas in the second you play Sergeant Beckett. So the Point Man frags 1,240 enemies over the course of his excellent adventure, whilst Sergeant Beckett murders 795. We should probably clarify how we define “enemies killed”, since some enemies are incorporeal ghosts, whilst others are mechanical and technically not alive in the first place. For simplicity’s sake, we counted only enemies that are corporeal or mobile. That includes robots and vehicles, but excludes turrets and ghosts. We think it’s a fair distinction, since destroying turrets and ghosts doesn’t look very exciting, even in bullet time. Also note that we didn’t count any kills from expansions or DLC either. Monolith explicitly stated that Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate were non-canon to Project Origin, though oddly nothing in Project Origin really contradicted the expansions. And the Reborn DLC for the second game was also ignored and contradicted by the third game, where Paxton Fettel’s partnership with Foxtrot 813 is never mentioned. We think the expansions and DLC are superior to the canonical sequels anyway, but nobody cares what we think. So where do we go from here? Later this year, we want to count all of Gordon Freeman’s kills in the Half-Life franchise. We were actually halfway through the franchise, but decided to step back and rethink after the response to the initial videos ranged from mildly disinterested to explicitly negative. The biggest complaint is that the format – i.e. the same one we used for these F.E.A.R. videos – is boring. So we’ll likely redo the videos in a more stylised way, a la our “Symphony of Violence” video for Superhot. Recreating months of work is time-consuming, but we want to make something that everyone will enjoy. Hopefully we’ll finish by 16 November, the anniversary of Half-Life 2...

Can you choose an approach other than killing everyone? How much agency do other characters have over the narrative? Do they have an active role, or are they helpless victims needing rescue? These concepts are known as player agency and character agency. So let’s examine which characters have agency in “Half-Life 2”. ... “Half-Life 2” is a milestone in feminist gaming. But despite its advances, the game is primarily still a linear sci-fi shooter. Sometimes, you progress in the game by solving puzzles. Here, you can see us using physics to move a ramp into position. Mostly though, you progress in the game by shooting things. Like we said, it’s a linear sci-fi shooter. You don’t make moral choices like you would in more modern sci-fi games. Such games include the “BioShock” and “Mass Effect” franchises. Agency in “Half-Life 2” is arguably more primitive than in modern franchises. ... However, keep in mind the game came out back in 2004. This was long before the era of games like “BioShock” or “Mass Effect”. When “Half-Life 2” was released, it was most renowned for its humanity. Like “Half-Life”, “Half-Life 2” proved shooters didn’t have to focus on killing. Rather, large segments could simply focus on characterisation. This was a time when mindless shooters like “Quake” dominated the market. The “Half-Life” games represent a break from tradition. The original was known for its believable world. However, the depiction of this world was limited by the game’s technology. “Half-Life 2” pushed those limits. The result was a videogame epic where interacting with others felt real. ... What about the agency of other characters in the game? Sure, Doctor Freeman is the central hero. But other characters also have a role in shaping the plot and saving Earth. Consider Doctor Mossman, for instance. She’s one of the game’s more visible women characters, besides Alyx. However, Mossman’s not in the game to look pretty or need rescuing. Her motives are surprisingly complex, especially for a woman character. In fact, Mossman is vital to the course of the narrative. Alyx’s rapport with her father is worth noting. The game depicts how their relationship motivates each other to keep fighting. Doctor Vance himself is a unique presence. Seeing a disabled, elderly, and educated man of colour in a videogame is a rarity. That’s why the fact he spends half the game in captivity is a bit disappointing. ... Still, even minor characters in “Half-Life 2” have a hand in saving humanity. This includes the ragtag rebels who rise up to assist you. Clearly, you’re not there to rescue the helpless locals. ... Fifteen years ago, on 13 May 2013, Valve announced the existence of Half-Life 2. Fifteen years later, we decided to count how many enemies Gordon Freeman destroys over the course of history’s most beloved first-person shooter. Now, after months of fragging and recording, we finally know Doctor Freeman’s body count. Hint: The answer is 797. And we documented all those kills in glorious, Matrix-like slow motion. For those who want a more granular analysis, 658 of those dead are Combine units, versus 139 being Xen creatures. Headcrabs might be annoying and deserving of death, but the Combine’s inter-dimensional empire bore the biggest brunt of Freeman’s wrath. One caveat is that we played Half-Life 2 as a survival game, not a COD-like first-person shooter. Some sections in the game, like the mines under Ravenholm, are filled with enemies that respawn forever or are too slow to warrant killing. In such instances, we simply ran past enemies instead of fighting them. When possible, we avoided combat to avoid wasting ammo – and also to avoid filling our hard drives with unnecessary footage. Hard drive space may be cheap, but it’s not free, and we don’t monetise our channel to cover the overhead for these videos. We make them purely for love in gaming. Of the 10 out of 14 chapters played (because not all chapters involve combat), by far the bloodiest ones were “Anticitizen One” and “Follow Freeman”, with body counts of 155 and 101 respectively... and that’s whilst we were trying to avoid combat by running past slow zombies and distracted soldiers. The most idyllic (or boring) chapters were “Water Hazard” and “Highway 17”, where we killed only 49 and 51 enemies respectively. Not coincidentally, those are the chapters most filled with obligatory vehicle sections, where you spend longer on being stuck on props than shooting things. Without question, our two favourite chapters were “We don’t go to Ravenholm” and “Dark Energy”, with the hilarity of the gravity gun and ragdoll physics. Even fifteen years after release, Half-Life 2 and its physics-driven gameplay have yet to be bested by modern AAA franchises like Battlefield or Call of Duty. We did, however, want to showcase Half-Life 2 with the best possible graphics. Whilst Half-Life 2: Update exists, at only 3 gigabytes, the graphical improvements are too slight to justify downloading. Instead, we turned to Cinematic Mod: Awakening – Origins, by far the cleanest fork of Cinematic Mod we’ve ever seen. Whilst Cinematic Mod has a reputation for silly models, Origins is vanilla Half-Life 2 with assets upscaled to stunning 4K, retaining the style of the original. The results are astounding, as seen in our videos. Sadly, Origins is no longer available for download due to behind-the-scenes drama. But we saved a copy for ourselves, and if people ask, we’ll gladly upload it to Google Drive for posterity. Eventually we aim to summate Freeman’s kills in all these games, so we can determine his lifetime body count. We’re still counting the number of enemies felled by Freeman in Black Mesa, Episode One, and Episode Two. But based on footage we’ve analysed and videos edited, we estimate Gordon Freeman has murdered 1,435 enemies over the course of the Half-Life saga. So far we’ve counted around 400 kills in Black Mesa, 100 in Episode One, and 200 in Episode Two. Of course, we still need to upload videos proving our results. We look forward to doing just that in the coming months.

VISIBILITY ► whilst the first “Half-Life” was renowned for its realism, it was oddly devoid of women characters, though it did have one token black dude. surprisingly, the sequel raises the bar in this regard. Freeman’s closest ally is Alyx, an educated multiracial woman with a talent for tech. Dr. Vance is her dad, the one black character from the first game, now depicted as a disabled Harvard grad leading the Resistance’s research. also aiding the Resistance is Dr. Mossman, a woman scientist who manages to be an important character (despite not having a boyfriend). the human citizens of City 17 are an equally varied lot. they hail from a range of backgrounds, as should be expected of a modern populace. though the game features both minority and female characters, it portrays them as essential contributors, not helpless victims to be rescued. AGENCY ► Dr. Freeman may be the central hero, but he is no lone-wolf saviour. the supporting cast also have roles in shaping the plot and saving Earth. Dr. Mossman is one of the game’s more visible female characters. complex in her motives, she plays both sides in a gamble for Earth’s survival. Freeman’s ally Alyx also defies stereotypes of girls as helpless damsels. her first appearance involves saving the hero from police in pursuit. Alyx’s rapport with her dad is noteworthy as well. the game depicts how their relationship motivates her to keep fighting for the Resistance. Alyx’s dad is a gaming rarity, being an elderly, educated and disabled man of colour. that he spends half the game in captivity is disappointing. nonetheless, most minor characters have an active role in saving their world, even the ragtag rebels who rise up in revolt during the game. PROGRESS ► though praised for its immersive characters and storytelling, the game failed to immediately persuade rival studios to adopt a similar approach. the later games of the era favoured macho, cinematic approaches where muscly, clichéd supermen save the world, with women oddly absent. in recent years though, more studios have begun recognising the importance of having characters who look like the gamers buying games. the developers of “Half-Life 2” continue to (slowly) develop games under this philosophy, as evidenced by characters in titles like “Left 4 Dead”. even after more than a decade, “Half-Life 2” remains relevant, as fans persist in creating new modifications to update and improve the game. the pivotal question now is whether future videogames will try to surpass the high bar set by “Half-Life 2” and its forward-looking developers. In our previous video, we gave an overview of “Mass Effect 3”. In this video, we’ll look at diversity in the game. How visible are women, minorities, and other marginalised people? Does the game feature characters from diverse backgrounds? Or do formulaic white males dominate the narrative, like in many games? The “Mass Effect” trilogy was developed by BioWare. BioWare’s franchises have always been known for inclusiveness. Their “Old Republic” games, dating back to 2003, even feature LGBT characters. So technically, diversity in “Mass Effect 3” is nothing new. ... However, the industry as a whole still struggles with inclusiveness in games. This is why “Mass Effect” is important. Granted, developers nowadays are working to develop more diverse franchises. Examples include “Dishonored” and “Tomb Raider”. But the “Mass Effect” franchise has always established a high bar for inclusiveness. So, how do you critique inclusiveness in a videogame? You start with its main character. You play Commander Shepard, from the previous “Mass Effect” games. Your job is to save the galaxy from alien robots. As in all “Mass Effect” games, you customise your character at the start of the game. ... Now, you can create a Shepard who’s a bog-standard white, hetero male. But here, you can see our Commander is female. In “Mass Effect”, your character’s race, gender, and even sexuality are customisable. However, these elements don’t impact your character’s personality. Creating a female character doesn’t cause you to act like an airhead. Creating a black character doesn’t cause you to sound like a gangbanger or criminal. Plenty of games rely on female and minority stereotypes. But “Mass Effect 3” strives for believability and complexity. Creating your own hero, without the burden of clichés, is a fresh breath of air. ... What about the cast of characters that works with Shepard? Over on the human side, “Mass Effect 3” impresses. The human cast looks like a cross-section of today’s population. Today’s world is full of women, minorities, and sometimes even gay people. Well, the game’s cast is full of them too. Here, you can see the crew of our ship includes women and people of colour. Your commanding officer back on Earth is a black veteran. In this way, “Mass Effect 3” sets a high bar for human diversity in videogames. ... Diversity is more problematic with regards to the alien cast. Sure, the game features prominent alien characters that are female. But most of them hew pretty closely to the “green-skinned space babe” trope. Or in this case, the babes are painted blue. As you can see here, alien females typically resemble sexy women in exotic paint. They do occupy positions of power, as depicted in this Council meeting. But BioWare doesn’t force alien males to resemble attractive human men. It’s a surprising double standard, coming from BioWare. ... To be fair, the third instalment does make efforts to mitigate this issue. Depicted here is Eve, an alien Krogan female. She looks every bit as alien as her male colleague, Wrex. The developers don’t force Eve to conform to clichéd standards for female beauty. Female characters don’t act like stereotypical damsels in distress either. However, that’s an issue we’ll address in our next video. Ultimately, having diverse characters alone is little more than tokenism. For diversity to be meaningful, those characters must be empowered with agency. Our next video will explore whether “Mass Effect” implements agency effectively. In the meantime, thanks for watching. ... The existence of Black Mesa was revealed in late 2004, followed by an official trailer in 2008, and then 4 years of... nothing. After picking up two “Vaporware of the Year” awards in 2009 and 2010, the team finally proved in 2012 they were still alive, posting 8 new screenshots on 11 June. Now, exactly 6 years since that shocking day, we’ve finished counting every kill in Black Mesa, part of our larger quest to determine Gordon Freeman’s body count. Excluding the boss fights in Xen, which as of this morning remain unfinished (and should stay that way), we’ve found that Freeman shoots, explodes or crowbars 400 enemies over the course of Black Mesa. Combined with his other 797 kills in Half-Life 2, this brings his aggregate body count to 1,197, not including Episode One or Episode Two. Those will come later. Of course, this will doubtlessly raise questions from diehard fans who might wonder why we didn’t play Half-Life or Half-Life: Source instead, or why we skipped certain chapters or sections. The answer to the first question is simple: If we’re spending 10 straight weeks on mastering/recording 10 chapters of the original Half-Life saga, we want to capture footage at maximum fidelity, in terms of graphics and physics. Black Mesa is prettier and blessed with more epic ragdolls than Half-Life, and we’re shallow enough to care. After all, it makes a difference when we launch grenades into squads of enemies. Another question is why we recorded only 10 out of 14 chapters. Again, the reason is simple: If we’re not required to fight something, we don’t. In fact, one can easily beat the first 3 chapters of Black Mesa without firing a shot or swinging a crowbar. This is an evolution of our approach to Half-Life 2, which we previously played. With Half-Life 2, we also skipped combat whenever possible, but we rarely had space in each 2-minute episode to show how. Black Mesa has fewer kills per chapter, so we have space to show the amusing ways in which we dash past enemies before they can react to us. The finale of “Power Up” is one example – we replayed it dozens of times before finally achieving an almost-perfect, almost-no-damage run toward the exit. For those wanting a breakdown of Freeman’s body count in Black Mesa, he massacres 189 humans and 211 aliens over the course of the game, making Freeman a nearly equal-opportunity mass murderer. This is in stark contrast to Half-Life 2, where Freeman kills 797 enemies but only 139 are Xen creatures, whilst the other 658 are Combine unit. For all its emphasis on puzzles and physics, Half-Life 2 is much more of a conventional shooter where you fight primarily bad guys with guns, whereas Black Mesa is more of a survival game where your biggest concern is how to survive or avoid creepy aliens. Excluding chapters where one can avoid combat entirely, the most peaceful chapter in Black Mesa is “Apprehension”, where only 10 enemies force you to kill them – you can run past every other enemy in the chapter, even the feared Black Ops. Meanwhile, the most violent chapter is indisputably “Surface Tension”, where we were forced to murder 123 enemies over the course of longest chapter in the entire game. We were so sick of replaying it that we didn’t even bother to kill the Gargantua at the end. Normally you need to order an airstrike to kill it and proceed to the exit, but you can see in that episode we simply raced to the exit before the Gargantua could reach us and kill us. Sometimes pacifism is more efficient. After 22 consecutive weeks of Half-Life 2 and Black Mesa, we need to take a break now and recuperate before moving onto the final instalments of Freeman’s life, i.e. Episode One and Episode Two. We realise that, despite the popularity of kill count videos for famous films, not many seem interested in knowing the body count for gaming’s greatest protagonist. That’s okay, though. We make these videos for fun, not profit. Hopefully someone someday will see these videos and enjoy them. “I’m not saying goodbye, Dad...”

... Ever since the reveal of John Wick’s “Symphony of Violence” trailer in January 2017, we’ve wondered how different videogames would look if given the same treatment. However, after a whole year of no one on YouTube uploading anything remotely similar, we resolved to develop our own remake using Superhot, which everyone knows is basically John Wick: The Videogame. To be fair, we haven’t seen many fan videos in the style of “Symphony of Violence”, period – and the ones that do exist tend to be shoddy, made with seemingly little care or effort. Heck, the only decent one we’ve seen is the Deadpool remake, and that was back in February. So we’re hardly leaping on a bandwagon here, though we wish we were. But of course, it turned out to be a lot more work than we expected, for two reasons... #1: Music “Symphony of Violence” is meaningless without its distinctive music, the 1812 Overture made famous to Americans by V for Vendetta. To avoid being flagged and penalised by YouTube’s Copyright ID, we spent weeks on synthesising a remix of our own 1812 Overture for our video. The remix was focused on creating a consistent beat that we could use for timing our video. Most of the live, orchestral recordings we’ve heard of the 1812 Overture have parts that randomly slow down or speed up, throwing off the beat and making life difficult for video editors. We created our own version for that reason, and timed our video to our version. However, when we uploaded our video to YouTube, Copyright ID somehow flagged it for infringing on... the intellectual property of Warner Bros., despite our music being original. Since nobody we know has ever won a YouTube dispute with Warner Bros., we decided to avoid wasting time and change our music instead. To eliminate the possibility of being flagged by Content ID yet again, we decided to use a version of the 1812 Overture from YouTube’s own audio library, with some edits. Nonetheless, using someone else’s orchestral version – with parts that randomly slow down and speed up – meant we needed to retime our entire video, a painstaking and time-consuming process. In the meantime, we also needed... #2: Footage We used dummy footage for the initial drafts of our video – basically flashing colours to estimate where the cuts in our video would need to be. This was a lot more work than it sounds like. Since we ultimately used live, orchestral music where the beats in the music were inconsistent, we often debated amongst ourselves where cuts in the video needed to be. Even in the final hours of editing before upload, we were still trying to lock down our timings. But in the meantime, we needed game footage with which to replace our dummy footage. Our first instinct was to simply record footage of all 26 levels in the game – after all, that’s exactly what we did when we made a Superhot video called “EVERY SINGLE KILL IN: Superhot”, back in February. However, we knew from that experience that not all gaming footage is interesting, and for our new video to be impactful, we needed to be discriminating in what footage we recorded. Nor could we reuse footage from our old video either. We wanted our new video to boast a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, and our old footage was 16:9. So we needed to start from scratch. In fact, we started from scratch twice. Despite playing on an A10-7850K CPU and GTX 970 GPU, our first recorded playthrough of Superhot suffered from major stutter, no matter our graphics settings or resolution. After being unable to Google a solution, we decided we couldn’t do anything about it and proceeded to edit our footage – until one day a friend mistakenly enabled “Lock Physics” in the settings, and our framerates completely stabilised. The game still had stutter, but now the game slowed itself down whenever the framerate slowed down, smoothing out the gameplay and making stutter less obvious. Of course, it meant we needed to re-record and edit our playthrough of the game again, to ensure our footage looked as good as it could. It’s one of many reasons this 2-minute video took 3 months! Other aspects of production – from colour grading to aspect ratio – were designed to impart a cinematic quality to our project. Ultimately, in a world where the visual bar never stops rising, we put the same care into every video. We hope everyone can see that care reflected in the final result!

In our previous video, we looked at diversity in “Mass Effect 3”. In this video, we’ll look at agency. Agency comes in two forms, namely player and character agency. Player agency is your ability to make ethical choices. Such choices influence the game’s narrative, or your character’s evolution. Character agency is the activeness of other characters in the narrative. Rather than being victims or subordinates, such characters act for themselves. They’re not simply plot devices for motivating the hero. Now, diversity is usually a more popular topic than agency. But arguably, agency matters more. Having diverse characters without agency promotes little more than tokenism. ... Player agency can take different forms, depending on a game’s genre. “Mass Effect 3” does have shooter elements, but it’s primarily a role-playing game. Throughout the game, you’re forced into making countless ethical choices. Your decisions have the potential to shape the fate of the galaxy. “Mass Effect 3” is about more than solving problems through excessive firepower. Your ability as a peacemaker could save or doom everyone around you. ... Freedom of choice forms the backbone of “Mass Effect 3”. Sure, you’ll encounter plenty of cases where diplomacy’s not an option. In such situations, you’ll need guns. But “Mass Effect” empowers you to be more than a gun-toting killer. The game allows you to find solutions that don’t require violence. Here, an alien politician is offering her military to help us with fighting alien robots. In return, she wants us to assassinate her top scientist. Said scientist is working to save a rival species from an extinction-level disease. Well, we chose to ignore the politician and protect her scientist. As a player, you have agency over how violent or peaceful your decisions are. ... What about the agency of other characters you work with? Do they contribute equally to the plot? Or are they just passive bystanders who need you to rescue them? The game is about Commander Shepard saving the galaxy. But “Mass Effect” makes clear that Shepard can’t do it without her allies. Most of them are women and minorities. They’re not side-lined into being subordinates or damsels either. Arguably, they have as active a role in saving the galaxy as you do. ... Your crewmate Liara is an example of this. Liara is a scientist whose research holds the key to stopping the Reapers. You’re deployed to Mars to rescue her from Cerberus, a human militant group. However, Liara is no damsel in distress. She’s depicted as more than capable of handling herself. Granted, her role in the narrative is to help you with saving the galaxy. But Liara is a fleshed-out character with goals, aspirations, and grudges. In other words, she’s more than a plot device for advancing the narrative. ... Another example is Commander Williams. In the game, she becomes the second human in history to become a Spectre agent. You were the first. Obviously, recruiting Williams to your crew would make your job easier. But Williams doesn’t simply roll over and do as you say, just because you ask. You must earn her trust over the course of the game, for her to join you. Ultimately, characters around you exert as much agency over the narrative as you do. You’re the hero, but your allies are the reason you succeed. We played through “Black Mesa” like John Wick, tallied up a body count of 400 kills for Gordon Freeman, condensed every single kill into 10 minutes of carnage, and set everything to the beat of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. Holy cats, we finally did it. After months of killing, recording and editing, we’ve catalogued every kill Freeman ever committed in his lifetime. We counted 400 in Black Mesa, a fan project so good that it’s basically superseded the official, original Half-Life in the community’s collective consciousness. Combined with Doctor Freeman’s 805 kills in Half-Life 2, 135 in Episode One, and 108 in Episode Two, Freeman’s body count now stands at 1,448. Yep, Freeman’s body count is 7 times higher than John Wick’s kill count in his first two films. Freeman’s body count could have been even higher in Black Mesa, but many battles in Black Mesa are skip-able if you just run past them – so we did exactly that for many chapters, especially “Surface Tension” where the body count reaches into the hundreds, even if you avoid combat whenever possible. Basically we played Freeman like a survivalist, saving ammo and avoiding fights when expedient. After all, Freeman isn’t an action hero. He’s an MIT graduate trying to escape the apocalypse with his life. The build of Black Mesa we played was the December update, which obviously doesn’t include Xen. But even if Crowbar Collective releases Xen in the future, we likely won’t update this supercut with the Xen chapters. Xen in the original Half-Life featured barely any enemies, aside from some bosses, so an updated supercut would barely change Freeman’s body count anyway. With a kill count of 400 in Black Mesa and 1,448 across the Half-Life saga, Freeman’s deadly legacy is assured – give or take a few Gonarchs!
